A few weeks ago I had a blood test prior to my annual medication review. For the first time ever a blood glucose test was included. For the past 25yrs. I have taken 1 diuretic, 1 statin and 2 other tablets to control my high blood pressure.
At the review everything was fine except my blood sugar was up. So I had another blood test which confirmed the results of the first. I was diabetic.
This came as a complete shock.
Researching everything to do with diabetes, I came across several articles linking diuretics, especially thiazides, which I have taken for 25yrs, to diabetes.
Apparently I should have been monitored for diabetes all along.

So what do I do now?

I'm sorry you have had this news but the cause may well be nothing to do with the diuretics. What does your doctor say about it? I hope you GPS will have a management plan in mind for you. I would be sticking closely to that and signing myself up with Diabetes UK which give excellent support, education and advice.

BBbevan my OH, like many others, has completely reversed Type 2 by a low-carb diet.
Here is a link from Diabetes UK about the work of the GP Dr David Unwin.

If you are interested, come and join us on the low-carb thread.
The Diabetes UK forums are worth a look too.
Obviously you need to be guided by your GP.

Thanks Mamie, I have already started the low carb diet. I have both Michael Mosley's book and the 5:2 recipe book, so I have enough to be going on with.I will join you on the low- card thread. I need ideas for Easter as we are going to stay with my daughter who is an excellent cook.
