So sick of it. Had just got over a bad virus when WHAM. Coughing is such a pain and don't get me started on the runny nose! It can't be flu though as no high temperature, so probably have that to look forward to as well... Keep having to restock paper hankies. Appetite completely went. And exhausted! Couldn't even take the tree decorations down without stopping to rest several times. At least up and about now, but still having to take it easy. Sympathy to all fellow sufferers.

I have been taking Paracetamol 1000x4 times a day.

This is a very odd one!.
I have been unwell since Boxing Day but on the mend I would say. Still have the awful spasms of coughing up green stuff!!. I spent the first few days in bed most of the time as I felt very weak. Yesterday I felt well enough to take down some of the decorations. Like others I have for the first time in my life completely lost my sense of taste and smell. Chocolate tastes just awful which is good and I have lost a few pounds as I couldn’t eat a thing for the first week and still have no appetite for anything .
What is so odd about it is that it fluctuates from day to day or even just every few hours. I can feel well in the morning but bad again in the afternoon.
Last night I actually got 8 hours sleep. Many things have been recommended my my medic friends but what has helped me is Potters Chesty Pastilles. They clear my nose and help to bring up the horrible green phlegm!.
Beconase spray has been recommended together with NeilMed Sinus Rinse but I haven’t needed either as I do not have a blocked up nose.
My friend had this before Christmas and she is still coughing a bit. I would say that I’ve been coughing for England in the last 10 days, day and night non stop almost, it is much better today, so far anyway but it might change by this afternoon. I do feel a lot better today but it’s only 10.30am, poor husband seems to be worse today and we started this on the same day. Up till now he’s been fine with just a bit of a cough but he’s had a bad night and his cough doesn’t sound too good?.

Yes, DH likewise. His cough was much reduced yesterday and he was almost feeling better as well, but this morning (since midnight), has seen a return of the non-stop coughing.

Well, my 'bug' seems to be back. Awful head and throat this morning and loads of what my children called 'spam'.

SueDonim Thu 04-Jan-18 01:18:28

JaneD3 I'd love to take NN but it affects me so terribly the next day that the cure is worse than the illness! My Dh can take it with no ill-effects, though. confused

WilmaKnickersfit Wed 03-Jan-18 23:56:02

I also now have shares in fisherman's friends (as well as Tena) tchgrin

WilmaKnickersfit Wed 03-Jan-18 23:54:55

Jane I never thought much of night nurse before, although DH swears by it. This time it's the only thing that gives me relief from the coughing for more than 5 minutes. It coats my throat nicely and helps me sleep, even if it's just for a few hours. I can only take it at night though, but that's better than nothing.

JaneD3 Wed 03-Jan-18 23:33:07

SueDonim, night nurse is a good decongestant withoutbthe ephedrine to keep you lively. It always gives me a good nights sleep with a cold.

JaneD3 Wed 03-Jan-18 23:30:45

Even my daughter in her 30s has struggled to shift this one and she was having trouble breathing too. I have had it for a couple of days but nowhere near as badly as her. I think it is going to hang around too.

WilmaKnickersfit Wed 03-Jan-18 23:22:34

Day 4 with no voice, got Olympic standard cough that almost makes me pass out, can whistle the national anthem with my throat. And I am ready to kill. ?

SueDonim Wed 03-Jan-18 22:43:39

sad Maybe you need a tonic as well, Jane10? That's the problem, isn't it - once you've had one you're more vulnerable to more. I've told my mum to stay away from other people for now!

Jane10 Wed 03-Jan-18 22:25:09

Oh no. DH has been coughing all day and has just announced that he's got another cold. He's only just got over his last one which he kindly passed on to me. Here we go again!

Bathsheba Wed 03-Jan-18 21:30:32

Sensible mum SueDonim grin

SueDonim Wed 03-Jan-18 21:16:45

I've discovered that that's what my 90yo mum did last night, Bathsheba, and she felt much better today! grin

Bathsheba Wed 03-Jan-18 21:03:20

Well the night before last I had a really good night, hardly any coughing, very little wheezing and I thought I'd turned a corner. Then last night I was back to square one, coughing and wheezing for England. Had to sleep sitting up sad
Think I'll have a large slug of whisky before bed tonight grin

SueDonim Wed 03-Jan-18 20:55:54

How are all the invalids today? I'm improving but not out of the woods yet. I had a dreadful night's sleep but then I twigged this morning that it's possibly the decongestant tablets that are keeping me awake so I wont take one tonight.

I still can't taste a thing, not even the very nice chilli Dh made for dinner tonight. It's made me very aware of food textures, though!

A friend has recommended Sambucol Forte to ward off any future bugs so I'll be sending Dh out to foray for that tomorrow.

NannyTee Tue 02-Jan-18 16:27:55

Ahh hope he's OK . I woke this morning with the shivers . Felt cold to the bone and sore skin too. Fine now though . Thank goodness.

MissAdventure Tue 02-Jan-18 16:21:28

My grandson seems a bit under the weather today. He goes back to school tomorrow. Hoping he'll not come down with it.

Bathsheba Tue 02-Jan-18 16:18:27

Goodness, opium!!! I used to sneak a spoonful of Gee's Linctus from the cupboard when mum wasn't watching cos I loved it so much - did this quite often, cold symptoms or not. Oh well, it probably explains a lot grin

Lazigirl Tue 02-Jan-18 16:13:07

We used to find Gee's linctus was magic for stopping tickly coughs newnanny but that is because it contained tincture of opium! I think many pharmacies stopped selling it because of drug misuse and was told so by one pharmacist when I tried to buy a couple of years ago, whilst giving me a very funny look. Tried to buy some this year, not to misuse, and it is apparently no longer manufactured. Pity it was really effective grin

newnanny Tue 02-Jan-18 15:52:28

I have hot blackcurrant drinks with paracetamol, Strepsils Extra and an Olbas Oil sniff stick and I have tried several other cough medicines but only Gees gets rid of my cough.

Washerwoman Tue 02-Jan-18 15:41:38

Well I had to return to work today despite still feeling rubbish.Self employed and can't afford not to, and outside so not coming into close contact with others, and thankfully this week much quieter.Finished early feeling shattered, and called in at Home Bargains for more Sudafed and cough medicine and the shelves were nearly empty of all the cold remedies ,paracetamol etc.And the lady in front was stocking up like me.There's so much illness around.

newnanny Tue 02-Jan-18 15:40:22

I am almost out of Gee's Linctus. I have tried to get some online as no chemist sells it in our town, but all say either out of stock or else when you click it into basket won't allow you to pay for it. Does anyone know where i can buy a bottleof this as it is the only thing that stops the cough allowing me to lye down otherwise i can't stop coughing and have to sit up all night?

SueDonim Tue 02-Jan-18 15:30:21

I just stuck my nose into a jar of Vicks - nothing! I can't smell anything at all, while poor dh's eyes are watering. grin
