It started Tuesday I coughed so much I'm in pain now every time I cough around my ribs. I feel washed out due to little sleep and the sickness. Generally I try to fight on but this time I've just sunk on the sofa. Wondering which is the best way forward to aid recovery.

Three weeks into the horrible cough virus. I was in the Supermarket today and wondered what the wonderful smell was and realised it was bread. I had lost my sense of taste and smell with this nasty virus and only just realised.

Thanks Jalima smile will go to Boots tomorrow.

Jalima Fri 03-Mar-17 19:58:31

I bought it in Boots rosesarered.
I bought the normal Otrivine nasal spray as well but haven't used that one.

This morning I was sneezing a lot again and thought 'oh, no, this is the gift that keeps on giving' but it's just a slightly stuffy nose again now.

My DD is very keen on cider vinegar with honey and hot water.

I've just started with a cold this morning which I'm not happy about but so far the cough hasn't materialised. After having Noro 2 weeks ago and a black eye in Jan my year is not going well so far! My friend has had the cough too and was told to sip cider vinegar, honey & lemon which she said has worked well. Hope you all feel better soon flowers

rosesarered Wed 01-Mar-17 17:55:18

I may give that a go Jalima can you buy it across the counter?

Jalima Wed 01-Mar-17 17:42:13

I bought a nasal spray (Otrivine I think) which is a natural one with eucalyptus and sea water - it seems to work quite well. It is the nasal congestion that can cause an irritating cough, as it can drip down the back of your throat (according to our GP)

Sorry if that is TMI.

Hello GrannyA11i and welcome to the forum flowers
Yes, the Covonia Catarrh Linctus is helpful isn't it? Funnily enough I came back onto this thread today to say the same thing about local honey, that would certainly help with flower based allergies.Mine seems to be tree pollen, so not sure it would help that, but am going to buy local honey anyway.

GrannyA11i Wed 01-Mar-17 13:49:16

I've got it but coupled with a severe threat infection that closed my throat up so I couldn't speak properly or even enjoy my usual cup of tea. ? Dr gave me antibiotics for the throat pain infection which has almost gone but the eye watering cough continues to plague me at night. Now DH has started it we'll never get any sleep! I use manukahoney and like it. I've heard that local honey is good as it is from pollen specific to your area. Corvonia Herbal Catarrh Linctus stopped me coughing long enough to get to sleep last night! First time in over a week! Roll on "Proper Spring" !

I've had the irritating cough with sinus pain and snuffly cold but the worse thing for me was the upset tummy with abdominal cramps. My son had it and shook it off in a week (young and strong) but it's clinging to me. sad

It may sound wierd but I read it on gransnet on another thread and it really works - put Vick ointment on the soles of your feet then put on cotton socks when you go to bed. I can go all night without coughing if I do this, otherwise I am lying peacefully about to nod off when I start choking and have to sit up and sip watet, then suck a cough sweet which I am afraid of swallowing whole if I start coughing again.

It's almost worth catching a cold!

rosesarered Fri 24-Feb-17 09:38:10

Maw my shoe cupboard is already full to bursting, but I agree with the sentiment.grin

rosesarered Fri 24-Feb-17 09:36:47

Have had this cough/sore throat/cold since early Dec.On and off ( mostly on) and started up again with it on Wed this week, coughing madly, especially if I try to eat anything.also catarrh back again ( oh joy!)
When friends came for coffee and cake, made sure I didn't have the cake otherwise would have spattered them with crumbs.grin
DH complains that I 'cough on his head' during the night. So he will be going down with this soon I expect.Sorry that you have all got this horrid virus, but must say nice to know that it's not just me, as it has gone on for so very long now.
Even elder DGS who never gets a cold has one at the moment, so it must be a nasty virulent strain.
????????? for all.

MawBroon Fri 24-Feb-17 09:16:42

I just love this!
For those who don't speak German it translates roughly as
"I'm going into town to buy myself something for my cold. Maybe some shoes"
grin

NfkDumpling Tue 14-Feb-17 07:14:12

Touch wood, it has bounced back to us - so perhaps something in the honey did work magic!

NfkDumpling Tue 14-Feb-17 07:11:41

I had it before Christmas and it didn't clear properly until mid January. The chemist advised menthol chrystals as tanith said as the menthol not only clears the tubes but soothes and heals as well. That, with Lemsip max strength, which knocks me out, ensured that I stayed in bed and slept through the worst of it. Warmed honey and lemon soothed sore throat too.

Re Manika honey I was told, albeit by a bee keeper, that the important thing is to get natural pure honey and not commercial, overheated, sterilised stuff which has had all the stuffing knocked out of it! Certainly his advise to eat only local honey helped my rape flower allergy cough so we now only have 'proper' honey. I think Manuka is unpasteurised too.

Just when I thought the germs had gone Mr C begins another sneezy cold and is coughing again. Now my sore threat is back along with the cough. flipping boomerang germs.

Jalima Mon 13-Feb-17 23:24:24

The same with me JessM, I felt so much better early last week than I had in ages, then on Thursday the head cold came on with a vengeance and now has become catarrh and a chesty cough.

Hellsbella Mon 13-Feb-17 22:26:58

I'm in the second week of it now. It seemed to be clearing up last Monday and then swooped back in on Wednesday with a vengeance. Worst cough I've ever had (apart from whooping cough) and a really heavy cold. I look after my little GC and between them, their father and my other son, we just seem to be batting it round between us.
Got some antibiotics today for the chest infection so hoping for a miracle very soon.
Get well soon everyone!

Cath9 Tue 07-Feb-17 23:00:00

I caught this cough and cold from my my son, who was home from work for a few months, as he does contract work.
Had it now for one week, so hopefully by next week it will have disappeared as I am sure my son will be feeling better as he is now working in Africa, so enjoying warmer weather.

I haven't had such a bad cold for many years.

Sounds just like mine Jess which started in mid-November, including the intercostal muscle and the follow-up Sneezies. Still having the odd coughing fit even now.

cornergran Sun 05-Feb-17 22:27:09

Don't want to add to the depression but mine began the first week in December and is still alive and well. hmm.

JessM Sun 05-Feb-17 22:04:23

Oh yes there is a nasty cough virus isn't there. This Year's Guest Virus. Bit of a temperature when it starts and then a tickly cough that goes on. I pulled an intercostal muscle too. DH managed to get a gooey chest, conjunctivitis and then sore throat and swollen glands as complications. And yes some digestive not-quite-rightness.
Doesn't quite qualify as a "flu-like-illness" though does it, just a pain in the neck.
And just when I thought I was Really Better at last, I've picked up a really sneezy head cold. Something I've not had for years.
Suspect This Year's Guest Virus might have some sort of depressing effect on the immune system.
At least we haven't got the dreaded Winter Vomiting Virus, folks.
Incidentally if you are taking something like Lemsip, check the inserts as there are some medications that don't mix well with it. Never occurred to me until a pharmacist mentioned it.

NanaMacGeek Sun 05-Feb-17 21:41:44

I've been coughing since the end of November. It's been awful, and after a while I seemed to get even worse. I also tried to sleep sitting up and the coughing fits went on and on leaving me trembling, my heart pounding and feeling feverish. Recently, I was diagnosed as having a bacterium which was susceptible to the antibiotics the doctor then prescribed for me. I'm just starting to feel better although it's a very slow process. If you have an underlying chronic health condition (I have) and have been coughing for some time, it is worth getting checked by a GP who should send off a sputum sample for analysis. I assumed I had a virus but needed antibiotics urgently as I had a bug that is dangerous once it takes hold.

I'm fed up with this cough /cold. It's the second time I've had it in two months..... but this latest version seems to be the worst. Yesterday I was coughing so much I had to leave a meeting, this morning I had to leave church due to so much coughing and I hadn't even had time to sing a hymn!. My friend has recommended salt water gargles....they give some temporary relief.. Beechams MAX STRENGTH capsules have helped. BUT what do you do if you start coughing - and you know it's going to be a long coughing fit - do you leave the room, meeting, church ????
