Using initials instead of full words

I only joined three or four weeks ago and I'm finding all the initials being used instead of full words rather annoying! I've managed to work out most of them such as DH, DD, DS, DGS, DGD, etc. but there are quite a few that I have to look up on Google such as ASD's. Why assume everyone knows what it means? Fine using it later on in that conversation when you've already used the full words initially.
On another note, how comes there are men on here, I thought it was Gransnet?!

Well well !! I am a very slow 2 finger typist and find the abbreviations handy , some are medical terms as in PD ie Parkinson's Disease , but usually one can get the meaning from the text . At the top of the page there is a box labeled Acronyms , you might find it useful

At the top of the page there is a box with Acronyms on it. Click on that. It might enlighten you smile

We don't mind Grandfathers being here , they are handy for changing light bulbs and washing the car smile

It's a site mainly for grandparents of either gender, but Gransnet's a convenient and catchy name!

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 10-Sept-16 14:03:47

Most of today's letters only abbreviations, I don't understand.

God knows why we've got grandads. You wouldn't see mine on here.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 10-Sept-16 14:04:24

I mean my DH. Not my grandad. You definitely wouldn't see him on here.

Wobblybits Sat 10-Sept-16 14:50:53

There was me trying to not get you kicked off Jings, wait until next time. And we can do more than change light bulbs --- oh yes, load dishwashers.

sunseeker Sat 10-Sept-16 15:13:00

Not only are there grandads on here but some of us (well me anyway) are not even parents let alone grandparents! Gransnet covers lots of topics not just being a grandparent.

It's vaguely a 'being of that sort of age' thing not about grannies. I love the men and wish we had more of them.

btw why is this under health? confused

Christinefrance Sat 10-Sept-16 15:17:07

I find the initials annoying too Peaseblossom, but do like the fact that there is no gender bias .
Well in the main anyway.

Anya Sat 10-Sept-16 15:18:18

You can load dishwashers wobbly?

hmm but then DH would say he could too. Duh!

Anya Sat 10-Sept-16 15:19:42

Just a quick query....is it you wobbles that I have to,thank for my first successful crop of blueberries ????

Wobblybits Sat 10-Sept-16 15:26:42

If they were sucsessful, it was definitely me, if not, it was the other bloke. And, yes I can load a dishwasher, my problem is that I then forget to switch it on.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 10-Sept-16 17:36:21

shock How did I know you were gonna read this wobblybits?! hmm grin

BlueBelle Sat 10-Sept-16 17:55:42

I m with you all the way peaseblossom I really really dislike the acronyms and don't have the sort of brain that can read the post without internally translating them all which is tedious and sometimes have to look them up I especially dislike all the dears or darlings as unnecessary there that's me getting my flak jacket out and hiding behind the settee
I like having granddads on board, bring us more, I cant tell the difference by the names anyway

BBbevan Sat 10-Sept-16 18:05:05

Well I thought Wobblybits was a big fat lady grin

kittylester Sat 10-Sept-16 18:20:53

The acronyms become second nature eventually. It's something that has been like it since the beginning.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 10-Sept-16 18:28:42

God knows which wobblybits he's talking about, but I can imagine. hmm

Rosieroe Sat 10-Sept-16 19:02:30

I used to be a community representative on a public body wich included representatives of statutory bodies (e.g. housing trust, probation service, fire and rescue) and they would continually talk in acronyms which were gobbledygook to the ordinary members. I would be sitting trying to figure out what the acronym stood for and miss completely what they were talking about! Eventually I asked for a glossary of acronyms to be provided at the start of meetings for those of us who were not familiar with them and thankfully that helped a lot.

rosesarered Sat 10-Sept-16 19:05:43

It's easy to work out usually on here, I never found it to be a problem, and it does save time.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 10-Sept-16 19:24:30

Yes. Easy enough on here. Harder in the wider world (radio presenters, politicians, health experts, etc etc) It's everywhere these days.

hildajenniJ Sat 10-Sept-16 20:16:10

Oh, sorry. I think I'm guilty of the ASD's (autism spectrum disorder) and XLI (x - linked ichthyosis). It's just that two of my grandson's have both conditions, and the other one is free of ichthyosis but does have autism. As a family we speak of ASD's and XLI as it is so familiar to us. I tend to forget that everyone else may struggle to know what they mean. I like the input from the men, I wish there were more brave enough to join.
On a sad note, I miss feetlebaum RIP.flowers

Wobblybits Sat 10-Sept-16 22:59:29

No I'm not a big fat lady, I'm a big fat bloke. However the name WB's has a
different origin related to my last job. I have already explained it on other threads.

Eloethan Sat 10-Sept-16 23:35:37

I always write out the full words - I think it's just as easy to do and easier to understand.
