Any and all advice regarding the use of probiotics would be greatly appreciated. Following a recent surgical procedure my husband was required to take high doses of an antibiotic. This has resulted in severe diarrhea lasting for many days.Probiotucs have been suggested. Any grans out there have knowledge of these and did they actually help the situation?

PS:

If you cannot, for any reason take acidophilus bifidus as yoghurt or capsules, a reasonable alternative is oats.
This can be in any form: oatcakes, porridge; muesli; flapjacks; stirred into soup or stew (blend it fine) or baked into something.

When my son was in the army they did jungle warfare training and he took oats in his pack. He was the only one in his battalion not to get gyppy tummy.

The Clever Guts diet by Dr Michael Moseley is a great read on this subject .

Alflorex probiotic capsules have put my chaotic stomach in calm order - I wouldn’t be without them now.

After ruining my gut with being constantly prescribed antibiotics for ear infections , 2 yrs solid was the longest non stop course, I developed IBS as the villi in the stomach, which are little fingers which absorb the food had perished. I had constant diarrhea whenever I ate. I spent time researching and found that probiotics can repair that damage and FIX the gut. I looked into the little yogurt drinks etc and kefir but found Bioglan sell a probiotic in capsule form that is the equivalent of drinking about 30 little yogurt drinks probiotics per day. I no longer need to take my IBS tablets (mebeverine) and can finish a meal without running for the loo. It took a couple of months to kick in but now my stomach is healthy again, I take one capsule per day, they are half price in Holland & Barret at the moment, but Tesco and Boots have a Buy two get one free deal with them all the time. I have recommended them to other IBS sufferers after antibiotic damage and it has worked for ALL of us! - Bioglan Biotic Balance Ultimate Flora 30 Capsules

Kefir is wonderful. Missfoodlove above was right, research is now proving that we rely on bacteria for a whole host of benefits, such as breaking down the walls of tough cabbage cells so we can access the nutrients. Evidence is now suggesting that Parkinson's starts in the digestive tract and are linked with bacteria. I drink water kefir, a friend gave me the grains which start it & mine has been going over a year now. I often mix it with milk kefir from a supermarket & its lovely!
Like live yoghurt, it's a mix of yeasts etc. that are healthy but most yoghurts are pasteurised which kills off the bugs. Its much more healthy to keep them in. I feel stronger & more energetic once I've taken some too.

Llamedos13 My late mum was treated numerous times with antibiotics by doctors in South Africa.

She was advised to take probiotics to help boost her gut health/immune system because the antibiotics destroy good bacteria in the gut.

I think she was actually prescribed probiotic tablets in conjunction with her antibiotics, if I remember correctly.

So she took probiotics them every time she was prescribed antibiotics.

Well they are a good excuse to prove. A taster yoghurt at a high price.

Actimel drinks seem to help me when IBS is playing up. I find if I take them regularly I feel a lot more comfortable. I don't know the scientific evidence but I did have a difference in how I felt

Yes my GP recommended it for me. I just take 1 a day and after about 4 days my symptoms stop. Always need this after antibiotics. Just buy from the supermarket fridge.

DH makes Kefir; it's very simple to do this at home, much easier than when we made yogurt. We have some on our daily porridge, and both have happy tums.

Antibiotics do kill off the ‘good’ bacteria as well as the ‘bad’ and probiotics are thought to help replace that. As a homeopath, I don’t usually have conventional medicine but needed some antibiotics recently (the first time in decades) and did take probiotics afterwards for a month or so. I like to think they helped with the stomach pains I had. I bought Optibac make (in capsule form...I don’t think yogurt is sufficient) and they make some to take alongside antibiotics, and others to take afterwards.

Greciangirl Tue 16-Jul-19 13:04:13

I have tried many different probiotics, hoping they would help with tummy problems, but quite honestly, I don’t think they made any difference to the way I felt after completing the packet.
Also, some are very expensive.
Bio yogurt is probably just as good.

BradfordLass72. You mention getting back on the good bugs as soon as your are finished the antibiotics. So should you not combine the two? Some advice we were given was to take both, other people say the opposite,so many different opinions makes for much confusion.

HannahLoisLuke Tue 16-Jul-19 16:42:22

I suffer from IBS. Sometimes constipated sometimes the opposite.

Having tried a few and done a fair bit of research I finally found ProBion and they are really good.
They do various formulations but I use Clinica which was used in a Swedish study into whether they might be helpful in bowel cancer.
Look them up, read the article and I got a free sample at the beginning, a good supply too, just paid postage.

You need to get the ones that survive your stomach acid and these do. Just take them with a cold drink, not hot.
Thoroughly recommend them.

After I had the start of an ulcer, which luckily was caught in time and treated, my G.P recommended probiotics , but in capsule form, as it goes straight to the stomach, whereas yoghurt loses some of its qualities by the time it gets to where it should be (this is what the G.P said). I've taken the capsules for quite a few years....no stomach issues x

I take a Benecol drink each morning. I have IBS and I find it keeps my symptoms at bay. I used to drink Yakult but find the taste of Benecol nicer as it’s like drinking yoghurt.

I had a dreadful upset last year after taking antibiotics ( first time in my long life) and after a week with little helping, I could actually venture out and went to Holland and Barrett and bought Acidophylis Plus and what a difference they made. I hope I never need antibiotics again but I certainly know what to do next time they were so effective

A friend of ours used to work for the Milk Marketing Board. He once told us "Eat the mould on that piece of Cheddar in your fridge, it's exactly the same stuff that they put in those expensive probiotic drinks". Never researched if it's true though, but he seemed very convincing , in his 80s and very healthy?

notanan2 Tue 16-Jul-19 18:34:48

Benecol isnt the same thing

annep1 Tue 16-Jul-19 18:38:27

We have Skyr or Fage every day. I thought this was good. Didn't know about supplements. Must investigate.

annep1 Tue 16-Jul-19 18:39:26

We have it with porridge and blueberries.

HannahLoisLuke Wed 17-Jul-19 07:54:49

Evie64 your friend is right. The blue bits in cheese are fermented and act as food for the good bacteria in your gut. As do bananas, celery, oats, onions, live yogurts, kefir, sautkraut and more.

I take the probiotic fermented turmeric drink, it's helped with my stomach and its also stopped my knees from aching. If you search turmeric vitality its the liquid one they have, a tad spicy with ginger but I like it
