Removal of appendix at 66

I had mine out at 40, when I was told I was considered elderly for such an op! I felt so much better with the pesky thing gone but I think the anaesthetic can take a while to get over.

How long is it since your op?

Sorry, I was 17, not exactly yesterday!

I was 48 when I had mine out. The anaesthetic made me feel sick for days but once that wore off my appetite returned quite quickly.

Take it easy, Angharad. Recovery might take a little in your sixties.

Four weeks, it was tucked up under my rib cage, one minute I was a busy grandmother next a hunched truly feeling old lady not nice, not a very patient person !!!!!

Ok great way to loose a little weight I suppose

Mr Gaga was 69 when he had peritonitis from a burst appendix (which he had ignored for three days) which eventually eventually floored him as the pain increased.

His intestine turned out to be gangrenous right up to his liver so he was very poorly and in hospital for a week and then recuperating at home for 4 or 5 weeks. He was in good physical condition before this, being a keen and regular cyclist so I think he recovered more rapidly than most.

Thankyou, it's funny that one minute you are ok and the wham bam hideous pain I was misdiagnosed with pancreatis discharged and then back the next evening at hospital n more pain and appendix to be removed. I am shocked being fit etc that it has taken me so long to gain some semblance of energy and interest in food, getting there slowly.

Hi Anghared, I had peritonitis in June and subsequent removal of appendix. I am 66 and it took a few weeks to get my appetite back. However, all was not well as histology revealed a malignant tumour in the removed appendix. In August I had what the Americans call 'the mother of all surgeries' a huge 7 hour operation to remove many parts of my abdomen and then I was filled with hot chemotherapy which was removed after an hour. I am 6 weeks into recovery.
Nasty things, appendix, you are much better off without it! I am sure you will soon be back to your old self.

Wow hotmama that appendix probably saved your life you have been through the wringer what is hot chemo I ve never heard of it ?

Maybe that little old appendix did you a favour, sorry you had the hideous operation but with good slow recovery you will get there. Good luck

It's called HIPEC which stands for hot Intraperitoneal chemotherapy. It is poured into the abdomen and heated to 40degrees C and left there for an hour to do its job. I had two sections of bowel removed, ovaries, uterus and Fallopian tubes, greater and lesser omentom and stripping of the paracolic gutters! This was an aggressive treatment and the best option as a prevention for recurrence. However, they found cancer cells on the descending colon which was as a direct result of the appendix cancer. This was all removed. I saw an oncologist yesterday who advised further systemic chemo for three to six months. Not strong enough yet to undergo it but will be going back to see him in three weeks. As you both so rightly say, thank goodness my appendix burst. Sorry to 'piggyback ' on to your post Anghared and I hope your appetite is improving.
