Tiggypiro Im afraid that I have heard that in many cases the NHS refuses to take back crutches and walking aids!

My neighbout whose husband has died has in he garage all SS's acoutriments available for easier living.

She has rung them to collect, but no response, and she does not drive.

I read somewhere that there are so many of these items not being collected.

What a waste, its scandalous

Can I please make a request that when you are finished with the crutches you return them to the physio dept. When I was using them I was amazed at how many people said that they had a pair in the cupboard/garage etc.

One step on your good foot, one 'step' with your weight on the crutches. It's simple enough! Hope the op goes well, all the best.

I've just had a foot op too. Don't worry about not taking on advice from physio, you'll be well awake by then. It's surprising how quickly you get the knack and also how soon you get down to just one elbow stick. If you are given a surgical shoe the crutches are really just until you get used to walking in the shoe. Good luck.

I had a foot op and I have to say using crutches wasn't a problem - the nurse showed me. I hope it goes well and you have a lovely foot in a few weeks time.

The hospital shouldn't discharge you until the physio is certain you know how to use crutches. If you do forget, there are useful tips on the internet & Youtube, although make sure you use the correct methods eg weight-bearing v non-weight bearing methods.

I am sure the physio will make sure you are confident with the crutches before your discharge. There is a knack to using them which they will teach you.

Foot OP Tomorrow afternoon (fingers crossed)
Finally got my head out of the sand and read all the bumph from hospital regarding
Dressing gown and slippers
no food and drink. My chances of survival. ( Statistically)
Pain relief afterwards.
But no where does it give advice on how to cope with crutches
I don't think that immediately after OP my brain will be able to take on board any ' crutch walking' lessons from a nurse or physiotherapist.
A little while back GNetters helped with advice and wisdom re the General anaesthetic.
So I would be glad of any advice or pearls of wisdom from our trusty GNetters to help with me hobbling around with crutches for the next few weeks.

(This morning just in time
my shower/wash Sleeve cover arrived via amazon)
