Hypnotism - does it work?

I would be very interested to hear if any one has been cured of a problem with the help of hypnotism. I am hoping that maybe it would help with my fear of driving??
Also how did they find the hypnotist that helped them??

I have used a hypnotherapist to help me declutter. We agreed what I wanted to do, She made me a tape/mp3 which I have on my ipondtouch, and I have reached many of the goals. I keep it in my hand bag and listen to it whenever I have time to spare.

It definitely did for my friend who was going to Machu Picchu but was frightened of heights. She was totally cured of the fear. With this in mind, I told my DD who was trying to give up smoking, using nicotine patches, etc. After a long chat on the phone, she arranged an appointment. She told the hypnotist that she was sceptical but was told the only criteria was that she wanted to give up. Being assured she did, the hypnotist completed the procedure and told my DD that if it didn't work she could come again for free but that she had never had anybody who had to return. True to her word my DD has never smoked since and that was 3 years ago.

It worked for me (smoking). I can only describe it as the most amazing incredible relaxing treatment and when the hypnotist counted me back down to the real world, I was totally euphoric. My eyes watered bucketfuls during the session which apparently means I was totally 'gone'. It's very strange. I remember the entire session, for example hearing a 'phone ring somewhere in the surgery, and yet I also felt asleep yet in control. I didn't want to 'wake' as it was sooooo lovely. My GP recommended the hypnotist who also gave me a tape to play each day. You have to believe in it for it to work .....

Ps a friend used hypnotism to stop her eating chocolate and yes it worked. She wouldn't now even eat a slice of cake it had a few chocky sprinkles on top. I find it a fascinating subject ....,

Years ago my GP used hypnosis to bring my very high b/p down it did worked . I had a few sessions of hypnotherapy during chemo she also taught me how to be able to reduce my stress levels at home again with success I was always aware of things around me but I found it very relaxing . Hi Hollie my friend just tells optician she doesn't want test .

Mine went well I was driving an hearse on a motorway to a funeral with three limousines behind me on our way to collect the mourners. When we came across a very serious accident. I have seen many distressing things in my job but I kept having flashbacks of the what I had seen at the accident and I was not sleeping. My doctor referred me to an hypnosis clinic I only went the once and it has helped me very much over the years. I was given a tape recording of the session if I wanted to listen to it again. I still have the tape but I have never needed it. I would highly recommend it. Hi

Tried 3 times to help stop smoking, never worked for me,
I did give up in the end through tablets,

Hillie, if it's the test where they 'fire' air at your eyes that worries you, you could find an optician, as I have, that has replaced that test with a new one that is non invasive. Just last week, my DD was telling me how much she disliked it,,and she was surprised to discover that there is now a different one. Obviously, not all opticians have it yet. Check around to find one that does.

I have had two hypnotists try to 'put me under' but it didn't work. A good friend is a qualified hypnotherapist snd she says that using hypnosis to lose weight rarely works because there so many different reasons that could be in the mind which could be causing the overeating or the inability to stick to a diet.

Wish it worked for me, but several tries with different practitioners have failed. I really wanted it to as well.

A friend of my daughter’s insisted that her husband watched ‘One Born Every Minute’ when it was first aired. She had 6 children, all born together with, and under the influence of hypnosis. She needed her husband to see how the majority of women gave birth and he’s still in shock!,

I did pay a great deal of money to see a hypnotherapist listed on the website someone shared and it was a waste of time, she was offhand, intimidating and unhelpful.

Quietdragon I had the same experience as you with a hypnotherapist before I found someone who was excellent. As with so many of the alternative therapies, you never quite know whether people are good at what they are doing and I suspect often, it's about whether you connect with the therapist.

I was almost enraged by the one I saw who was into 'positive thinking'. Nothing wrong with that but she was unempathetic, not wanting to listen and railroading about her technique. I resented every penny I paid her and considered reporting her to someone but it's a buyer beware situation I think.

A lot of these therapists have bought into something called the 'rewind technique', I think this can work if you're good at visualisation and if the therapist is able but not all are!!

Oh dear - when I started this thread I chose to omit that I had already had two tries with two different hypnotists. The first got me talking for so long, when she started to hypnotise me, and I felt that it was working, she suddenly said that the time was up and I was suddenly outside! This upset me greatly and I never returned.
The second was in the women's house, and I went 3 times, but never felt that anything happened at all so I gave up.
Now having read all these posts I don't know if I should try again? Like other posters have said I wanted so much for it to work and it's such a let down when it doesn't.

That sounds awful danni.
You should definitely ‘feel something’.
In your position I would google ‘medical hypnotherapists’ local to me, ring them up and try to get a feel of whether I would feel rapport with them. That’s important in any clinical relationship

That’s vety good advice jane there are people out there who have completed some basic course, and really you are better off in the hands of a professional like a doctor or dentist who has some medical training.

Well as said further up mine was a GP who specialised in hypnotism so certainly not an untrained charlatan and like Danni I felt nothing, went nowhere and felt totally unhypnotised by the sessions He did try at least three sessions and a nice GP but nothing at all happened

I think hypnosis works well for so.me people not all. Just a word of warning please check out the person you are going to see is properly qualified and belongs to a recognised professional body. Anyone can set themselves up as a therapist or hypnotist , make sure they are reputable, if they are they will have no objection to proving their training etc.

I had smoked 20 a day for many years. Tried to stop but couldn’t. One day, in a bookshop, I saw a book on self hypnosis with a CD. Went home and read the book over a few hours that afternoon whilst smoking several cigarettes! Then settled down to listen to the recording. It was very relaxing and I remember clearly the jist of the session, which was not that I was giving up smoking ......but that I was a non smoker!
I have never touched a cigarette since and truly never notice them at all even if someone else is smoking....it is like they disappeared from the universe!

I went to a lovely hypnotherapist. For overeating.
She talked to me.. I closed my eyes and she spoke to me,I can't remember what she said.
I drovehome happily but felt it hadn't worked.when I met my mates in a pub for lunch,I had planned to have a steak and kidney pud but instead surprised myself by ordering a prawn salad.
When I got home,I opened my fridge and although there was tasty items in there, all I saw was cucumber.
Weird, but worked for me.i should have booked another treatment as it wore off after 6 weeks.
I shall go again and rebook after 6 weeks.
