I am hoping you have had your dizziness investigated and know what is causing it? If it is labyrinthitis, then it is a case of grin and bear it, and take the drugs if you can tolerate them (I can't, make me feel like a zombie for days after taking just one, but I am unlucky). If it is BPPV, then I would hope you would be offered an Epley manouvre, which can give instant relief.

I have just invested in a pair of cut proof gloves for a friend, for cooking or gardening, am intrigued to know if they work! www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07MJR99TV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?psc=1&tag=gransnetforum-21&ie=UTF8

I wish you better soon, dizziness or vertigo is so utterly horrible, but it doesn't last forever, start planning something enjoyable in your head for a few weeks time? flowers

Leith mentioned the Epley maneovre

Calendargirl I have just googled it and they are back in stock after ages.

So excited (it's only a potato peeler although may not be the same quality as direct from the original manufacturers grin)

Callistemon Wed 06-Nov-19 10:33:16

a large bread knife shock

Callistemon Wed 06-Nov-19 10:32:33

Calendargirl I had a really good potato peeler which I bought when I was overseas but it must have gone out with the peelings.

I can't seem to find another one the same and I think the firm has been taken over anyway now. We've bought other various types but none as good.

I can't peel with a knife. I have a potato peeler and a peeler I use for veg. My mum always said you blunt the potato peeler if you peel anything else with it. I found she was right in that. Accidents are often caused by using blunt tools.

I hope you're ok Namsnanny - be careful next time. As someone suggested...potato peelers

timetogo2016 Tue 05-Nov-19 15:18:05

I can`t get the hang of veg peelers so still use a large bread knife.
Family think ..wt ?.

I have had my potato peeler for years. I dread it breaking as I get very used to a particular one, and don’t like having to get accustomed to a new one.

Re-reading this, I realise it makes me sound very odd! ?

??

I am happy I read your post as I have found 2 possible remedies for my inner ear dizziness problem.
However I have to ask why tour husband isn’t making the soup? If he is well enough to go to the shops he can’t possibly have the flu!
Namsnanny I really hope your dizziness subsides and your cuts heal. Take care and enjoy the soup!

Simple solution in future ... get a good veg peeler. Brilliant for all kinds of veg, including potatoes!

annep1 Tue 05-Nov-19 13:14:04

I find a knife much easier and quicker to use for peeling potatoes. I use a veg peeler for carrots/parsnips. My husband says I cut off too much of the potato. I don't care.

I also suffer with extreme bouts of dizziness. I now use the Epley manoeuvre which relieves my very disruptive dizziness in short order.

Callistemon Tue 05-Nov-19 12:16:58

jenni I was prescribed something similar to Stugeron by the GP when I had dizziness due to ear problems.
They do work Namsnanny

I have burnt my fingers or hand three times recently - due, I think, to lack of concentration.

Take care namsnanny
ps I always use a peeler, can't use a knife to peel

jenni123 Tue 05-Nov-19 12:06:04

I used to have very bad dizzy spells, still get dizzy if I bend forward. Pills doc gave me weren't a lot of good but I found STUGERON, you can buy them over the counter in pharmacy or the doc will prescribe them, they are actually for travel sickness, they really worked for me, I used to take 2 as I opened my eyes in the morning, they are chewable, chalky taste but not too unpleasant , Give them a try

It should have been tomato soup then nobody would have noticed. Hope the thumbs heal soon. I've done it myself in the past.

Teetime Tue 05-Nov-19 09:04:04

When you aren't feeling quite right its easy to have these small accidents. I cut a lump off the top of my finger with the bread knife on Friday- I wasn't feeling great and we had 'people for drinks'- nice people but I needed a nap really. I hope your wounds heal quickly. I would order some on line shopping to include ready made soup.

kircubbin2000 Tue 05-Nov-19 08:45:21

What I find strange is that none of my younger family seem able to peel with a knife. They all use peelers. A lost art.

BradfordLass72 Tue 05-Nov-19 00:35:59

I know the feeling - I've probably cut every finger with sharp knives over the last few years - it just adds a bit of extra iron to the soup!

MiniMoon Mon 04-Nov-19 23:23:59

Eek, vegetable knife!
I use a vegetable peeler/scraper for that job, and then use a knife to slice or chop them up.

I do hope your thumbs soon heal, and that your inner ear trouble subsides quickly.
It's horrible having to sit still.

annep1 Mon 04-Nov-19 21:20:08

Oh dear Namsnanny. I do hope you're ok.
It's hard to do nothing even when you know you should. I hope you've learnt from this!?

SueDonim Mon 04-Nov-19 21:16:14

Oh no! sad Don't forget to remove the elastic bands before gangrene sets in! grin

Namsnanny Mon 04-Nov-19 20:17:17

Due to an inner ear problem that I've already posted about, I'm forced to spend my time just sleeping or sitting around waiting for the dizziness etc to pass.
No knitting or gardening (bending and moving sets it off, but its been too wet anyway), or Christmas crafts.

So, feeling a bit better and thinking I could sit down to do this job I volunteered to peel pots and parsnips to make a curry flavoured parsnip soup.
My son and husband have both gone down with flu and I thought this would be a nice meal for them.

Two potatoes and one parsnip in and I've cut both my thumbs with a new and very sharp veg knife!
Blood everywhere, and I currently have tissue and elastic bands around said thumbs as the first aid box is too high for me to reach on my own, and H is off buying garlic for his soup!

I think the powers are telling me to just bide my time and be bored!! grin
