Methotrexate

Methotrexate is a form of chemotherapy.

I don’t wish to be alarmist but I think you should ask your GP for a referral to a blood specialist.

It can cause blood disorders whic do not show up in the monthly test.

I speak from experience.

I got along fine with it for a number of months, but then the monthly blood test showed I’d no immunity at all, so was admitted for 6 days to have infusions of Folinic acid until I had an immune system again! I seem to remember the nurse specialist asking if I had any mouth ulcers.

I still have signs of inflammation, so just waiting to see where we go from here.

My DH has one dose of methotrexate and folic acid weekly alongside a new biologic he's been fortunate to have been prescribed for his RA, early days but he is already getting some relief in his small joints.

Ah now its Lupus that causes mouth ulcers - not sure about methotrexate I had Azothiaprine for my lupus which put me into remission after lowering my neutrophils to a dangerous level. Once it was stopped they cam back up. the consultant range me one day and said dont go out or have visitors and stop taking your meds. I hope you are ok mamamags.

Isn’t lupus another autoimmune disease? I think I’ve had the full set!

Azathioprine and my kidneys didn’t get on, and I hated the Prednisolone, so I don’t know where we’ll go from here.

My daughter is prescribed this for RA. However, she does suffer from immune problems. One of these is mouth ulcers and boils. As soon as she is under the weather she gets this type of reaction. She still takes the methotrexate as the RA is more painful than the side effects. She lives in NZ and accepts this is one of the side effects of taking this cancer drug. My sympathies are with you and hope the ulcers clear up soon.

I spent five nights in hospital last year.
I was placed in isolation all the time I was there. My immune system was low and my body was struggling to fight off the infection I had. I thought that my GP would take me off this medication after all of this but I am still taking it. I am not sure what the alternative would be. IT really does relieve the RA symptoms
