I am contemplating joining up but can I cope with the sheer mindlessness of it?

Please don't tell me to take up running.....that won't be happening.

Yes, nina, from my mother and brother. Sickening really.

I think for me, right now, the best advice is from happiyogi, eat more of the proper stuff.

Bullied over your size at a 12/14 gfpip shock that's ridiculous.
I'd be happy at that size.

I did WW before I had DD and lost a few stone then got pregnant and put all back. Back to WW a couple of years later and lost a fair bit again until I got pregnant with DS. I've never been back to WW. I did try Slimming World a few years ago but I gave up after only losing 5 lb in 8 wks.
DD is attending SW and has currently lost 2.5 stn.
After the first couple of weeks at WW I didn't stay to club. I just got weighed and left, as did several others, you don't need to be a social animal.

Slow loss is the key I'm told. I intend to try the 5.2 diet but have yet to get my butt into gear. I did cut out having wine every evening (because hubby was starting to drink too much) it was hard because I'd got used to it but now I have a fruit juice in a nice glass with ice & mint. I still have a cocktail or g&t or wine if we eat out but thats not often. At my recent MOT with the practise nurse I was chuffed to be told I'd lost 8 pounds. I used to be slender but some meds & a leg injury have seen me pile on the pounds. It really isn't easy (I've done WW plus excercise classes previously).

I am just so crap at dieting. It is depressing. My thyroid does not work properly either so that does not help. I need to lose a bit before Xmas though but like travelsafar I get stiff and I am in pain when it is damp weather with arthritis in spine so any exercise has to be inside in warm. I am thinking of joining pilates for over 50's.

Babs758 Sat 02-Nov-19 12:40:33

16/8 worked for me plus my fitness pal. 1st stone came off in 8 weeks. Next stone is coming off less easily so I maintain a steady week for 2-3 weeks and then drop another kg. I thought I would miss breakfast but so far so good. Trying to cut down on bread and sugar too. Good luck!

Ps I’m using a book called The Every Other Day Plan by Krista Vardy.

eebeew Sat 02-Nov-19 12:25:13

I’ve just started the alternate day plan. You eat 400 to 500 cals on one day then eat as much as you like on the other. Keep it up until goal is reached. It is very effective and when you get used to it not difficult.
It is very much needed to help defer a second hip replacement.

The programmes shown on BBC 2 last week are interesting for wannabe slimmers. There are genetic reasons in your DNA why some people want more food and more fattening food. It is nice to know we ar not just pigs. I think they were called You are you cal, ling Fat. 2 programmes.

vickya Sat 02-Nov-19 11:55:16

Teabagwoman, on the WW plan you can eat carbs. I do daily. I like a sandwich, 2 slices of Hovis, for lunch. But I could the points and the silling is a thin slice of light cheese and maybe cucumber slices, or just one slice bread and a home made veg soup, with no points in it. I have an ice cream every evening after supper! I have a Skinny Cow one or Fab. Those are low in points. You learn to check and juggle and can have nice things but lose. Then there are Wednesdays, after weigh in smile But not every Weds can be a binge day.

Happiyogi Sat 02-Nov-19 11:54:19

grapefruitpip, my advice would be to eat more! Fill yourself up on plants, especially greens and whole foods like brown rice and not only will you not have room for sugar and processed products, but your palate will change and you'll stop desiring them. As well as weight loss, the health benefits from this way of eating are enormous.

TLVgran48 Sat 02-Nov-19 11:53:07

I did the 5:2 for several months, it worked to an extent but I would reach the end of the 500 calories day feeling a bit miserable. Now on the 16:8, which is so much easier (once you rid your mind of the 'mantra 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day'). Turns out you can function quite well with just lunch and dinner, and the weight loss is steady.

Friends have various ways to lose weight. Some use the 5:2 and some Slimming World and some had surgery to make their stomach smaller. Some, like me, go to Weightwatchers. All of us, who have an online support group too, have lost weight and some of us have kept it off for years. It still goes up and down but at a lower level.

I was up to size 28 in 2000 after moving to a flat next door to Pizahut and a few ddoors away from Fish and chips, Chinese and kebabs. I also had fattening ready meals. I got to my goal weight in 2007 and was size 12/14. I lost 8 stones. I had cancer and didn't want it to come back. It took about 4 years in all. I began at Slimming World, thought I could do it alone, gained some back and went to WW.

I did gain a stone and a half when I didn't go to WW because of operation and moving house but have been at Gold since 2009 now. I never go over. The diet, and that of SW, are sensible eating, lots of veg and fruit and count the points if you want to but can be done without. I just go and weigh in weekly now and only rarely stay for the meeting, but while losing themeetings are vey helpful. Tips and encouragement and comparing stories with others who have similar problems.

I do love eating! I am a pig. I need to plan my intake and had to change my eating patterns. I also go to the gym and swim now and do tai chi. I feel better when i exercise as am very arthritic. I was unable to walk really more than 50 yds at size 28. The thing is you have to keep at it and lose slowly.

Oh you can get referred to WW and go free via your surgery!

I think you have to be prepared to experiment a bit and find what suits you and your way of life. For me, at the moment, it’s a Slimming World Group. The weekly weigh in gives me a target to aim for and stops that “I’ll start again tomorrow” which has been scuppering me recently. My challenge is the times when I’m really tired and craving carbs. I know I can do it, I lost several stone fifteen years ago and have maintained my weight loss until recently when stress and immobility started the upward trend. Best wishes and good luck to all who are working on getting to a healthy weight and staying there.

4allweknow Sat 02-Nov-19 11:15:50

I did Slimming World on line. Just as with all other diets, clubs, lost weight then put it back on. Do still use some of the recipes from SW so that probably helps.

Patticake123 Sat 02-Nov-19 11:11:13

After a poor experience at a slimming club 42 years ago I was vehemently against them but roll on 41 years and a painful hip took me to my GP who offered me a 3 month trial at WW. One year later, I’m two stones lighter, I’ve made some lovely friends and I would highly recommend joining a club. I never lost more than 2 lbs in a week but I’ve dropped 2 dress sizes and feel much healthier for it.

Oldandverygrey Sat 02-Nov-19 10:49:48

I joined SW last year managed to lose 4 stone, have kept to target for three months now, but with Christmas looming up …….who knows!

fluttERBY123 Sat 02-Nov-19 10:45:32

Suggest you try some of the above to see what suits you, everyone is different. Buy the Dukan book as well. It will show how not to put the weight back on once lost, which is the more difficult bit.

Shinamae Sat 02-Nov-19 10:43:43

It’s definitely 16/8 for me as well I find it really easy to adhere to and have had quite a bit of success...?

TillyWhiz Sat 02-Nov-19 10:23:29

I was told I was overweight and prediabetic. On a prediabetic course and was horrified at what happens when there's too much sugar in the blood! Now I don't have cakes or biscuits in the house, use a smaller plate, no pastries, got a Fitbit to encourage me and gradually built up the brisk walking to 10,000 steps a day. I have lost a stone and after 3 months, gone down a size. It can be done but there has to be the incentive.

Lin663 Sat 02-Nov-19 10:14:45

WW works for me - you can choose what to use your points for to suit your own preferences, so no need to feel deprived. I eat a little bit of chocolate every day and have lost a stone since mid September...I don’t do much exercise because of a spinal problem, but I think my progress would have been even better had I been able to get a bit more physical

Quizzer Sat 02-Nov-19 10:08:36

I was a food scientist. Joined a Fat Club in support of a friend and was shocked by the rubbish the agent talked. Most of the nutrional advice was totally incorrect. I think she made it up as she went along. Waste of money!

chelseababy Sat 02-Nov-19 10:08:24

If you have a Fitbit you can add your food and it calculates your over/under "spend" taking your exercise into account

jenni123 Sat 02-Nov-19 10:06:23

The best slimming club I ever went to that WORKED was Rosemary Connolly, mind you that was many years ago but it did work. now I am overweight but don't seem to be able to do a lot about it as I am now disabled and can only walk about 3 or 4 paces, so cannot go for a walk, while I try to keep a check on what I eat (also diabetic) because I can't/don't burn off energy/excess calories. but anyone fit enough to go to Rosemary Connolly classes they DO work. are they still going ???
