For trapped wind ... A cup of peppermint tea and I can guarantee you will be trumping like a trooper within 20 minutes.

Alexa Tue 09-Oct-18 19:41:41

No I think it was called chalk and opium. Probably had a pharmaceutical name too.

It was called kaolin and opium where I was nursing. It's good for drying up diarrhoea, if that is really necessary.

1974cookie, Mintec is a brand name for peppermint oil in a capsule, which may help you.

I think you can buy kaolin mixture without the morphine. I'd be wary of trying to take a morphine mixture abroad, in case it's illegal. There's a distinctive smell that makes it easy to detect. There are also kaolin tablets, called something like Diarrhoea Relief, which are less severe in action than Imodium etc. Rehydration mixes such as Dioralyte don't stop the diarrhoea but help to replace the fluids lost and make you feel better. You can make up your own mix, or buy a sports drink or a Coke, which will do much the same job.

Add a bit of bicarbonate of soda and it works even better!
Tastes awful though.

Hot water works well with trapped wind simple but effective 1974

I remember selling this many years ago when i worked in a local chemist shop.

It was pale pink for children and beige colour for adults.
We sold gallons of the stuff especially when there was an outbreak of S&D at the local school.

I can still remember the smell and the taste of the stuff, i hated it!!

Talking of upset tummies, I wish that I could buy Peppermint Water. It is no longer stocked by the Pharmacists that I have tried. It is the only thing that actually works for trapped wind which is so painful. ( Oh the joys of working intermittent night duties. ) ??
The so called wind ease type tablets just do not work for me.
Any ideas Gransnetters are so very welcome.

It was certainly available about 20 years ago, when I last bought it, very effective for an upset tum.

Arrowroot is brilliant for upset tummies mix it with a little water and spoon it (not as nice as wine but manageable)

I'm wondering if you can get a kaolin mixture without the morphine? I did try tracking it down a while ago, but without success. Sometimes, you just need the calming effect of the kaolin without the pain relief.

Milk of Magnesia was the one in our medicine cupboard when I was a child; it came in a blue bottle.
I can still remember that chalky taste (ugh)

trisher Sun 07-Oct-18 10:51:28

I remember both of these. Collis Brown tasted better!

Blinko Sun 07-Oct-18 09:54:05

I wouldn't try to take it to Egypt, given what happened to that woman who tried taking tramadol in.

Jalima1108 Sun 07-Oct-18 09:50:24

I was tempted to provide a link but thought better of it.
However, I do keep humming the theme tune grin

mumofmadboys Sun 07-Oct-18 08:33:03

I am not sure you will be able to take it abroad without a letter from your doctor because of the morphine.

Auntieflo Sun 07-Oct-18 08:20:28

I also used to keep a bottle, on standby, then when I wanted to replace it, I had to sign when the chemist handed it over. This was a long time ago, and I was interested on reading the postings, that it is still available .

Willow500 Sun 07-Oct-18 07:26:08

I didn't know you could still get this. My MiL always had a bottle and would dose me up when I felt sick (which I often did back then) she also gave it to my children. Subsequently I used to keep a bottle in the cupboard. It was good stuff.

If you are travelling abroad it might be an idea to take the medicine in the original packaging, just in case you are stopped. I wouldn’t try to take it through Dubai airport.

Squiffy Sat 06-Oct-18 23:08:26

I order mine from Chemist Direct. You can only buy one bottle at a time because of the morphine content.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 06-Oct-18 22:01:09

I remember buying this 4 years ago (morning after AC 21st) pink gluppy and in a triangular shaped bottle, in local Lloyds pharmacy.

Chewbacca Sat 06-Oct-18 21:16:08

Do you mean morphine or has it changed into something else?
That cracked me up! grin

Patsy70 Sat 06-Oct-18 21:06:52

I remember Kaolin and Morphine and Collis Brown tincture - both very effective for upset tummies and a must in the medicine cabinet.

1974cookie Sat 06-Oct-18 20:44:35

I remember my Mum giving me, and indeed my Siblings Kaolin and Morphine when we had tummy upsets, and it worked. It certainly calmed the painful spasms, as indeed it would have, due to the morphine. There was also another product that was equally as good that came in a small bottle which I think was called 'Collis Brown tincture'. You added a certain amount of drops to a small glass of hot water.
I believe that this was withdrawn after many years because that too contained Morphine, but again, it worked.
Years ago, I saw a young man go into a Chemist and ask for Kaolin and Morphine. The Chemist who served him shook the bottle hard to mix the contents as they separated after standing a while. When I asked why he did this, he explained that drug addicts liked to drink the Morphine which floated to the top, therefore it would not be possible to drink it until the contents had settled again, which would take quite a while.
