I have received an email from Morrisons today. They are going to open from 07:00-08:00 for NHS workers only, and the doors will be manned.
Let us hope the other food stores do the same (but different hours).

My friend went to Tesco in Southampton in their 9-10 slot for pensioners but because they opened at 6 there was nothing left. Also the place was full of younger people even though they kept announcing over the tannoy that hour was for senior citizens.

As I said on a different thread, I visited my nearest Tesco at 9.20 on Friday. I found the store very busy, with the usual mix of people, many young and with children. I had thought that there might have been some sort of monitoring at the door, but no. I have since spoken to someone at Tesco, who said that it's difficult as some of the younger customers might be suffering from underlying conditions, and how can they prove otherwise. Not a well thought through initiative, just giving me more or less the same shopping experience that I usually have.

Whilst I applaud morrisons for helping the nhs staff get their supplies, this morning morrisons leaflets where being hand delivered to every household containing money off coupons to spend in their stores over the next couple of weeks.
Surely they have more than made a profit lately and wrong to encourage people to visit the store to spend the coupons that stretch over the next 4 weeks..... or is it just me ??!!

gardeningpower the NHS Trust I work for are providing free staff meals from this week, it was announced in a letter from the CEO.

Whilst delighted that Sainsburys etc are having a separate opening time for NHS staff, they need to bear in mind that not all care workers are NHS staff. Think about the hospice nurses, and the home carers, who are very much at the front line and at risk.

And have a separate priority online ordering system for them to click and collect on their way home.

polnan Sun 22-Mar-20 12:33:55

Morrisons yuck, I emailed them had nothing back, well an acknowledgement

Sainsburys have turned up trumps for me,, I can at least get an online delivery,, but our local Morrisons is just up the road from me, I can get there, but can`t get to Sainsburys,, so I will be a Sainsburys shopper from now on,, well assuming they will "deliver" the online delivery they have promised

so what about the mental health,, this isolation is causing?

My daughter is an NHS worker. Has just been to Tesco as they were opening an hour early. The queues outside were horrific. Anyone without NHS ides wasn't allowed in, but it was still rammed and the shelves were empty anyway. It has taken her over two hours to get very little. The powers that be say there is plenty of food in the warehouses so why weren't the shelves stocked up overnight? By the time she left there were no queues waiting to get in. Mind you, I have found the local , small, usually "just in an emergency" shops are well stocked with most basics (including loo paper). Are we becoming too obsessed with the big supermarkets?

notgoneyet Sun 22-Mar-20 12:30:27

The last time I went out it was to do a last shop before I completely stayed in, on Thursday when Sainsbury's opened for the 7am-8am slot for the elderly. Queue was very long by the time it opened. Staff at the door letting ONLY elderly in. Great idea, and made for much less stressful shopping. However, all this was slightly marred by the fact that there was hardly anything on the shelves - no meat, no potatoes, no flour, no honey, no rice, no pasta. This is because that particular store don't have any overnight deliveries so nothing had been restocked. And Tesco are opening Monday Wednesday and Friday for the over 70s - but from 9am when the store opens at 6.30. So how much will be left there by 9am?

Purplepixie Sun 22-Mar-20 12:27:17

I over heard one of our neighbours telling people that his shopping was for his elderly mother when in fact it was for himself. These people make me sick. Our cupboards have an adequate amount in them before the virus and I refuse to panic buy. Also I feel sorry for those elderly and NHS workers would are up against this and hope that the supermarkets do help them. There will be people who will spoil the system though.

I got an email from sainsbury's to say I'm 1 of their venerable customers and they are setting home delivery and click and collect for people like me it starts on Monday

Morrisons days ago posted on their FACEBOOK page their dedicated hours.

missdeke Sun 22-Mar-20 12:21:12

My daughter in Spain phoned this morning and said, things have calmed down in Alicante and the shops have introduced rationing. Her partner went shopping today and there was everything they wanted on the shelves, including fresh fruit and veg, meat, eggs and toilet paper, last wwek they shelves were empty. Maybe with a bit of luck and common sense we will be heading that way soon.

suziewoozie Sun 22-Mar-20 12:20:44

1.4 million of course

suziewoozie Sun 22-Mar-20 12:20:24

Doesn’t anyone else want online deliveries? From tomorrow 1.4 extremely vulnerable people have been told in no uncertain terms to self isolate ie no going shopping for one thing.

Littleannie Sun 22-Mar-20 12:17:44

Esspee
I had an email from M and S. First hour of trading Monday and Thursday is for elderly people.
I think Monday Wednesday and Friday 9 till 10 for Tesco, BUT not entirely sure about this . Perhaps someone else can confirm.
Hope this helps.

suziewoozie Sun 22-Mar-20 12:12:07

We need online deliveries for heavens sake - it’s not rocket science as to why

WOODMOUSE49 Sun 22-Mar-20 12:09:51

Not checked other comments but huge THANKS to Sainbury's . They are going to same, Opening 1/2 hour before just for NHS - they need to take ID,

The its an hour for at risk groups. MONDAY WEDNESDAY FRIDAY. need to take ID.

Vulnerable groups need to contact Sainsbury and register their details and get dedicated help.

jennilin Sun 22-Mar-20 12:09:02

I must admit I am buying a little more than usual. My DH has MS and a compromised immune system. I don't want to shop too often because of this. I want to keep him safe. I'm planning to hopefully shop every 3/4 weeks.. I hope that all panic buyers have got all they need now and things can calm down a little. Stay safe x

starbird Sun 22-Mar-20 12:06:31

Not well done for Mortisons -i was in there Saturday, not only no toilet rolls or kitchen paper, soap, bleach, cleaning spray, but no fresh fruit, or veg only a few lettuce, not one potato even, no canned veg or pulses or tins/packets of tomatoes, no frozen veg or chips, no day to day breakfast cereals, no rice, or baby milk, I heard someone ask a staff member when more was coming in he said we have the stock but no time to put it out - there was one young lad putting out bread working in very slow motion, no other people even attempting to stock. Like me there were bewildered pensioners just wanting a normal shop of necessities, and probably like me had been there several times before and left empty handed. We have been needlessly exposed to crowds for nothing, and still no mention of a pensioners hour.
Even though it’s further, I will be going to Tesco from now on Mon, Weds, Fri first hour 9am? for pensioners only ( Tues, Thurs for NHS staff).

gardeningpower Sun 22-Mar-20 12:01:20

When your shift NHS starts at 7, or 7.30 am like many staff early opening hours not useful, the NHS should give there staff a free hot meal if they are working long hours.

suziewoozie Sun 22-Mar-20 11:44:30

No well done to any supermarket from me. Anything they do is too little, too late, badly planned executed. Their profits are going through the ceiling and they’ve had weeks to organise a proper online delivery system. Think about the data analysts and logistic people they employ.

When this is all over, I hope there’s a COVID — 19 windfall tax on all businesses that saw soaring profits because of it.

All these comments of course are aimed at the CEOs and directors not staff in shops

gillybob Sun 22-Mar-20 11:40:16

I would normally take my dad for a big Asda shop on a Friday and sometimes a few bits on a Tuesday too (depending on my circumstances) I normally shop on a Sunday for ourselves. This last 2 weeks I have just been popping into Morrison’s (near my work) or Asda trying to get bits of whatever I can for everyone (including a couple of my dads neighbours) .

We have very few independent shops here in this town. No butchers or fruit and veg shops left. So it’s the supermarket or nothing I’m afraid.

EllanVannin Sun 22-Mar-20 11:26:33

My GS is in food productions for Morrisons and is working hard to get food ready for their shelves and M&S' s too as they supply quite a lot of foodstuff for both.
Morrisons are advertising for staff to help with deliveries. It's a better company than others as it's family owned.

I wouldn't dream of giving him a " shopping list " of supplies needed----he's too busy, yet I could have done if I'd belonged to the vulture family, and got 10% off too !
I doubt he even thinks to bring anything home to his mum.

It'll be three weeks this coming Wednesday since I did a shop and the 'fridge is looking a bit thin. Milk will last a couple more days, 2 eggs left, 1 being used today for pud. butter coming to the end, bread is a few days old now ( yuk ) 2 days of crumpets , oh heck.

Normally I'd be off to Asda next week armed with my list and to me now, this is proving to be very frustrating.
Yes, I still have the local shops but have to buy Lurpak in a block as opposed to a spreadable tub, eggs are usually from caged birds---a bit to consider, horrible wrapped bread.

I'm going to look for a farm that delivers.

gillybob Sun 22-Mar-20 11:18:10

So “no” not well done Morrisons at all . They would have done far better stopping the shelf stripping in the first place . I watched people with trolleys piled high with beer and wine yesterday . But profits come first eh?
