My teenage granddaughter had to have a blood test eailier this week. The results show she has Low Alkaline Phosphatase.
Her mum is upset and we are both worried. I've Googled it and it could be caused by a few things.
Has anybody had any experience or know something about it? She doesn't see the doctor until next week.
Thank you.

Does she eat an adequate diet?

She is eighteen years old and always out and about. Her mum and her eat healthily at home but they don't have meat or fish as mum is a vegetarian. When out with friends she may skip meals or buy something from a takeaway or have a wrap. She is quite slim and not overweight.

Ok so from your clues a veggie diet could have made her low in zinc, the most probable cause. Introducing red meat or taking a zinc supplement should remedy that. Rarely a metabolic process could be the cause. I hope all works out well. Do let us know how she fares.

Thank you Isabella. Her mum has Googled it...as you do..and is worried it could be something serious.
i too thought it could be a dietary problem and hope it turns out to be so. It will be easier to rectify if that is the case. I'll let you know how she goes on.Thank you again.

Firstly I would try not to worry. Why did she have a blood test in the first place? There are lots of causes eg anaemia, hypothyroidism, dietary, possible post viral. The test can also give false results due to problems with the anticoagulant in the collecting bottle.. I am sure the test will be repeated and other tests eg phosphate and thyroid function done as well. Hopefully the docs will get to the bottom of it . Do let us know.

She was accidentally pricked with a needle, she is a dental nurse. She had a blood test to make sure she was all right. This showed up then.
