I have read Gransnet for ages now but this is the first time I have posted anything. I have suffered from anxiety and depression on and off for most of my adult life usually treated with medication. After a particularly difficult year I find myself going down that road again. I do not want to use medication yet again and was wondering if anyone could suggest any self help books that might help. I have found somewhere that I may be able to get counselling but have to wait eight weeks for first appointment.

So sorry to read about your anxiety & depression Tuppence15, I lived for many years with a fellow sufferer, who tried differing remedies to alleviate his depression. There are so many counselling books out there & really it's a case of trial & error as to which may suit your own personality. Your personality is key to finding out what will suit you i.e. do you like facts & figures or meditive thinking or are you more practical? Ideally if you know or can fathom out the source of your anxiety you can go on line & find access to the books most dedicated to your particular situation. Most depressions have roots in our learnt attitudes & situations from childhood, so learning to replace old learnt thoughts about ourselves from childhood is a step in the right direction, we need to be a caring parent to the child who still lives in our adult selves. Psychology books are very helpful, going on line to access self help books will help you find an outlook that you can buy into, good luck you are not alone xx

I have a low but ongoing anxiety problem. Can hack most things but any sign of conflict or upset within the family has me floored, and I want to make everyone 'be happy'.

A few years ago I read The Worry Cure ( by Dr Robert ?? I think). It's on Amazon. I still have the book and dip into it now and again.
It didn't tell me much that I didn't know but helped me in my attitude. That anxiety is natural but how to handle it so that it doesn't take over. I thought it was really good. Recommended it to a couple of friends who came back to me to say they thought it was excellent.

I think that many of the books by Thich Nhat Hahn might bring you comfort..
