Metronidazole

My "teeth" saga continues sadly .. went back to the dentist today, and she can really see no reason for my painful teeth both upper and lower, only a small area of inflammation/infection around the gum line of a large back crown.

So she has given me 5 days worth of metronidazole ... now I am very allergic to both the penicillins, and the cephalosporins .. and have never had any other antibiotic, until now.

I am hoping and praying I don't react to these, and that it helps with my toothache.

I know there are many of you with antibiotic allergies as I have, and so have any of you had metronidazole?
I am so scared to take it and yet I know I must try to get rid of this tooth pain.

She wants me to see a root canal specialist in a couple of weeks to find out which of my top teeth is the one causing the problem.
but oh I am so phobic about dentists and treatment .. oh hell ! shock
I had a tooth out 7 weeks ago as I couldn't face the root canal procedure, and the dentist agreed that it might not have worked anyway ... but still I have pain and ache.
Who'd have teeth eh??

I have been told by the pharmacist on no account drink alcohol while taking these tablets ... so no more lovely red wine.
Perhaps I 'll have just one glass tonight and start the tablets tomorrow ! grin

I'm allergic to all sorts of antibiotics, I have taken metronidazole but it didn't do anything for me. I seem to be either allergic in one way or another or they simply don't work. I hope you have more luck.

I told my pharmacist that Metronidazole was making me sick, to which she replied that I must have been drinking alcohol, which was totally untrue. I found the tooth infection did respond. I hope it works for you.

I am not allergic to anything - apart from Metronidazole. Back in 2003 whilst on holiday in Australia I developed a root canal infection.. The dentist prescribed some penicillin, paracetamol and Metronidazole. I took all the drugs about 11 am and by 5 pm I felt very hot and uncomfortable. Overnight my face swelled up enormously so I could only just see . I went straight to a pharmacist who said I must be allergic to the Metronidazole as it was only prescribed for infections in a tight restricted area (like a jaw). I took some anthistamine and my face gradully went back to normal over the next two days.
Recently I had to have a colonoscopy and when I mentioned this allergy the nurse said a lot of peoople are allergic to this drug.
Sorry to be such a downer.

Thanks for your replies all .. I am so scared of taking that first dose and have decided to do it to tomorrow morning .. but I wondered maybe I could take just half a tablet to begin with ? Just in case something horrid happens ... I know I am truly a wimp but I know how I’ve reacted in the past to things including anaesthetics and morphine etc .. oh and can’t tolerated codeine either hmm

Like you I'm allergic to penicillin and then metranzaole. It was the second time I took it I came out in hives. Stopped at one tablet and took anti histamine. It's the only anti biotic you really cant drink with....you'll be violently sick. Root canals aren't that bad. I've had a few and the thought is far worse than the actual deed.

I had an allergic reaction to Metronizadole and was initially accused by a doctor of drinking alcohol, which I wasn't.
Despite my allergy being noted on my hospital notes, (as well as other medication allergies ) I was given it again in theatre in a drip , under it's other name Flagyl.
I had a spinal block and could hear everything that was going on, that's how I knew. I tried to tell them, but it was too late.
I had to spend an extra week in hospital, as result!

However, it is very effective in combating mouth infections and reading the articles on it, allergic reactions seem to quite infrequent. I just happen to have a history of multiple allergies.

I hope you get some relief soon.

Sheena.Don't have a drink tonight and start the tablets tomorrow, you'll be very ill, you must leave at least two days alcohol free. Hope they work for you.

I had an allergic reaction to metronidazole. It happened with the first dose so you'll know straight away. The reactions stopped within hours of stopping taking it. I'm not allergic to any other antibiotics so I guess there is no link between them and this one. Take one tomorrow morning and see what happens.

Please dont have "just a glass" the reaction with that antibiotic can be very nasty!

Hope it works for you.

Zero alcohol though, its really a bad mix

SueDonim Fri 10-Jan-20 21:38:21

I’ve taken metronidazole (for amoebic dystentery!!) and had no adverse reaction. Alcohol is an absolute no-no, you’re likely to be very sick if you mix the two.

Get well soon. flowers

I'm allergic to penicillin and trimethaprim and like you hate to try anything else but metronidazole did work for me. I hope you're feeling better soon.

I have only just finished a 5 week continued course of Amoxicillin and Metrodinazole following a failed root canal procedure on my front tooth. My face was so swollen it looked like I had been in a boxing ring. Now on Doxycycline and things not much better so you have my absolute sympathy Sheena . I followed the Metrodanizole guidelines to the letter (not a sip of alcohol) and although I was never sick I did feel very nauseous most days and suffered reoccurring bouts of diarrhoea too. Wish I’d just had the bluddy tooth out weeks ago but apparently the infection has spread to my sinus and nose so waiting to see an ENT consultant. Happy days. Not.

@Sheena - Forgetting the Metronodazole issue for the moment - do you have any auto-immune issues, arthritis, eye problems or thyroid problems?

Have you recently had more problems with your teeth, eg fillings or crowns dropping out, and a dry mouth or thirst?

Judy54 Sun 12-Jan-20 14:06:49

I took metonidazole for a tooth infection and had no problems with them. It is important to take them exactly as prescribed with or after food. One tip I was given was take them with a pro-biotic drink like benacol because they have a nasty taste, this worked for me. Definitely no alcohol!

TrendyNannie6 Sun 12-Jan-20 14:15:23

I am allergic to penicillin so can only take certain tabs and flagyl not being one of them, can’t tolerate it, I certainly wouldn’t be having alcohol n starting the tabs tomorrow as you say, you have to be careful with tabs

clementine Sun 12-Jan-20 18:51:05

Definitely no alcohol, whatever they use to wean alcoholics off drink is the same ingredient as is in Metonidazole ( Flaggyl) so it's a definite no no. Hope you get some relief
