I wonder if this will happen. 4 months, crikey

humptydumpty Sun 15-Mar-20 11:00:19

Luckily for me, I'm not 70 until next year, because I would go absolutely mad having to self-isolate for 4 months!! I get cabin fever if I have to spend 1 day without going outside..

Willow10 Sun 15-Mar-20 10:46:49

Just how exactly are they going to enforce this? Police on every street corner waiting to catch, arrest and fine us? confused My local Waitrose is heavily staffed by retirees, ditto B&Q. Volunteers? Carers? This hapless government seems to have forgotten that the 'expendable' over 70's do a great deal of work that they would otherwise have to pay for. I wish they would think this all out properly before coming up with these ridiculous measures.

M0nica Sun 15-Mar-20 10:26:05

annsixty absolutely agree. The last thing we need at the moment is the government acting like headless chickens. There are quite enough of them on Gransnet (not you!)

annsixty Sun 15-Mar-20 09:11:27

No supermarket delivery slots available for next 2 weeks from my local Sainsburys.
If we cant go out to shop we will starve, and no-one will know as they can't visit.
Hundreds of old folk lying dead in their beds.
Okay I am catastrophising but has this all been thought through?

M0nica Sun 15-Mar-20 08:36:18

sharon you need to remember that many people do not live in houses with gardens, they live in small flats and bedsits in urban areas, then imagine a heatwave.

Try limiting yourself to the two smallest rooms in your huse, say 2 bedrooms and the bathroom and then consider whether you would be happy to spend 4 months in them.

Arrangements will have to be made for urgent care but everything else will be postponed/cancelled.

dragonfly46 Sun 15-Mar-20 07:41:07

I am having cancer treatment - what will happen to that?

craftyone Sun 15-Mar-20 07:36:34

I don`t think we will be allowed out Sharon, if we are then I will be out and about, cycling solo, not far just enough to stretch my legs and look at the spring scenery

I counted my compost bags today, need some more so am going to the farmers warehouse, they load the bags, I quick tap on my card and done. I am expecting a couple of hundred plug plants and have miscalculated compost requirements.

Sharon, I need to say this gently, the virus is transmitted via droplets of moisture through the air, when someone coughs or sneezes, hence the great need to keep a distance of around 9 feet

sharon103 Sun 15-Mar-20 01:43:25

Big hugs craftyone.
You get to sleep, if and I repeat, if that happens it seems to be that you can go outdoors because the virus isn't airborne it's passed on via people.
Night night. xx

Thank you for the info EllanVannin Sat 14-Mar-20 21:42:34
Also for the link on ready meals welbeck Sat 14-Mar-20 22:57:28

It hit me tonight, could not sleep, 4 months I understand that but 4 months confined to quarters, not able to cycle solo or go for a walk.

janipat Sun 15-Mar-20 00:36:16

Well, the Queen has cancelled all future engagements. Does that count?
As long as she made the decision herself (albeit it may have been after advice) then I'm fine with it, and she is 93 almost 94, which is almost a generation older than 70 years old people. What any individual decides that doesn't endanger others is fine by me, but enforced house arrest of innocents is beyond the pale.

welbeck Sat 14-Mar-20 22:57:28

i think this is the best advice for survival. in practical terms.
i know it can sound a bit daunting.
but at least everyone on here has the internet to entertain them, and keep in touch with friends/ relatives.
as to MPs etc, much of their work could still be done from home, including helping constituents, much of that is giving information/ advice/ liaising with other agencies.
as for GPS, hosp appts, many of them are already doing much of it by phone and or video link.
no one in meant to attend GPs without getting permission first, which is rarely given at he moment.
we can all help keep each other's spirits up on here.

by the way if anyone needs any basic easy cook ready meals, i can recommend parsley box. they are reasonably priced, deliver to the door, and best of all can be stored at ambient temperature for several months, no fridge or freezer space needed. they can be microwaved or in oven if preferred.

There are two threads on this - can they be amalgamated in some way?

I am assuming this idea is for our own protection - but what happens when the 4 months comes to an end and the bug is still around I do not know.

I could manage if I had to - bad timing as I have just lost my DH and company and getting out and about are likely the best way to lift my spirits. And I would have hoped to be moving house during that period of time.

We can only wait and see. I would just engage myself in a new craft project.

merlotgran Sat 14-Mar-20 22:39:40

janipat Sat 14-Mar-20 22:36:23

As long as it applies to all........judges, the Lords, MPs, company directors, Boris's dad etc etc . Isn't Corbyn 70? So his constituents are expected to go unrepresented for 4 months. I'm not 70 so won't be affected, but husband is and he has no intention of being put under house arrest for no crime. If either of us catches the virus then of course we'd self isolate.

Gingster Sat 14-Mar-20 22:30:25

Does it mean that we can’t go out at all? Long walks along the beach or in the countryside? Surely this is ok?

Tweedle24 Sat 14-Mar-20 22:21:12

I am 76 and alone most of the time. Whilst I would not relish being on ‘house arrest’ for four months, if it prevents me dying from a horrible virus, I would willingly put up with it.

blondenana Sat 14-Mar-20 22:21:00

I wasn't panicking before, but i am now, i don't go far anyway, but the thought of being forced to stay in worries me
What about Drs and hospital appointments etc?

Anniebach Sat 14-Mar-20 21:56:00

Big problem, I can’t cut my finger and toe nails !

BlueSky Sat 14-Mar-20 21:49:46

Can the over 70 still shop? What about doctors? confused

EllanVannin Sat 14-Mar-20 21:42:34

You're alright with windows and doors open Sharon, it's on people not airborne.

EllanVannin Sat 14-Mar-20 21:38:43

If it means me staying put for the next 6 months when I turn 80, then so be it. After that----------------

sharon103 Sat 14-Mar-20 21:38:30

I'm not 70, I'm 65 but it wouldn't bother me. I like my own company and peace and quiet. As long as I could have my shopping delivered and left outside. I have my phone, laptop, tv and my cats. I'm a competition addict so that would keep me busy.
Forgive me for seeming daft but when they say isolation, does this mean with all windows and doors shut for four months and not able to go out into the garden?

annsixty Sat 14-Mar-20 21:20:10

I am 82 so doomed from the start but I am also scheduled for a THR in a private hospital in less than 2 weeks.
Calls are being made for all private beds to be used by NHS.
I am penalised on all counts but no problem self isolating as I cannot get out.
Win win for everyone (but me)
