Went for a check up with the dentist this morning, unfortunately he isn't hopeful for the future of my teeth. Have to say I am a bit gutted. Wondering what views are on dentures, there seem to be many different types so what is good and what is bad and are dentures really grim? Thanks

Hello Sunny82z. I understand just how you feel as I went through similar feelings this time last year, when I lost yet another tooth and so had a gap of three in a row! How I wish I had looked after my teeth more when younger! I now have a partial plate with three teeth, and metal running along the back of rest of teeth, with anchor points on the back teeth and one on a tooth next to the false tooth. The plate fits extremely well, although had to be re-done at first as didn't fit! I find it's not so good at chewing tough things, or even unpeeled apples, but does mean I am not just eating on one side of my mouth.
Do ask your dentist to show you a sample of what they are recommending for you. I had to ask - to see something. Also if you are not happy with the fit, don't put up with it, the dentist can make it better for you.
One bonus - when I first had it, I stopped eating in-between meals !! (but I do now!)
Good luck.

My sister is 74 and had dentures last year after spending thousands on dentists. She was sore for a few weeks, but is fine now. She looks better as well, and she will not get toothache again. She wishes they’d been fitted years ago. I don’t know why folks think keeping teeth is such a big thing. As long as you can chew, who cares?
Good luck

Thank you both for responding. When the dentist said my teeth were on their last legs I wàs too stunned to to ask him how long he thought they may last, I am having a tooth out week after next so hopefully will know more.

I have a partial denture due to being headbutted by my DGS when he was small, he pushed my teeth at the front backwards and they became loose and i was terrified of them falling out so had them removed and a plate made. Could not afford implants at that time. How i wish i hadn't had too, i hate it. I have a constant dry mouth and just hate the feel of it in my mouth. Hopefully if you have a full set it will be different.

Hi,

I have dental implants and when I ask my implant surgeon about a couple of lower teeth that seemed a bit iffy he stated that your own teeth are the best teeth to have and for as long as you can keep them and they are not causing any problems that will always be the best option. It might be worth having your dentures made privately as the quality and fit can differ.

Good luck

Unfortunately due to a medical condition that gives me a dry mouth I have always had trouble with my teeth. Bridges, crowns etc. it cost me a fortune and I was always visiting the dentist. In the end when most of my top teeth were crowns bridges and a denture I had them all removed and implants put in that a denture would fi onto. Its been 2 years now and the best thing I have ever done, also I have received many compliments about my teeth, they look extremely natural.

I have now started to attended to my bottom teeth and everything is in place for when the they finally fail. Its not cheap, but in the long run you save money as you are not always replacing crowns and bridges.

Not everyone can have implants. I have a friend who does not have enough bone around her teeth to anchor implants and when I hade mine done my dentist warned me that the older you are the greater the chance of this happening. Fortunately in my case I had enough bone so the implant went ahead.
