Anyone else got the lurgy?

Just out of the steamy bathroom trying to breathe. Head banging like a drum and I have to drive back from Scotland homewards in a few hours. Hoping for a better night. Last night was spent resting my head on the window bottom in the cold trying to get the mucosa to shrink.

CH in the bath coughing in Olympic proportions. Minor inconvenience knowing what a lot of gransnetters' are suffering with but I (rather selfishly) do not want my MRI cancelled again this week.

DD1 and family in Aylesbury had it at Christmas and it seems to have returned with a vengeance before they’d really recovered. I don’t know anyone around here with it, so perhaps its a regional thing?

It does last unfortunately as it's only this week I've been " dizzy-free " after a heavy head cold since Christmas. It's a treat to walk straight !

Oh heck..could last 5/6 weeks...it's a strange one..I keep having a few hours here&there where I feel ok and thinking phew that's it...i.e today....but cough back with a vengeance and also feel like have been punched in the kidneys... really uncomfortable....gums bleeding also...lips sore...oh what a whinge... doctors appointment I think...

Went to see doc last Thursday. He told me he has had it and he is still coughing. We commiserated with each other. He said last years virus lasted about 3/4 weeks and this one is laasting 5/6 weeks! I'm on week 4...
Get well soon everyone x

I started with a tight chest and feeling unwell just after Christmas, spoke to surgery advised honey and lemon! Following week had a bacterial infection on the lungs, 2 lots of antibiotics and counting. Just like everyone else, sneezing, coughing, no energy and feeling as though I have been kicked in the ribs. I shall be glad when all this has passed, I really will.

I had the flu jab in November.

I think I may have the lurgy.
A cold, but with lots of extras.
Have almost been sick a few times, my chest is wheezing and tight, and my head a joints are aching.

I started with this bug during last night, coughing and sneezing and scratchy throat.
"Bit fed up and want to feel well enough to get up and out."
Same here silverlining.
I'll have to be patient, by the sound of it.

I have been in bed since Saturday, hardly eaten so 3 lbs lighter. A silver lining...
Have been sick a coulple of times, i have pain, it’s not a bug. Bit fed up and want to feel well enough to get up and out.
Greetings to all those that are poorly.

Another one here, it is a strange source of comfort to know you're not the only one. DH never catches anything but I've had a cough and a sore throat since before Christmas and if I think it's going and do something active, the next day I'm laid out again. I've only got a mildly runny nose and I never get temperatures (low core temperature, currently 35.8!) but my chest is painful and throat sore and I feel fatigued.

Could this be a series of infections or seriously just one that is hard to get rid of. Most people seem to have had this one for weeks.

Hi Thorntrees, thankyou for your reply. It's interesting to know somebody else out there has experienced this. You understand how painful it is! Thanks for the tips.
I'm just about to open a bag of bitter lemons and then the massage!
Thanks again and thanks for your sympathy.

I have stayed clear of shopping centres (and saved money) and I have not lingered in supermarkets. I have had the odd coughing fit or sneezing bout but I think I am allergic to dust!

It sounds horrendous.

OH & I both went down with this thing (heavy cold? Flu?) on 2 January. Spent most of last week in bed, totally exhausted and lacking all energy for anything. Both got diarrhoea, no appetite, streaming noses, sore throat, headache, etc, etc. He's well on the mend now, except for the hacking cough. I'm still feeling completely wiped out, the slightest thing is an effort. Appetite is returning but I still have the streaming nose and catarrhal cough. How much snot can one woman produce in a day??? I may have to venture out later for some more Tenaladies...

Oh, and we both had the flu vacc in September.

Hi Barberdice, I suffered this some time ago and as you rightly say it was incredibly painful I had no idea what it was so went to my GP who diagnosed a stone in the salivary gland. He said gentle massage might help the stone to move and also sucking bitter lemon sweets. It seems the acid in the sweets encourage saliva which helps flush the stone out of the gland. He did also give me a short course of antibiotics as occasionally the blockage can cause an infection. Hope it clears up soon, you have all my sympathy.

Riverwalk, yes I did have the flu jab. Doesn't seem to make any difference. Had the jab in previous years and still come down with a purler of a cold. Grrr…..

Barberdice Sun 13-Jan-19 22:56:10

I had the lurgy at Christmas. Started to recover and then at new year I found myself suffering with a stone in my salivary gland (very painful). Went to A&E and they said it was swollen gland due to having had heavy cold, cough etc. I went home and remembered I'd suffered the same thing several years ago and at the time was diagnosed with salivary gland stone. Whilst waiting some weeks for scan it eventually disappeared. Anyway this weekend the one I had at new year has flared up again. In bed at moment with hot water bottle on my neck.
Has anybody else ever suffered with these and what remedies did you use?

Another one still battling with bug/virus for third time since October. The banging headache is the worst part. Really fed up now!

Does anyone else feel as though their nerves are on edge all the time?

farview Sun 13-Jan-19 22:23:58

EllanVannin..
I actually think that I agree with you...this has been my 3rd flu jab 2018...and within weeks have actually been really poorly... decision made am not having it again....I've always reacted badly to all sorts of medication..I have had flu once and it is horrendous...but the coincidence now of having flu jab three times and ending up feeling really ill...think NO..will see what happens next year without it...I know that people will shout me down but I have a weakened immune system and I do feel the flu jab is bad for me..

EllanVannin Sun 13-Jan-19 14:30:10

I wonder how many of those poor souls who died had their 'flu-jab ? Scary.

EllanVannin Sun 13-Jan-19 14:28:14

I too had the 'flu jab and this was the second Christmas that I was ill ! It does make you think, though it's never happened before. I'm fine through the year, cold-free until the winter after my jab ?
Makes me wonder if I should give it a miss this year just to see what happens.

I still get the dizzy/unbalanced sensation ?

Jessity Sun 13-Jan-19 14:20:59

Lingering for me too, totally fed up with the dratted bug. I had the flu jab but this was different, heavy cold, hacking cough and this never ending zero energy

farview Sun 13-Jan-19 12:14:49

Oh no...it's a real lingerer then ?

Blinko Sun 13-Jan-19 11:52:20

Had the lurgy before Christmas (upthread), then three weeks of catarrh, then last week sickness and diahorrhea (sp?) and now the lurgy is back. Great!

Izabella Sun 13-Jan-19 11:44:07

Still lingering here ...............

farview Sun 13-Jan-19 11:41:21

Thanks BBbevan so maybe it's just part for the course with this particular lurgy...hope your cough soon disappears..
