Acid reflux

I have been suffering from this recently. I fear it is due to falling off the low carb wagon and eating too much bread. I was interested to read on the low carb support thread that carbs are thought to cause reflux.
How do others manage this problem? My GP suggested eating little and often (rather than my usual lots and often!) and taking Gaviscon. She thinks the irritating cough I thought was due to blood pressure meds was probably through soreness from the acid.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

* Anniebach* LCHF stands for low carb, high fat. Or asAnya once correctly said healthy fat.So no bread, potatoes, rice etc. But full fat yogurt, butter and cream. There is an excellent LCHF threat on GN under Diet and Exercise. Lots of help on there, support and great recipes.
For supper this evening we had chicken satay and steamed broccoli followed by one square of 85% chocolate. As I said it is very easy to do, no counting calories and no acid reflux.

Potato causes me problems and I have just picked up the courage to eat one , gulp

I'm thinking LCHF, stands for low carbohydrate, high fat diet maybe ? Because carbs, even the healthy ones porridge, bananas seem to give me acid reflux. Bread definitely does.

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 18:09:26

What is the LCHF diet please BB?

BBbevan Sun 15-Oct-17 18:07:47

I used to have dreadful acid reflux. However since going on the LCHFdiet it has disappeared. I did relapse on holiday and had fish and chips. Boy, did I regret it. DH always jokes that the shares in Gaviscon must have plummeted since we went low carb.

Ooooh Welshwife, crusty bread and jam ? Perhaps one day.

Can't ring my pharmacist , she is one of my sisters, things are not good between us, she would be professional but cold

Welshwife Sun 15-Oct-17 17:42:11

What about talking to a pharmacist? Sometimes they have very good ideas and maybe able to help you.
I am another who panics if the store of Gaviscon gets too low - the GP knows about it and when I had an endoscopy a few years ago it showed nothing so the surgeon just said to watch what I eat and try and cut out what sets me off - very difficult sometimes when you are out in company - and just now and then I would give anything for fresh crusty bread and jam!

No your most certainly not a whingerAnnie, do hope you start to pick up soon.

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 16:51:12

I had forgotten about complan, duh, had it for ages after the ulcer burst , thank you, it would be a start , if I had some energy I could try harder to get myself together. Oh I have whinged blush

Jamison Sun 15-Oct-17 16:38:28

Annie how about some complan or protien drinks, don't kow if they would be any good, but may help.

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 16:27:44

Jane, I asked , a nutritionist telephoned me, talked about genetics ,meant nothing to me, then said just eat what you want to.
I asked locally if there was someone I could consult, one woman contacted me, £70 for a diagnoses, by pendulum!

I must be fair to my GP, I have trouble trusting, some years ago I had severe stomach pains, was treated for stress, IBS, one evening an ulcer popped , so much blood, frightening.

Oh well, I will have to get a grip , seem to have lost all self confidence and trust, sorry all x

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 16:17:27

It comforts me Pamela

A jar of honey Annie, that will be a jar of sugar then!
Not a good thing IMO.

Jane10 Sun 15-Oct-17 15:57:09

Anniebach! That doesn't sound good. Can the GP not refer you for a really detailed dietary analysis from someone who could help you to have a more extensive diet?

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 13:06:08

Harrigan, I have had seven blood tests, doctor expected malnutrition as did I, only deficiency was bit low in vit D and folic acid. I eat a jar of honey a day ! only explanation is I am getting minerals and vitamins from this . I feel so stupid, no, I am stupid , this has been going on since February, I was too embarrassed to join this thread earlier but last night felt desperate . I just seem to have lost the plot this year

harrigran Sun 15-Oct-17 12:53:11

Annie, if your diet is so restricted you will be deficient in essential minerals and vitamins. I urge you to get a medical consultation.

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 10:44:33

f77, I don't get heartburn, don't get pain now from IBS but have a very strict diet , no green veg, no fruit, no bread ,

Now I wonder if not eating from 6pm until 9.30am next morning could be too long and causing more problems.

I long for bread, haven't eaten it for years, but wheat free products always seem to have soya and that's a no no.

I must get this sorted , I am wasting away

Anniebach Sun 15-Oct-17 10:30:46

Nellie, I cannot take anymore foods out of my diet, I survive on rice cakes , chicken and honey , hence loss of weight

Jane10 Sun 15-Oct-17 09:39:58

I discovered DH hiding the wrappers of dozens of packets of Rennies (he thought I'd blame him for eating too strong curries).I insisted he saw the GP. As suspected -Helicobacter pylori. Treated simply and easily. No more heartburn and gastric reflux. Its always worth testing for.
When I worked with non verbal adults with learning disabilities, if there was an unexplained change in 'challenging behaviour', we always tested for helicobactor. It was amazing how common it was.

Annie see my post further up . Sounds as if you have the same as me (gastro oesophageal reflux) The cough is also related as the acid irritates your throat . I have found Gaviscon after every meal or snack helps . Also colperamin from the chemist gives some relief . Prop your bed up at the head end . I sometimes have to sleep sitting up on the sofa too .

I think you really need to take any foods that you think are really giving you problems right out of your diet and then gradually reintroduce them to see what happens.

My little DGS2 about 2.5yrs now, has had reflux problems since he was weaned.
He developed a lot of allergies. Pulses of all sorts, no baked beans, peas etc and nuts of all sorts and , few more odd foodstuffs .
On one occasion his reflux issues caused him to be bluelighted to A &E at night as he seemed to be having difficulties breathing because of the reflux.

He was also frequently being sick every where after eating.
I saw one of these episodes. His dad got the piriton into him while I held him down and he was making croupy noises and crying while I held him and he eventually almed down and went to sleep. (with me prodding him every so often. )

After a number of other investigations at the children's hospital DD was advised to take him off all dairy products and DD says this has really made a huge difference. (He actually tolerates soya milk and oat milk which is fortified) but cannot take the nut milks .

He is so much better now but will be monitored.
No icecreams for anyone in the family now though, it would not have been fair on the wee chap.

Oh, Annie, that sounds dreadful. So sorry to hear of your ill health and I hope someone will be along soon with useful advice.

Anniebach Sat 14-Oct-17 22:31:30

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I so need advice .

Every night for several months I am woken by wind so uncomfortable it seems to crush against my spine and ribs and I get very hot, this lasts about an hour to hour and half, I then cool down. Sleep for about another hour and wake with a racking cough. Have had a chest X-ray , all clear, I am so very tired, sleep most afternoons for about two hours. I also have an ulcer and IBS, from these I developed an eating disorder.

Any advice please, I would be so grateful, I am now thinking of sleeping on the sofa , the problems come when in bed

I would be so grateful, I have lost more weight, size 8 is now lose , I eat little so the weight loss is my fault

Annie x

I sip water and suck strepsils to prevent coughing when I go out - I belong to a theatre group and am terrified of having one of my bad coughing fits that end up with me burping or bringing up my last meal! I don't eat until I get home!

giulia Thu 28-Sept-17 17:12:10

ps: but what is the best remedy for the irritating tickly cough I DO get?
