Worried about DGS aged 4

They were staying with us for 5 days during which time he was unwell. He has gone home now - not far away - and he is still the same. He has no temperature, no diarrhoea, no rash, no general viral malaise - but he is vomiting every day. This started a couple of days before he came to us, so it has been over a week now. He appears perfectly well and is running about and hungry, then he suddenly starts to groan and cry and is sick. Then he falls asleep and continues to be unwell until the next morning when he wakes up as jolly as can be. You think he is better but the come that afternoon the whole cycle starts again.

He was in hospital overnight on Saturday as he was in such distress they feared he might have an intussusception; but the paediatrician came in and said he did not think it was and sent him home.

My DD is trying to get an appointment with the doc for tomorrow.

Has anyone else ever had a child doing this? - he seems perfectly well in the mornings, then everything goes downhill again. He has lost a lot of weight.

How worrying - just when you thought he was on the mend. Just wondering if your husband could accompany him to the hospital and insist it's investigated further - I'm sure a bug shouldn't behave like this. Poor little guy - his parents must be so worried about him. I hope they get to the bottom of it.

If he has another episode (and I do hope he doesn't) can they take him to A&E while he is being sick and in pain so that they can see how bad he is?
Is he having something at lunch-time that he is violently allergic to?

Just catching up with gransnet lg and adding my best wishes for your little grandson. He's had a tough time of it, poor mite.

Sorry to hear it's not going well for your grandson luckygirl. Even if his gut was made very sensitive by a nasty bug it does seem to be taking a long time to settle down. Hope the GP is listening to your daughter's concerns.

Just seen this and read the posts re improvement, but now it's starting again.
That must be awful for you all and doesn't sound as if it can be just a bug.
Is he getting dehydrated with all the vomiting?

thatbags Tue 12-Apr-16 17:33:48

Oh my goodness! That's awful! It sounds much more complicated than "a bug". The whole point of up-chucking is to get rid of bugs fast and that doesn't seem to be happening. Have they been back to the GP?

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 12-Apr-16 17:21:21

Oh no! What a disappointment. Definitely watch out for pain round tummy button which goes down to right side. Hope it's just a bug taking it's time. sad

Could it be malrotation of the bowel ? I am sure your DH will have considered this possibility so don't mind me thinking aloud.
I do hope you get some answers soon as this is very worrying for the whole family.

Just heard from DD and after one day seeming OK,the poor little chap retched from 4 pm to midnight yesterday. We just have to wait and see. I do wonder whether it is really a bug as they say as the pattern is so odd.

Willow500 Tue 12-Apr-16 10:42:43

I've just read all of these posts and just wanted to say I hope your little grandson is now well on the road to recovery after what sounds like an horrendous illness. It's awful when they're so ill isn't it especially when the doctors can't seem to find a cause.

grannyqueenie Tue 12-Apr-16 00:09:23

Good news about your grandson, hope he carries on improving now.

Oh what wonderful news! Sorry to be so late with my response to your good news post.
I really hope that corner has been well and truly turned. Your DD and SIL must be so relieved. Now to get that weight back on smile.

polyP I am glad that your GS has had some treatment for his condition and that he is living life to the full.

My DGS has turned a corner and is much more like his normal self.

My grandson at age 4 developed Achalasia which is very rare in young children. He couldn't keep anything down, even water as the food could not get through to his stomach. He had (still has) no muscle tone in his oesophagus so peristalsis doesn't happen, and the sphincter leading to the stomach was permanently tightly closed so hardly anything could get through. He lost a lot of weight, had no energy and had to carry a sick bag round with him , poor little chap. There is no cure for this but eventually he had an operation at Gt Ormond St hospital to cut the ring of muscle (sphincter) so it is now permanently open. He still has to eat very carefully and avoid some foods, but his recovery has been amazing. He's grown and put on weight and got all his energy back - can play football etc.
It doesn't sound like the same thing but was my first thought when I read your posts. I can imagine your anxiety as I was beside myself with worry at the time.
Hope all is well with your grandson now.

He's bouncing around this morning and eating for England - DD thinks he has definitely turned the corner now. He just looks different and has a twinkle in his eye. What a relief! smile

Thank you for all your kind messages - he certainly put us all through it!

Got fingers and toes crossed for your little GS Luckygirl.
I find it more of a worry being a grandparent as you just have to wait and see.
Hope he will be feeling much better tomorrow and getting up to mischief

Nana3 Sun 10-Apr-16 22:45:14

Really hoping he continues to improve and has turned that corner, thinking of you.

Luckygirl Sun 10-Apr-16 21:52:29

We will all be keeping a very close eye on him to see how he gets on now. He has had a very strange illness that appeared more like an obstruction than a bug and it has been a big puzzle to everyone. We will all be vigilant for the next few weeks to see what happens. Let us hope this is a one-off.

Jalima Sun 10-Apr-16 21:49:17

Don't want to sound like a prophet of doom but I do hope they check him for coeliac disease - DD has had so many years of misery from babyhood onwards (including several visits to hospital) before diagnosis. And it can be so well managed nowadays.

Hope that he's turned a corner and makes a speedy recovery Lucky
