Tough Toenails

I have tried tiger barm it is stronger than vicks, it was! working to get rid of fungal but then I got lazy and kept forgetting so its now come back.

Trouble is it stains, but you can now buy a white version instead of the orangey coloured one. beware it is quite powerful and smelly.

I also filed the nail first(throw the file away after and use a new one next time) I sometimes use sandpaper, just cut it up into small pieces. it does take ages.....to start to improve, possibly at least 6 months

If your only problem is that you find it difficult to cut your nails then a beauty therapist should be able to handle it.
Much nicer treatment than you would get at a podiatrist and a bit cheaper.
Note: I did point out I’m only talking about thick toe nails. Not anything else.

I would also recommend finding a good podiatrist. My DH had terrible pain with his toe nails and after visiting a good podiatrist twice in the last four months he is already seeing a great improvement. He goes every 8 weeks and it is only £40 per visit so well worth the expenditure. The podiatrist also told DH he has chilblains which the GP and the practice nurse missed.

I have a tough toenail. The underneath became infected and the podiatrist suggested almond oil which cleared up the infection. I no longer cut my toe nails but file them down with a strong emery board and the health of my toes has improved. I will try the Vick. It sounds worth a try. If it's no good for me, it will be good for the GC's coughs and colds!

I wou9ld definitely go to a podiatrist/chiropodist regularly and give you foot care over to them. Having had surgery on both feet my nails grow in strange directions and have become hardened. I can just imaging the damage I could do to myself let loose with a pair of nails clippers!

DH has very tough toenails, he kept the clippers which were used on dogs toenails when he retired from veterinary practice! They work a treat!

You can get sharp, fine and strong small wire cutters on jewellery making sites - I think amazon does them.

Ooh, I shall have to try the Vicks; one of my big toenails seems to prone to fungal infection. I normally leave it to grow out but it takes ages.

healthy hoof from amazon works. It was originally formed to use on horses then someone realised that it did well at softening adult hard toe nails. It does work, I had a very thick hard nail, my heart was always in my mouth trying to cut it, it was like cutting with secateurs then

Is it toenail fungus? My big toe had this a while ago. After shower, I applied cider vinegar to the affected nail, then rubbed in Vick. Took a long time, but as the nail grew, the fungus went also.
I still have tough nails though, see original post! Think NYR should be to go to a podiatrist!

As well as soaking feet prior to cutting nails, I use CCS cream daily as recommended by my podiatrist.

Hellohell daren't look at mine, one of which is similar to yours, .Plus various other corns, hammer toe problems etc.
Luckily we have a friend who is a podiatrist and does home visits - not too expensive. I must make an appt. in the New Year.

I could you please help don't know what's going on with my 2 big toes the rest are OK it's just big toes

My DH have up trying to cut his toenails. He now visits a chiropodist who has a business just two minutes walk away.
I can still manage mine, but am having difficulty reaching the little toes.

Soaking is the only solution, then a foot moisturiser when dried. A good pair of toenail clippers too. Scholl's clippers and foot products.

I’ve tried Scholl Toenail Softener in the past, it helps a bit.

Dr Mark Porter who has a column in The Times recommended applying Vicks Vapor Rub for toenails affected by fungus. He said it was as effective as more expensive stuff that you paint on. Could possibly help with your tough nails?

I already soak them before cutting them. Might try rubbing tea tree oil on them to see if that will soften them.

You could soak your feet in warm soapy or Tea tree oil infused water before trying to cut them - or, go to a podiatrist.
Ours used to recommend a German foot cream called Gehwoll which was slightly eucalyptus scented (very good against cheesy feet!)
