Greyduster The walk to the car did not help, so you also need rest as well as some exercise. Elevate it when watching TV.

DH was giving a talk in Edinburgh and I went to sightsee . Fell down a dip for a fountain in I think it was St George's place. Because DH often ends up with a migraine after giving a talk I had heavy duty pain killers in my bag and I managed to take one . My ankle was like a balloon and generally thought to have broken it. It wasn't but has become vulnerable . I now carry them permanently.

Anya smile. I definitely didn't vote for Breaksit!

Well ladies, I decided to take your advice and get it checked out. A&E is an hour's drive from us on the other side of the city (that"s what was putting me off getting it looked at, to be honest) but, Maggie, I found we still had a minor injuries clinic attached to our nearest hospital (we thought they'd closed it). Apparently I have severely strained the ligament that runs down the inside of my knee, but there is no major damage. The nurse who looked at the X-rays said "that's a very healthy joint for a lady of your age!" I told her that was reassuring considering everything else is falling to bits at a rate of knots! She did say to keep it mobile, but I won't be going anywhere very far or very fast for a while. Many thanks to you all. ?

Why are do many of us falling over and breaking things?

Is it something to do with Breaksit?

Yes, definitely get it looked at, Greyduster. I had a fall a few weeks back and put off having my hand checked out for 10 days. It turned out I had a broken bone and I could have made things much worse by leaving it.

My advice would be to find a minor injuries clinic near you. They're much less busy than A & E as they only deal with certain things, but they have all the X-ray equipment etc on site and will then refer you to the appropriate hospital for treatment. You can go to any clinic - we drove past the one near us with the bad reviews to get to one with good feedback and I had excellent treatment with hardly any waiting about. Good luck!

Think anya'is right, it's not something to guess about. At the very least phone for advice? Hope it mends soon.

I think you should get it 'looked at' possible A&E as it might need an x-Ray. Some injuries need to be kept stable and rested, others need to be used if you are to recover full use. Get it wrong and you'll regret it.

As one sitting here typing with one finger and one of each of such injuries in both arms I do know what I'm talking about blush and knees are very complicated joints.

I have a couple of knee supports somewhere. Can I find them? No. When we go walking, I always carry a first aid kit with an elastic bandage in it. Did I have it yesterday? NO! Just a bag of plasters, some antiseptic wipes and some painkillers. Sod's law. Tricia I hope he wasn't hurt. It's treacherous up there, especially in the winter. I thought I knew every inch of the moor we were crossing; I was complacent and paid for it.

Poor you! Sounds as if you've done all the right things, RICE etc.
You can get some very good elastic joint supports now, expensive, so maybe get on prescription.
As to falling into a peat bog, we used to walk on the Sheffield moors. One winter's day we were on Kinder Scout, it was covered in snow. Suddenly husband disappeared - he had fallen through a crust of snow into a peat bog!

My neighbour has recently torn her meniscus ans she has been attending the fracture clinic?? I will get an update if I see her.

Gagagran Wed 31-Aug-16 10:29:27

I did something similar to my knee Greyduster while racing back to the car park before my ticket ran out. I went down an unexpectedly deep kerb and twisted my knee badly. It turned out that I had torn
the meniscus in my patella and it was a real buggeration for months. I had to wear a support and found stairs very difficult. I would say it was a year before it was back to as normal as my knees ever are.
Might be worth getting it checked out?

Greyduster Wed 31-Aug-16 10:02:57

I managed to injure my knee yesterday while we we out walking on the moors. I stepped onto what I thought was solid ground and my leg disappeared up to the knee in a bog and I twisted the whole thing. DH hauled me out and eventually I managed to stand on it. We were about two and a quarter miles from the car and there was nothing for it but to try and walk; it would have been harder going back, and further. I took some paracetamol and we managed, slowly, to get back to the car. I don't think it's bad enough to go to A&E because I can put weight on it. I have had ice on it and an elastic bandage since we got home and kept off it as much as possible. Anyone got any other advice? All the years we have been walking the moors and I have never had an accident. I'm usually so sure footed. I feel like an idiot.
