I am type 1 diabetic(on insulin only recently)but I have noticed my finger nails are peeling there top layer and are slightly discoloured(pink almost red)is this normal?
Replying to our other lady,if I get hungry I was told to try toasted almonds.if you like cheese instead of crisps I have quavers,only as a treat though.this my first chat so forgive if I have rambled.
I would recommend you to try Intermittent Fasting, I mean not to lose weight. But to reduce fat which is developed near your liver and pancreas. Well my husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 2 years ago. Straight away he started the low carb high fat diet as recommended by diabetes UK. He has a small bowl of granola for breakfast with full fat milk, fish for lunch ( he likes tuna or mackerel), then an evening meal of some sort of meat with lots of veg. He eats,curry, chilli con carne, various types of kebabs, chicken with various sauces, but no rice, pasta, bread etc. He has lost a ton of weight and reversed the condition. His blood sugars are in the normal range. He tested them several times in the beginning but less often now. He does put sauces on his meals if they don't have their own sauce as quite frankly he wasn't a big veg water prior to having been diagnosed. I don't know what sort of veg you like or if you like any sort of sauces but adding garlic does help , also other herbs or spices. Perhaps do a stir fry with the veg with a Thai/ Chinese style sauce , watching out for additional sugar of course? If he has hunger pangs between meals he has a good slice of cheese or cold meat which seems to work.

Almonds are great as a snack. Just a small handful will do.
I have reversed my diabetes by eating low carb and I am rarely hungry. Lost 2 and a half stone, my bs dropped to 5.4 and I have managed to keep the weight off for 4 years. I treat myself to 1 cake on a Friday and Ireally look forward to it.

Last year at my annual check up as I'm on bp medication, I was told I was borderline diabetic. Shortly after I had a battery of hospital blood test for bp issues, do you think they would have done another glucose one? The GP hasn't mentioned the prediabetes again so not sure whether I should request a test. I'm not overweight but struggling to keep it that way, I've already eliminated most sugars and trying to cut back on carbs.
My D H was told to avoid rice and rice cakes. Oats and oat cakes are much better if you are Type 2 diabetic and they are cholesterol lowering as well.
Strange Kazzi but I hardly ever feel hungry I am on
insulin now through no fault of my own . I cannot say I have changed tastes at all .
If you cook your veg with garlic then it makes the veg taste sweeter. Might be worth a try.
Hi thanks for the replies. I was told I needed to lose half a stone but have lost a stone. Not complaining but don't want to lose any more! I do eat bread, take sandwich to work. Tried rice cakes, ryvita but just doesn't fill me up. My downfall are biscuits, l don't eat cake but when I'm really hungry I grab a biscuit. Tried not having them in the cupboard but my husband and grandchildren eat them. I'm not a great lover of salad either so hard to keep off things I shouldn't eat.
I wonder if any of you could help me with this problem? A few months ago I was diagnosed as being pre diabetic. I have put on a lot of weight in the last year and know the answer is to lose weight. However, for the last month or so I have been having terrible trouble with my legs, and to some extent my arms at night. It is a sort of burning, tingling twitching discomfort with occasional pains in the legs.
I was wondering if any of you have this? If so do you take any medication to help you get a good night's sleep?
I've been type 2 for over 10 years and the only change I have noticed is an increased desire for sweet things, particularly chocolate !?. Never been particularly fond of veg, but I eat them anyway - prefer salads in the summer. Still only on metformin so far, though currently waiting for latest blood test results. Not overweight but struggle to keep it that way. Try to minimise all carbs but sometimes weaken !
DH is on Jardiance and other meds he has gone from a 38" waist to 34" over about 12 mths. I asked my GP if I could be put on it. He said it's not usually advised for women but try it. I did for 7 days and had to stop. It gave me major stomach problems.
It is not prescribed as a weight loss drug, it is a diabetic drug that has weight loss as a lucky side affect.
DH and I are both T2.
To answer the OP question, yes, my taste buds have changed.

Well, I've never heard of the med Jardiance. I am on two different meds but unlike the majority of T2 diabetics, I have to be careful what meds I take as they have to work through the liver and not the kidneys as I have a renal transplant.
As to what to eat when you are hungry, my diabetic nurse said rice cakes - lovely chocolate mini rice cakes are my choice as the savoury ones are just to savoury for me as I have stomach ulcers which can flare up if I'm not careful. She also said eggs, or nuts....nothing fills me up, this though, is due to meds I take for the transplant which increase appetite. Rock and hard place come to mind here!! I sometimes make up a small bowl of chopped salad with a little cheese, very little. Or cubed cheese with a small chopped skinned apple and a couple of walnuts
I have to admit to not following a diet even though I need to lose another half stone, and I eat what I want but within moderation. I have reduced sugar, never had it in drinks and so on, so no cake except on special occasions. My downfall is crisps.... cheese... so again, it's in moderation. And I haven't noticed the change in taste of veggies, thankfully.
Why are you trying to lose weight if you're not overweight?
Hi. I've been type 2 diabetic for several years. Has anyone else noticed a change in their taste buds when on medication? I used to love vegetables but now struggle to eat them as I cant stand the taste. Started with broccoli then carrots and now almost any veg. Was fine before my diabetic meds. When I've told the nurse she looks at me as if I'm mad! I also find it hard to know what to eat between meals when I'm hungry. I eat fruit but that doesn't fill me up. Any suggestions? I started taking Jardiance a year ago which the nurse said would help me lose weight (I'm not overweight) and it has definitely made my appetite a lot smaller.
