Am due to start taking this for my psoriatic Arthritis, am very scared of the terrible list of side effects, and daunted by the whole monitoring regime. Is there anyone out there who is also taking this?

The more common side effects of methotrexate can include:
nausea or vomiting.
stomach pain or upset.
diarrhoea.
hair loss.
tiredness.
dizziness.
chills.
headache.

My dad was on this drug for Rheumatoid arthritis. The benefits far outweighed the side-effects. There are side-effects with every type of drug. Which is more bearable - possible (not guaranteed) side-effects, or not taking the drug and being in pain?

My friend's husband takes this drug for RA. I have not heard him talk of side effects. He is very positive about it.

My brother in law takes this for his rheumatoid arthritis. He does not suffer any side effects, and is monitored at his RA clinic. It is a very effective drug, so try not to worry.

Have you seen this discussion, Nana?

I can't have it due to other conditions, but my former boss, a headteacher, was on it, with no side effects. Everyone is different.

Good luck, RA is a horrible condition.

I have a good friend who has been taking Methotrexate for about 10 years and she is fine. She's had no side effects (in fact, I only asked her the other day about this) and is monitored with regular blood tests.

My husband has been on methotrexate (amongst various other drugs) for RA and lupus for a good few years, he thankfully suffers no side effects.

I have been taking Methotrexate for nearly a year for RA. The dose has gradually been increased and is currently at 20mg, taken weekly. I have had a couple of mild side effects, burning mouth and hair loss but these have been eliminated by taking Folic Acid 5mg on each of the 6 non-Methotrexate days instead of the initial one day.
I see the Rheumatology consultant or Nurse Practitioner every 3 months and they have a helpline should I need advice. I find these appointments together with monthly blood tests keep me reassured that I am suffering no hidden damage.

I have heard that some patients consider Methotrexate the drug from hell whilst other have no problems. I hope things turn out well for you.

My friend with lupus and another very rare auto-immune disorder was on this and she had no problem with it - it made her better!

Been on methotrexate for 17 years and it’s my wonder drug
Just make sure your bloods are done when required and you’ll be fine
