Thyroid removal

I have just been diagnosed with an enlarged (but working OK) thyroid, and told it needs to be removed.

I am worried about having an op (only previous op was tonsils out aged 8!), and any side effects of taking Thyroxine for the rest of my life.

I am particularly worried about gaining weight after my op, as I am already a big girl!

Please does anyone have experience of thyroid removal, or any advice/reassurance they can offer?

Can't say anything bout the op but I am hypothyroid and have been on Thyroxine for many years. I can only say that I have had no side effects from the Thyroxin once they got the dosage right. I did end up in A and E one evening with some rather unpleasant effects as the dosage was too much. However once that was corrected all went well. I have a 6 month check to see the levels are right and am fine, and I have never had any problems regarding weight since I have been on it. Once you are over the op and settled on the correct dosage I am sure you will be fine. Oddly enough DD1 has just been diagnosed as hypothyroid too.

Good luck jacalpad I'm sure all will go well but its quite understandable that you are apprehensive. sunshine

Good luck - I'm sure you'll be fine. I too have been on thyroxine for over 25 years and never had any problems although have just had some issues which has prompted a thyroid function test.

Know quite a few people that have had their thyroid removed and/or are on thyroxine. Once you get the does right and keep on top of your blood tests you'll be fine. Also, if you're still of an age when you have to pay for prescriptions, you will no longer have to.
