Is there something I should be taking?

I‘m looking for your help and advice. I’m 66 in January. Health good apart from a few aches and pains. Not on any meds or multivits, nothing. My youngest sister seems to be quite surprised by this. I see my doc on average about twice a year. Is there something I should be taking that I’m not aware of.

I hear you. I think she was referring to vitamins etc. Think my sister may have been comparing what she takes to what I or her neighbour take. My sister is on blood pressure meds and takes vits cause she ‘believes’ in them. Seems she’s having a problem with my not agreeing with her.

Re-reading some of the posts, I suddenly noticed a sentence in one of DAncer66's replies
It's just that my younger sister (13 years younger) has an older neighbour who is taking all sorts and she wanted to compare that with what I was taking.

What has the medications this older neighbour is taking got to do with what DAncer66 may or may not take? People, of any age, receive medication for the health problems they have. The health problems individuals have, may increase with age, but the range of health problems they have and the range of medications prescribed for each is so varied that to try to do any kind of comparison on pill count is ridiculous.

Thank you all so very much for your very helpful advice and reassurances.

I don't have a reason for buying bottled water. It's just one of my things. I drink so much of it. I like the Scottish mineral water.

Not worried. It's just that my younger sister (13 years younger) has an older neighbour who is taking all sorts and she wanted to compare that with what I was taking.

When I told her I wasn't taking anything she went into her 'are you sure your taking proper care of yourself' mode.

Thanks again folks for the replies. You have made me feel even healthier and reassured.

An I hope whatever you are taking dose you good.

And if your like me and not taking anything long may it last.

You are very lucky! I dont agree with advice to stay away from doc though- it's vital to have regular check ups in case there's something going on you are not aware of. Dont want to be a scare monger but a friend recently was very ill from something undetected. She'd been proud of never going to gp or taking medication and all the time something serious was happening internally.

My dad died in July aged 95 and he had never taken any medication. Mum is 93 and only has eye drops for glaucoma. My sister is 70 and I am 66 and we don't take anything either.

Dancer66-- I am about your age and have been pondering the same question.

I take no vitamins, rarely even resort to an aspirin for a headache, do plenty of exercise, eat healthily and have always been slim and agile. However, lately, I have noticed the odd twinge in the knees and the beginnings of arthritis in my wrists, thumbs and one big toe. Are the effects of age creeping up on me???

Compared to dear friends , some of whom have suffered terrible ill health, I have been lucky so far. Perhaps, however, it is time to consider taking something..at least to protect joints.
Do they really help, however? confused
From the above posts, the message seems to be that Cod Liver Oil and Vitamin D are must haves at our age......

Thank you - long may it last!

My Mum is nearly 88 & apart from Lemsip for a cold her only other medication is for Neuralgia which affects her face. She was in Boots one day buying Paracetamol (or something similar), girl behind the counter said "what medication are you on?" Mum's response "nothing" - total look of disbelief on girls face. thlgrin

Me on the other hand take far too many but all prescribed apart from cod liver oil caps. Shake me & I'll rattle !!!! thlgrin

Carry on as you are & don't worry you lucky girl thlenvy

I have the great good fortune to "Be" on nothing at the age of 68 1/2.
I do, however, take vit. D and Vit. B. D for general enhancement of mood etc., the sunshine vitamin and Vit. B to help my brain a little... not that it works - but it keeps me happy! grin
Some of us are not so fortunate as hulahoop mentions, and medications are brilliant for those who need them.

hulahoop Mon 31-Oct-16 13:24:13

Hope you continue in good health wish I didn't need medication but we are what we are good job there are these medications so not complaining .

I remember looking after a lady who was in her nineties who never took any drugs apart from the occasional paracetamol if she had a bad cold. She was very slim, ate sparingly and had never been married. So it is possible not to have regular medication.

I take cod liver oil and malt. I had it as a child and I love it, it tastes like toffee. I hope its doing some good too!

Jalima Mon 31-Oct-16 11:20:51

Carry on doing what you're doing and stay out of the doctors clutches as long as you can

You never know what you might catch when you're in the waiting room!

I find cod liver oil capsules repeat on me!!!!

Sheilasue Mon 31-Oct-16 11:00:54

I take a cod liver oil tablet and a vitamin D tablet which is now advised to do especially through the winter months they say October to May, I take two a day all the year because of having hip replacement after a fall. I am 71 and feel fine hope I stay like that.

I got a Wilko water filter jug system (cheaper than Britta) as our Bristol water is harder than nails. The problems with limescale are OTT. I got it as I noticed that the dregs of my nightly water glass were cloudy and had 'bits' in them in the morning.

Now that I use the Wilko jug the dregs are clear and the water actually tastes better (when I can taste...have cold right now). It also makes a nicer cuppa and less staining in our mugs. It's much cheaper than bottled water. The filters are good for 30 days and come in a six pack.

We take vitamin D, and I take Siberien Ginseng so I can have some energy to think! grin

ChrisCross Mon 31-Oct-16 10:32:29

My doc says that a huge percent of people in this country are short on vitamin D - probably for obvious reasons. She tested me and I had practically none in my system at the start of this year. So I'm now prescribed it. Can't say I feel any different though.

Lupin Mon 31-Oct-16 10:23:00

Carry on doing what you're doing and stay out of the doctors clutches as long as you can. If your log in name is pertinent then you've probably set yourself up with the best chance of staying agile and pain free. Jolly good luck to you.

Why do you buy bottled water? a lot of it is the same as tap water anyway, and the price is extortionate............. and the plastic bottles are an environmental nightmare

f77ms Mon 31-Oct-16 07:14:39

grannypiper I great idea and one I will try myself . I know I don`t drink enough water .
dancer I don`t understand why you would be worried about feeling well and not taking any medication ! I wish I could say the same . A Doctor friend told me that if you have a normal balanced diet you don`t need to take any extra vits/ minerals and that it was just a fad and a way of separating a fool from their money ! Lol

grannypiper Mon 31-Oct-16 07:07:08

Wobblybits, great advice Re drinking more water, i started filling a litre and a half jug with water and leaving it next to a glass in the kitchen, gave myself a good talking to and made myself promise to drink every last drop in the jug by the end of the day ( well 7pm as i like to stay in bed all night) and it has made such a difference to me, i can even remember most of my shopping list now.

M0nica Mon 31-Oct-16 05:59:13

I am in my early 70s, I am not on any medication and haven't needed to visit the doctor for about 5 years, although I have an annual routine check-up with the nurse each year. This is par for the course in my family. There is nothing remarkable in your circumstances. You are one of many.

My feeling is to enjoy it while I can, it could change at any time.

DAncer66 Mon 31-Oct-16 03:28:06

Wobblybits and others,

Wow! Lots of good advice. Thank you very much.

I buy bottled water because I do drink a lot of it.
More so now that I've cut down on tea and coffee in order to get a decent sleep.

Claudiaclaws Sun 30-Oct-16 21:01:54

I think most of us should be taking vitamin D

Jalima Sun 30-Oct-16 16:24:03

ps there was a dance teacher on our local news the other night - still teaching ballet, lovely, slim and supple and I think she was 85!
