Is there something I should be taking?

I‘m looking for your help and advice. I’m 66 in January. Health good apart from a few aches and pains. Not on any meds or multivits, nothing. My youngest sister seems to be quite surprised by this. I see my doc on average about twice a year. Is there something I should be taking that I’m not aware of.

More water with it.

I think if you feel fit and healthy and are eating a balanced diet you probably wouldn't need any supplements. Having said that, I take a cod liver oil capsule every day except for the days when I eat oily fish.
If I feel a cold virus starting I usually take extra vitamin C but thats all.

Don't worry, enjoy it while you can smile
My friend is 78 and worries that she's not on any medication, while her poor twin sister has had cancer twice.
My husband, 73, takes several vitamins + that supplement for your joints. (can't remember the name.)

I don't like fish very much so take an Omega 3 capsule every morning. My husband has arthritis so also takes one and some turmeric and he thinks one or both of them has reduced the pain.

My optician recommended taking Vitamin C as I have cataracts.

Thanks for the replies and the reassurance.

Linsco56,

As a skinny wee kid I was on cod-liver oil in an attempt to 'build' me up. Can't stand the smell of it to this day. Might try those capsules though. Is it true that they're good for the joints, and give you an apatite?

Look forward to anything else you folks have to offer.

I have some osteoarthritis and have been doing daily cod liver oil capsule and glucosamine for the past 12 years. May not make any difference but I can report that I am probably more mobile in my hip joints than I was when I was working. But this could equally be due to retirement reducing stress by miles, now daily walk with the dog, weekly Pilates session and general enjoyment of life! Dare not stop the supplements just in case, but at 67 would regard myself as very healthy, carrying a little too much weight ((wish I could lose a stone). Have not been near the doctor, except for annual flu jab, for a couple of years and intend to keep it that way for a long time yet.

Eat well, not too much, exercise a bit every day preferably in the fresh air and enjoy life. Seems to work so far.

I'm 70, don't take any medications or multivitamins and apart from stiff joints which I exercise regularly, I'm fit and well.
I'd rather spend my money on going out to lunch with friends. thlwink

Not too sure about increasing appetite DAncer but I take them for their anti inflammatory benefits. I usually buy them from Holland & Barrett but wait until they're on offer in their penny sale.

Yes, the fish oil capsules are great for joints, I also take vitamin D and a multi vitamin tablet as well.Your GP should do regular hypertension checks and blood tests ( mine does.)

My "Take more water with it" was not a flippant comment, few of us drink enough water and it would improve our health if we did (including me)

Jalima Sun 30-Oct-16 16:22:40

You seem to be doing just fine!!
(sometimes I think that vitamins give me aches and pains but DD said it is all in my mind!!)

I would just Keep On Dancing Dancer66!

Jalima Sun 30-Oct-16 16:24:03

ps there was a dance teacher on our local news the other night - still teaching ballet, lovely, slim and supple and I think she was 85!

Claudiaclaws Sun 30-Oct-16 21:01:54

I think most of us should be taking vitamin D

Wobblybits and others,

Wow! Lots of good advice. Thank you very much.

I buy bottled water because I do drink a lot of it.
More so now that I've cut down on tea and coffee in order to get a decent sleep.

I am in my early 70s, I am not on any medication and haven't needed to visit the doctor for about 5 years, although I have an annual routine check-up with the nurse each year. This is par for the course in my family. There is nothing remarkable in your circumstances. You are one of many.

My feeling is to enjoy it while I can, it could change at any time.

Wobblybits, great advice Re drinking more water, i started filling a litre and a half jug with water and leaving it next to a glass in the kitchen, gave myself a good talking to and made myself promise to drink every last drop in the jug by the end of the day ( well 7pm as i like to stay in bed all night) and it has made such a difference to me, i can even remember most of my shopping list now.

grannypiper I great idea and one I will try myself . I know I don`t drink enough water .
dancer I don`t understand why you would be worried about feeling well and not taking any medication ! I wish I could say the same . A Doctor friend told me that if you have a normal balanced diet you don`t need to take any extra vits/ minerals and that it was just a fad and a way of separating a fool from their money ! Lol

Chattybarbara Mon 31-Oct-16 09:59:23

Why do you buy bottled water? a lot of it is the same as tap water anyway, and the price is extortionate............. and the plastic bottles are an environmental nightmare

Carry on doing what you're doing and stay out of the doctors clutches as long as you can. If your log in name is pertinent then you've probably set yourself up with the best chance of staying agile and pain free. Jolly good luck to you.

My doc says that a huge percent of people in this country are short on vitamin D - probably for obvious reasons. She tested me and I had practically none in my system at the start of this year. So I'm now prescribed it. Can't say I feel any different though.

I got a Wilko water filter jug system (cheaper than Britta) as our Bristol water is harder than nails. The problems with limescale are OTT. I got it as I noticed that the dregs of my nightly water glass were cloudy and had 'bits' in them in the morning.

Now that I use the Wilko jug the dregs are clear and the water actually tastes better (when I can taste...have cold right now). It also makes a nicer cuppa and less staining in our mugs. It's much cheaper than bottled water. The filters are good for 30 days and come in a six pack.

We take vitamin D, and I take Siberien Ginseng so I can have some energy to think! grin

Sheilasue Mon 31-Oct-16 11:00:54

I take a cod liver oil tablet and a vitamin D tablet which is now advised to do especially through the winter months they say October to May, I take two a day all the year because of having hip replacement after a fall. I am 71 and feel fine hope I stay like that.

Marieeliz Mon 31-Oct-16 11:15:07

I find cod liver oil capsules repeat on me!!!!

Jalima Mon 31-Oct-16 11:20:51

You never know what you might catch when you're in the waiting room!
