Aunt saying 'it's difficult to remember to drink'

I must admit to not drinking enough, largely because my only loo is upstairs and when my knees are having a bad day, I don't feel like going upstairs every two hours or so. I know..I'm a very bad example. However, yesterday I got several bottles of soda water which I keep in the fridge and make myself a long drink of lime and soda, which I renew quite frequently. Time for a top-up I think - and a quick trip upstairs.

You can get water bottles with times down the side ndicating how much you should drink by whattime of day

Have you heard of hydrating jelly drops?
Check these out, a brilliant concept

That's a good idea giulia.

I have four half litre glasses. I fill all four in the morning and put on kitchen counter (or you could dot them round the house in strategic spots). I drink whenever I see one - sometimes the whole glass - until all four are empty. There's no other way for me and counting smaller glasses is useless: I'd forget where I'd got to. I try to get it over by at least four pm so I won't be up and down all night for the loo. Sometimes I do have to go once.

Could you get an Alexa type thing and programme it to remind her?

We always have a drink with our meal and a cup of tea afterwards. We usually drink fruit juice or water with the meal. That way we get two drinks.
Perhaps your aunt could be persuaded to do that - water with the meal and then a cuppa. But it all comes down to remembering.....

It was a bit of a problem with my mother. I think sometimes they forget and sometimes they don't drink because they are worried about needing the loo. My mum had a water bottle and we also used to leave a flask of tea on the table next to her chair so she could have a drink without having to move (fortunately she didn't take milk). You could suggest that she drinks a glass of water with every meal. You could also provide her with a selection of ice lollies which she might have in this hot weather.

A jug of iced water on a table next to her, like I do then you can't forget.

I've found, over the years of working in the care sector, that many elderly people don't drink anywhere near enough, no matter what the weather. There are sometimes a couple of reasons for that:

Many people of an older generation use a cup and saucer - which don't hold much.

A lot of older people take diuretic medication, so they wee a lot anyway.

An idea is to have a jug of cold cordial next to where your Auntie sits, and/or to have a drink after she's been for a wee.

The timer idea is a good one providing your Aunt remembers what its for. Maybe it could be labelled. I suppose then there is the problem of 're setting it.

Could you suggest she sets her kitchen timer for an hour (or whatever is a reasonable interval), makes a drink when it rings and immediately sets the timer again before drinking it?

Or if the drink "goes through her" in an hour or two, she could make another as soon as she emerges from the bathroom. (A natural timer!)

A flask of cold juice or water, I take one upstairs with me at night time

You could get your aunt a pretty water bottle to keep next to her.
Some have a central 'bit' (can't think of the word!) which can be filled with fruit, or just water, and frozen.

Hi all, my aunt is 82 and I phoned her today to make sure she was OK in this heat. I reminded her to drink lots of water, but she said it's difficult for her to remember. I said to put a jug of water next to the kettle to remind her ... she does drink lots of tea so is getting some fluids. What do other people do to remind themselves?
