I'm not going to tell him.....

but I'll bet you think I should.

Next week we're off on holiday to visit old friends in Norway, this couple have been very close to my husband since he was a boy and they're now very old and frail. The husband has terminal cancer and so we are not likely to see them again. It will be hard for my husband to say goodbye. I'm flying home and my husband will get home three weeks later as he's cycling home.

I've had a sore throat for some time and had the feeling of having a lump there. I saw the GP last week and got a very speedy referral to the hospital. I didn't tell my husband about the hospital appointment because I wanted to know what I was dealing with before worrying him. I saw the consultant today for an endoscopy and there is in fact a lump in my throat, which the consultant suspects is benign, but he's referred me for an MRI scan and biopsy. I imagine the date of the scan will be as soon as I return from my holiday. So, I've decided not to mention it to my husband. If I tell him he'll insist on returning home with me and thereby miss out on time to process saying goodbye to his old friend and on some much needed R&R. The lump is most likely benign and if it isn't then at least my lovely man will have had a great experience to set him up for caring for me.

We usually talk about everything and if I was worried and needed his support I would certainly tell him, but I really want him to have his adventure. If the lump does turn out to be worrisome he can fly home and be back the same day if I need him to. (I haven't told anyone else either so this is our little secret - shh!)

Some more positive vibes coming your way, ga. Hope the soreness in your mouth soon goes away and you make a quick recovery. flowers

Well that wasn't too bad!
I spent a long time in the recovery room as I kept falling asleep and my heart rate was very low, but eventually they sent me back to the ward where they continued to monitor me, finally allowing me to go home 15 minutes before the Day Case ward closes. On my way out I vomited spectacularly just as I reached the nurse station so I had to leave in a wheelchair clutching a sick bowl. Oh the indignity!!
Today I've only been sick once and mostly slept. My tongue is very sore and the inside of my mouth is scratched and a bit raw, but my throat isn't as painful as I expected, so that's a bonus. The surgeon took several tissue samples, but seemed very positive, although they don't give anything away until the results come back, which will be at least two weeks.
I have a whole army of people praying for a good outcome and lots of others sending 'positive thoughts' - so I'm feeling well supported and very hopeful.
Thank you for your good wishes Gransnetters - they're much appreciated. smile

Fingers crossed for tomorrow, GA. Your wonderful man is living up to his name! flowers

Wow - that was quick. I'm going in for the biopsy tomorrow! I still feel very positive so it will come as a bit of a surprise if the thing does turn out to be malignant. The Wonderful Man has been offered compassionate leave and is actually taking it so that he can stay at home to keep an eye on me. smile I do feel awkward about being the cause of so much worry so I'm hoping the results will be good news and come through quickly.

Good luck with your GA and I hope you get good results. Well done for keeping quiet. I would never have managed it as I am too much of an open book.

Had similar issue re telling my daughters about having potential breast cancer (thankfully not)checked out .Both said afterwards they would have worried for weeks .DH is very much the 'worry about it when you have to 'school .

ask that the tests could be carried out for when you are both home after the holiday, you will need someone to be with you after a endoscope any ways. Go and have a lovely holiday and dont worry about anything.

cornergran Sat 11-Jun-16 22:37:25

So pleased ga, you definitely did the right thing and your wonderful man is surely that. All good wishes for the future.
