Is nagging good for us?

I've just heard on the news that the Chief Medical Officer wants us all to think of our increased cancer risk every time we pour ourselves a glass of wine.
Cheers, everyone!
Bottoms up!grin

Jing in my case the cancer was hormone related. Probably genetic as my great aunt died of it and my aunt had it twice.

Being told it was because of daring to touch the demon drink is not helpful! ?

I am not a cart horse.

I'm not teetotal whitewave. i sometimes have a glass of Pino when we go to the pub for lunch. Less and less these days though, due to tummy probs. Gone over to mineral water. Quite nice with ice and lemon. We always have a bottle of something with the family at Xmas/Easter and birthdays.

I'm all for following reasonable advice.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 02-Feb-16 22:49:54

Of course it's not a punishment. It might be a consequence though. Who knows? Best follow the advice to a reasonable extent.

Judthepud2 Tue 02-Feb-16 22:45:34

On a serious note, is there an implication that if, like me, someone enjoys a glass of good wine with their meal, and then like me gets cancer.....it is their own fault? Is cancer then a punishment? ?

PS didn't realise we could use Apple emojis on this board!

I've been using rapeseed oil for years. Nothing better for roast potatoes.

I wish they'd make up their bloody minds. angry

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 02-Feb-16 22:24:33

?

NanaandGrampy Tue 02-Feb-16 22:23:12

Jalima I was told by my diabetic nurse to use rapeseed instead of olive oil but then when I saw the GP he said that when used in cooking it turns from a "good" oil to a "bad " one and to use olive oil instead.

In Trust me I'm a doctor last week they also found that Olive oil - preferably uncooked produces less "bad" fats than rapeseed or vegetable oil and they too recommended olive oil ( 20mls a day " I seem to remember.

Thats this weeks smile

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 02-Feb-16 22:18:27

What the flip does that mean?

janeainsworth Tue 02-Feb-16 22:11:51

?

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 02-Feb-16 22:09:22

And I've just read your OP again. It's diabolical.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 02-Feb-16 22:07:26

ja don't you think reducing someone's enjoyment of wine would mean they might start drinking less of it?

M0nica Tue 02-Feb-16 21:55:58

If we obeyed every diet edict that came down to us from impeccable authority, backed by years of scientific research - we would all starve to death.

And anyway, for how long will this be the recommended advice? After years of being told to cut the amount of fat we consume, the research is now being reassessed and it is thought, by an increasing number of people, who claim to know, that cutting fat out of our diet may be bad for us. Now sugar and alcohol are the accursed food substances, but for how long?

I will stick to the mantra I often quote.'Eat well, not too much, most of it plants' - and that applies to the beverages I consume, including alcoho - think of all those grapes.

A cancer man - bloody phone

whitewave Tue 02-Feb-16 21:52:46

Just come out of "orspital" and was asked loads of questions about my lifestyle. One if them was how much I drank. Usually a glass of red a night with perhaps a couple of no alchol days a week. Consultant indicated that there was no problem with that at all. Mind you was a heart man perhaps a can we man would have said different.

Life is terminal ..in the end ..I will just enjoy the bit in the middle, wine

HQ should get her on Gransnet so we can question her. I don't believe she's as silly as that silly instruction suggests. Why not just tell us to think about our mortality like a good old bible basher? It'd do about the same amount of good.

Do you suppose she's paid piece work and hasn't made any health pronouncements lately so just had to say something?

Yes, I am being silly. What the hell else is one supposed to do in the face of such silliness?

janeainsworth Tue 02-Feb-16 20:49:36

merlotgrin

jingl it wasn't meant to be funny.
It was a serious comment, disguised with humour, on the irresponsibility of the Chief Medical Officer.
Because I do think it is irresponsible for someone in her position to try to influence people's behaviour by making scaremongering pronouncements that have very little scientific basis.
She hasn't told people not to drink wine. She's told them to think about their cancer risk every time they drink.
That might reduce their enjoyment of their wine, but how will it actually reduce their risk?

Alea Tue 02-Feb-16 20:40:56

We are not children
We are women (and some men, oops) with a wealth of professional experience - legal, educational, medical, financial , political, as well as "university of life" commonsensical. Many of us have been, maybe still are, in influential positions, both in this country and abroad , perhaps in medicine, law, social work, finance, business, local or national government etc etc.
I think we are "old enough and ugly enough"( as my late FIL used to say)
to make up our own minds. We have reached the years of discretion and the age of consent. So, we are not being "childish" or "irresponsible" and we don't need to be nagged by the nanny state or indeed anybody else.

merlotgran Tue 02-Feb-16 20:31:15

I thought the thread title was suggesting that it's good for us to nag.

I definitely feel better after I've nagged DH to get of his a**e and pour me a wine
