First skin tag!

Evening all,

I seem to have acquired a skin tag on the side of my neck, just sort of appeared a few weeks ago.

It's fairly small, no doubt others wouldn't even notice it, but it's really bugging me!

I seem to be unable to resist fiddling with it blush and even sort of picking/scratching at it blushblush

I am very tempted to "borrow" one of Mr P's disposable razors, slap some foam on and whip it off!

It's not big enough to tie a bit of thread round, and as it is not painful, I'm loath to take up surgery time at the docs.I've seen skin tag removing liquid advertised in some newspapers, but it's not particularly cheap.

Any thoughts?

phoenix I bought the liquid persevered for 3 weeks , 3 times a day, zilch
It had grown in that time!
Mine was under bra line and also one on inner thigh
Went to Dr and he burnt it off.
No pain just bit of burning flesh smell.
Pity the next patent.
There will be a few GNers who will explain how to use cotton if the tag is small.
if large don't use thread as can cause no stop bleeding.
Good luck.

I had a skin tag on my neck. Quite small but just added to the general deterioration of me. Being a Taurus, bull in a China shop type, I sorted it thus: Pinched it hard with my (clean) fingernails at its base. This seemed to restrict the blood flow to the tag, few days later it fell off leaving no mark or any ill effects. I would probably do the same again but on no account would suggest anyone tries it. Only saying.

Yes tying cotton round the base works but looks a bit odd. Think it's more of a cosmetic thing than medical. A reputable beauty clinic will laser it off for you. Hate to say this but as I have got older they have proliferated especially on my neck. The joys of being a lady of a certain age.

I used my fingernails to pinch one off my neck a couple of days ago because I found myself constantly fiddling with it. I can't remember when I got my first one, but now they're everywhere!

I have one right on my cheek, which I hate. I look like a witch. I am seeing the dermatologist in a couple of weeks and hope she will do something about it.

Grannyknot Wed 25-Jan-17 22:06:28

I have very strong pincers fingernails. Dab of TCP afterwards, and job done.

ninathenana Wed 25-Jan-17 22:11:45

I've used the pinch method on a couple in the neck area.
I've had a small one right in the outer corner of my eye for as long as I can remember. I'm not brave enough to try it there.

A lot of gp and some dermatologist have stopped removing skin tags non malignant moles etc because they don't get funding because it's classed as cosmetic . It is in news about patients paying gp for these things .

I have done both, pinched and tied with cotton.
My son had quite a large one just below his armpit, mentioned it to doc when he was there for something else. Doc looked at it and told him to get me to tie cotton around the base. He had never heard of such a thing and was a bit dubious lol. But I did it and it came off a few days later.

What a timely post.. I too have my first skin tag but between my breasts so not obvious thank goodness. I remember noticing my mum having several near her bra line when I was washing her during her final illness. I read about the cotton tying but there's no way I could do that on mine, too small and awkward position.
I also have a few cherry angiomas (I think) around the same area. The joys of growing old!!!

I think it is unlikely that everyone – or even anyone – who has posted here must be older than me, so I guess that I am just very lucky as I'd never even heard of skin tags until someone mentioned them on Gransnet. Neither my mama who lived to the age of 92 nor I (66 at the moment) have ever had any.

MissAdventure Thu 26-Jan-17 08:33:14

I cut mine off with nail clippers! blush
I'm sure its not recommended, and they can bleed a fair bit, but I have a plaster at the ready.

Christinefrance Thu 26-Jan-17 08:34:53

You are lucky then absent. If there is any age related appearance thing I get it. Thinning hair, thread veins, skin tags, etc. My daughters complain vociferously when a new one arrives, " is this what we have to look forward to now Mother "
At least I'm relatively compos mentis. grin

seacliff Thu 26-Jan-17 08:42:29

Oh no, yet another horrible thing to look forward to....... Give us a break old age.... There must be some good things? Yes I know, its better than the alternative!

gillybob Thu 26-Jan-17 09:29:26

Don't whatever you do, Phoenix do what my friend did.

She read that rubbing garlic on a skin tag would make it eventually drop off. Being the impatient type she thought she could fast forward the treatment and decided to tape a small piece of garlic to her inner thigh. The skin tag did drop off, but it took a small chunk of leg with it. shockThe result was a very nasty burn and minor surgery. She is left with a horrid scar.

annodomini Thu 26-Jan-17 10:44:49

I have had several skin 'tags' and the doctors told me that they were papillomas, caused by a virus. Each time they were 'frozen' off by the GP with no lasting effects.

hildajenniJ Thu 26-Jan-17 11:10:59

I had one on my neck too. I didn't mess about with razors or other such things, it was fairly long, so I just pulled it off between my finger and thumb, (freshly washed of course). It has not grow back.

Auntieflo Thu 26-Jan-17 11:37:19

Must be the year of the skin tag. I have had one or two in the past, and dealt with them by the cotton trick. This year, especially around my neck, they are popping up apace. There is a biggish one, and it is currently being strangled by cotton. I think it is going to be a battle between it and me, but I shall persevere.

Charleygirl Thu 26-Jan-17 16:08:03

phoenix please do not remove the skin tag using a razor or any other implement. Please do the sensible thing and get your GP to remove it. Mine has a minor ops clinic once a week, does your? If you start to remove it, as others have said, you may start to bleed quite profusely.

grannypiper Thu 26-Jan-17 16:12:07

OUCH

gillybob Thu 26-Jan-17 16:13:59

I thought it was the year of The Rooster Auntieflo.

Just shows what I know. grin

Auntieflo Thu 26-Jan-17 16:29:08

Gillybob. ??

Thanks for all the replies, always appreciated!

I think I will mention it to the GP when I next have to go, won't make an appointment just for that.

Have noticed a few things recently, the way I seem to walk like an old lady when I first get up (the hip creaks, the right ankle strongly objects to going downstairs) and one of my elbows has decided to wake me up in the night by hurting, don't know why, I haven't injured it.

And I'm only 58! confused
