I've just heard on the news that the Chief Medical Officer wants us all to think of our increased cancer risk every time we pour ourselves a glass of wine.
Cheers, everyone!
Bottoms up!grin

Just come out of "orspital" and was asked loads of questions about my lifestyle. One if them was how much I drank. Usually a glass of red a night with perhaps a couple of no alchol days a week. Consultant indicated that there was no problem with that at all. Mind you was a heart man perhaps a can we man would have said different.

If we obeyed every diet edict that came down to us from impeccable authority, backed by years of scientific research - we would all starve to death.

And anyway, for how long will this be the recommended advice? After years of being told to cut the amount of fat we consume, the research is now being reassessed and it is thought, by an increasing number of people, who claim to know, that cutting fat out of our diet may be bad for us. Now sugar and alcohol are the accursed food substances, but for how long?

I will stick to the mantra I often quote.'Eat well, not too much, most of it plants' - and that applies to the beverages I consume, including alcoho - think of all those grapes.

ja don't you think reducing someone's enjoyment of wine would mean they might start drinking less of it?

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 02-Feb-16 22:09:22

And I've just read your OP again. It's diabolical.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 02-Feb-16 22:18:27

Flippers for ya, jings.

NanaandGrampy Tue 02-Feb-16 22:23:12

Jalima I was told by my diabetic nurse to use rapeseed instead of olive oil but then when I saw the GP he said that when used in cooking it turns from a "good" oil to a "bad " one and to use olive oil instead.

In Trust me I'm a doctor last week they also found that Olive oil - preferably uncooked produces less "bad" fats than rapeseed or vegetable oil and they too recommended olive oil ( 20mls a day " I seem to remember.

Thats this weeks smile

I've been using rapeseed oil for years. Nothing better for roast potatoes.

I wish they'd make up their bloody minds. angry

On a serious note, is there an implication that if, like me, someone enjoys a glass of good wine with their meal, and then like me gets cancer.....it is their own fault? Is cancer then a punishment? ?

PS didn't realise we could use Apple emojis on this board!

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 02-Feb-16 22:49:54

Of course it's not a punishment. It might be a consequence though. Who knows? Best follow the advice to a reasonable extent.

thatbags Wed 03-Feb-16 07:18:42

I'm all for following reasonable advice.

whitewave Wed 03-Feb-16 08:03:45

Are you teatotal jings?

grannylyn65 Wed 03-Feb-16 08:07:49

Cart horse!

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 03-Feb-16 09:45:03

I'm not teetotal whitewave. i sometimes have a glass of Pino when we go to the pub for lunch. Less and less these days though, due to tummy probs. Gone over to mineral water. Quite nice with ice and lemon. We always have a bottle of something with the family at Xmas/Easter and birthdays.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 03-Feb-16 09:45:20

I am not a cart horse.

Judthepud2 Wed 03-Feb-16 10:05:49

Jing in my case the cancer was hormone related. Probably genetic as my great aunt died of it and my aunt had it twice.

Being told it was because of daring to touch the demon drink is not helpful! ?

Gaggi3 Wed 03-Feb-16 10:15:28

The problem with the advice from supposed experts is that it seems to change constantly and what's o.k. one week isn't the next. Also, lifestyle is only one factor in determining our fate. Heredity and good old luck play their part too.

as Marie Lloyd used to sing, 'A little a' what yer fancy does yer good.'

trisher Wed 03-Feb-16 10:43:36

I think the CMO needs to count to 100 and think very hard before she makes announcements. Who exactly is this supposed to help? The heaps of ordinary people who enjoy a glass occasionally, the heavy drinker who has addiction problems, someone already fighting cancer? It actually makes things worse. If what you say isn't helpful and doesn't make things better best keep your mouth shut.

"In 2014, there were 8,697 alcohol-related deaths registered in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) – a rate of 14.3 out of every 100,000 people. In 1994, there were 9.1 deaths per 100,000 people."
That is from the Guardian's report on Dame Sally's pronouncement.
1.43 per 10,000 does not seem a very high figure to me and presumably includes alcohol-related diseases other than cancer.

I think society faces other problems related to excessive alcohol consumption such as domestic violence and disorder on the streets which impact far more than a small increase in alcohol-related deaths.

The trouble with Dame Sally's pronouncement is that many people will dismiss it it as rubbish, and her other advice becomes less credible.

One bottle of wine a week? In your dreams. but the grown up way of looking at is everything in moderation, and that includes butter, olive oil and that long list of things that are supposed to be bad for us. Again it surprises me that the human race has lasted as long as it has given out forerunners eating habits.

I recently had a hip replacement and the list of instructions from the surgeon was one glass of red wine per day to help the blood. Well it is France!!!
