Talking of smoking around babies/children, my friend brought her new granddaughter around to my house, baby was about a month old. I happened to walk past the pram and was horrified at the smell of smoke on it. It reeked. The mum/dad both smoked as do my friend and her hubby.

Thinking of you today farview
I found when the urge was unbearable I'd put my coat on and walk for miles.
Also it helps to change your routine, if possible, so you're not reaching for a cigarette at certain times.
I still vape occasionally but as there's no tar or carbon dioxide I don't feel too guilty.
In fact when asked if I smoked at my last "well woman" check up and I admitted vaping, I was told they didn't consider it a risk. As did my dentist.
Good luck.

As previous mentioned, I stopped March 2016.

The first vapes I tried were tobacco ones. yuk! On the recommendation of a friend I tried cherry, which was surprisingly better than the tobacco ones.

Currently using Columbian coffee, gradually cutting down the nicotine content in the liquid.

Sadly, I gave up too late, was diagnosed with COPD last year, will be on 3 different inhalers a day for ever sad

BTW I am 59

I persevered and tried different brands of tobacco flavoured e juice until I found one which was the closest to a cigarette. Menthol is also supposed to be quite a good way of getting the 'throat hit'.
Realise this must sound ridiculous to non smokers. blush

wot Wed 14-Feb-18 16:05:58

I agree about the menthol flavour!

I took up knitting again to keep my hands busy and to take my mind off cigarettes. It did help by distracting me and making me think of something else.
Every little helps. And think of the money you will save!

I smoked for 20 years. Gave up in 1979 but still have the occasional urge every so often especially after a good meal. Keep trying - one day at a time. I gradually reduced the places I could smoke and ended up only being able to have a cigarette if I sat on the closed loo seat and blew the smoke out of the bathroom window! Too much hassle.

I am another one who finally stopped by vaping. For some reason I found it much easier to give up vaping than give up smoking.

farmgran Thu 15-Feb-18 07:26:09

So difficult, I had countless attempts at stopping but what finally stopped me was the price going up. I saw some nice earings that were $20 but thought them too expensive and then I realised that that was how much I was puffing away in smoke every week! By then I had cut them down to 3 a day.

After 30yrs of 20 a day , gave up with help of tablets from GP. So sorry can't remember the name , they were in a packet where days , and am and pm were set out. Genius, stopped at once and have never looked back!!

farview Thu 15-Feb-18 21:10:43

Ohhhh not doing very well..going to go with trying vapi ng. Bit deflated.. disappointed!!!

phoenix Thu 15-Feb-18 21:40:57

The thing with vaping as opposed to patches, gum (bleurgh) the spray mist etc is it ticks the boxes for the oral, hands and nicotine aspects of smoking.

Farview I get all my vape stuff on line, but if you have a vape shop in your town, pop in and have a chat with the staff, they are usually very happy to help a potential convert!

farview Thu 15-Feb-18 21:50:23

Thanks pheonix yes ..think vapings the way to go...starter kit on order!! OMG this is hard!!!

phoenix Thu 15-Feb-18 22:15:44

No it's not! It's a great adventure! All those different flavours of e liquid to try!

wot Thu 15-Feb-18 23:37:47

Nana58, those tablets are Champix which are what helped me stop. Also, vaping good if you get one that doesn't make you cough.

Yorkshiregirl Fri 16-Feb-18 12:04:49

It will be the best thing you can ever do for yourself. Go for it girl xx

farview Fri 16-Feb-18 19:28:30

Well vape starter kit not arrived yet..went all day but felt horrendous so gave in,can't do cold turkey...will try again tomorrow!! Disappointed with myself....

wot Fri 16-Feb-18 19:52:55

Keep on keeping on!! Horrendous cravings, I know. Try various vaping things and get Champix from your doctor. If I've done it you can.

farview Fri 16-Feb-18 19:56:47

Hi*wot*doc won't give me that as I react to so many medications! Will use willpower again with the vape when it arrives!

My daughter stopped smoking with the Allen Carr book, i tried it but didnt work for me,
I have tried everything from Hypnosis ,to patches,to lozenges, and sprays
I finally tried Cha,pix, no side effects, and i still have 2 packs left, stopped 3 years ago
You can smoke for the first 2 weeks on the tablets, then choose a day to stop, i chose a bank holiday when i knew i couldnt get any,all shops near me were shut, i never smoked after that, and opened a second bank account, saved a lot of money, even though i only usually smoked 10 a day,i have saved a lot, which also gives you more incentive to see the money you saved mounting up

wot Fri 16-Feb-18 20:15:13

Fairview, I was under the impression that p couldn't have Champix if I took anti depressants but apparently that's not so.

ajanela Fri 16-Feb-18 21:56:03

The good news is that every time you try you are nearer stopping. Take what you learnt and use it at your next attempt.

Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs and it takes 3 weeks to get over the craving for nicotine, So set 3 weeks as your target and the 2nd and 3 rd week are the hardest. But if your journey have got to 14 days, don't waste the good work hold on in there for another week.

Once a smoker you will always have vulnerable times when you have given up. Remember packets come in 20's so when you just want 1 you get 20.

Everyone has different ways and you have to find the one that works for you.

Eat lots of fruit and veg, or make fruit and veg smoothies. Great for detoxing,

GrandmaMoira Sat 17-Feb-18 17:30:23

Farview - I used chewing gum (ordinary type not Nicorette) for the first few months. The first few days would have been impossible without. Initially I also went for walks as could not sit still. I ate more than usual and had a couple of glasses of wine in the evening. Keeping busy and indulging yourself just takes the edge off it.
The first week or so is the worst. After that, don't start again or you'll have to go through that stage again.

Another shout for Allen Carr,s book. I had smoked for 25 years, given up innumerable times, but somehow this just ‘clicked’ for me and I have never wanted to smoke again, no cravings, no bad temper, nothing. I guess it’s about finding what works for you. Good luck.
