My feet feel as though I’ve been pounding the pavements all night.

I’m 72 and used to being active but recently I find I’m waking up with feet that feel as though I’ve been pounding the streets all night and I’m avoiding walking any further than I have to. I have orthotics and wear very sensible lace up shoes but they no longer help. Anyone had experience of this? Anyone found anything that helps? I’m finding it very depressing.

If its something different do get it checked out. There are some conditions that cause foot pain that need investigating.

Planta fasciitis is really painful though usually on only one foot. Maybe a podiatrist or trip to the gp might be an idea.

Plantar Faciitis is usually on the heel of the foot and CAN occur in both feet (I had it in both feet once, it was terrible)but you really need to see a doctor.

Have you been checked for diabetes?. This often manifests in foot problems

Have you got swollen feet? When my feet are painful in the morning I find that they are both swollen, mine tend to go down as I move but goes with my heart problem.

Often this kind of problem is due to reduced blood circulation in old age. When you're upright and moving around you don't notice it, but it builds up overnight.
My husband has it, and sticks his feet out from the covers which helps.
I've got arthritis in my feet (and corns) and have a similar problem.

Could it be gout?

Thank you for your advice ladies. I’ve made an appointment with a podiatrist to check things out. I think Fennel has put her finger on it and it’s probably poor circulation as I’ve always had problems. I have corns, bunions and arthritis too but mostly I can cope with them, this new set of problems has just been the final straw.

There are some nice gentle exercises you can do that help with suppleness and circulation. One is using a soft ball under your foot and rolling it around. I've also found that wearing decent quality memory foam bases trainers (Sketchers) in the house rather than slippers gives much better support and sureness of footing.
