“ Health bosses speculate that the virus will continue to spread in the UK until it peaks in the summer, later than the previous assumption that it would peter out in the late spring. A source said: “We are planning that we are into this for the next few months.”.”

Taken from today’s newspapers. I really don’t see how this cannot spread to epidemic proportions in the UK when we are still allowing flights from China and a passenger from one of these has tested positive one for the virus in London.

Nothing we can do but wait helplessly.

suziewoozie Yes, we have a TV news reporter based in Peking who confirms that Death rate definitely consistently falling.

JenniferEccles

you didn't answer when I asked you if you are not in a vulnerable group? Because your kind of callousness is exactly the wrong attitude. Maybe you won't get it but maybe someone you care about will.

And while you stand by what you said, the virus is spreading.
The Govt should be doing more.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 10:45:58

Has anyone a link to anything that says the death rate has fallen. ( as opposed to the number of deaths) ?

tickingbird Thu 27-Feb-20 10:40:46

Over the past few days the death rate has fallen dramatically. That maybe because it’s peaked in China, where most of the deaths occurred. Or they may spike again as it spreads elsewhere.

PS. Have also stocked up on hand gel plus always do regular handwashing, but have increased doing that too.

I don't normally worry too much about this sort of thing, but this does seem very nasty if you get it badly. www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/02/here-is-what-coronavirus-does-to-the-body/

I have to go to the doctors today to collect a prescription. As far as I know, there are no cases very close to us. Never the less I will go to the doctors at what I hope is a quiet time, quickly in and out, and wash my hands thoroughly after. I am glad for once that we have no holiday abroad booked, as I get bugs from a plane flight at the best of times.

The good news is that the new cases in China have fallen now for the 3rd day running.

Sparklefizz Thu 27-Feb-20 10:33:10

I am in the high risk group. I have asthma and need to use a preventer inhaler every day, and sometimes a reliever inhaler too. I also have 8 other illnesses so am not in good health, plus there is also my age. I have bought some face masks while there are still some available to buy. Italy sold out of masks overnight.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 10:31:04

We simply can’t draw any conclusions from the handful of cases we’ve had so far as to how everything would be managed if numbers increase.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 10:28:32

The ones who’ve been discharged were looked after in hospital. I’d like to know what the plans are for if the number of cases reaches 3 or 4 figures. Also how ‘at risk’ were they?

Callistemon Thu 27-Feb-20 10:21:13

I know one family who will be returning from the Far East shortly with children at the DGCs' school. Will they self-isolate?

GagaJo Thu 27-Feb-20 10:19:05

They think 80% of us will get it at some point.

GagaJo Thu 27-Feb-20 10:18:28

Given that they think many of us will have it and not realise it is THE virus, I think it's going to spread madly.

The only reason I'm worried about myself with it is because at times I have asthma. Not recently, BUT that means I'm in a higher risk group. I never use either inhaler, but I've started using my steroid inhaler again for the first time in years, but in case.

I work overseas but was going home for Easter. Now thinking I shouldn't go. I'm desperate to see DGS but think its risky, flying.

Calendargirl Thu 27-Feb-20 10:07:31

Two more diagnosed in UK, to do with Italy and Tenerife.
We need to remember that 8 people have recovered already and been discharged.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 10:03:08

At the moment in the UK everyone who’s tested positive is in hospital, aren’t they? What will happen if the numbers increase? I understand that most people wouldn’t need hospitalisation but what about the vulnerable groups? Who will be admitted? How will that decision be made? It could all kick off very quickly as in Italy and I’d like to know what is planned. R4 Today said the Government refused to send a minister to appear on the programme. That’s beyond appalling.

DH likes to chat to the postman who reverses down our drive then hands him the post through the window.

I've asked postie to put it in the box on the outside wall instead and we'll pick it up from there. It makes sense to me because the one person who has daily contact with a lot of people over a large area is....the postman!

I can then give my hands a thorough wash after I've opened the mail.

Still no news from our local school about the students who have been taken ill after a ski-ing trip to Italy.

Sparklefizz Thu 27-Feb-20 09:38:28

GagaJo I would suggest bleach.

harrigran Thu 27-Feb-20 09:31:50

I fear they are under estimating the incubation period.
Saw a FB message from SIL last night saying he was flying to UK from big international airport, I suggested he kept his distance as best he could, his reply was that it would be difficult as it was a plane with less than forty seats.

GagaJo Thu 27-Feb-20 09:17:33

For cleaning, what products KILL the virus? At home, we have a shared bathroom. Just thinking about how to protect others if one of us had it.

GagaJo Thu 27-Feb-20 09:12:47

Girl at my school (Switzerland) has a heavy cold, problems breathing, been to the pediatrician. Not tested. DESPITE having had Italian guests staying here for a week, last week. ??????

tickingbird Thu 27-Feb-20 09:04:36

Back on topic - there are many people who have the mild form of the virus so aren’t aware they have CV and thereby pass it on unknowingly. Also as Italians are very touchy feely people the infection rate over there is probably much higher.

tickingbird Thu 27-Feb-20 09:01:39

YBNB Yes really??

Daisymae Thu 27-Feb-20 08:46:41

Numerous!

Daisymae Thu 27-Feb-20 08:46:09

Reading about the cluster of cases in Italy, it seems that one man had contact with medical services 4 times before he was tested. In the interim he has passed on the virus to numeet contacts including medical staff. They are investigating hospital procedures at the moment. There's an article in the Guardian with the details. I guess that this is a textbook case on how to spread the disease.

Lavazza1st Thu 27-Feb-20 08:25:20

Yes, the only masks that help are N95 certified filtration masks. 3M make them. But they are not designed for long periods of use and hard to get hold of unless you know someone working in an manufacture/industrial field.

The main problem is, they are dificult to breathe in and not suitable for long periods of time.

Basically getting by with faith. My husband is considered in the vulnerable category and the authorities saw fit not to quarantine our family members who were evacuated from China because they were clear on all tests. We are overjoyed to have them here and living in the moment.

Yehbutnobut Thu 27-Feb-20 08:22:33

Really?
