Anyone taken this antibiotic? Only taken for two days but suddenly getting side effects, I’m on 1.000mg per day, 500mg per tab, and I must say this is a shocker of a antibiotic! Pains in stomach, not able to sleep, making my reflux worse, given it as after I had my thyroid biopsy I developed bad raspiness, I sound awful and experiencing dizziness too, the tabs are so big I got one stuck in my throat, took ages to go down, rang pharmacist who said cut in half, getting awful taste in my mouth, Anyone had experience, I’m allergic to penicillin, feeling really under the weather, biopsy results next week

I have been on it as an alternative to Penicillin, which I'm allergic to.
Metronizadole gives me the symptoms, you are experiencing and it was classed, eventually as an allergic reaction.

Those side effects are common when taking Clairithromycin, but you sound really concerned. If it was me, would contact my GP ASAP.

I hope you feel better soon.

I've been prescribed it only once as I'm allergic to penicillin. I think it was a fairly low dosage and I didn't get any of the side effects described by OP. It did, however, make me very weepy and depressed. I hated myself, hated the world and was a total nightmare. If I'm ever offered it again I would refuse it.
Fingers crossed you will soon be feeling a lot better trendynanny flowers

I had Clarithromycin for six weeks without any side effects. The doctors thought I had a chronic sinus infection. The antibiotics made no difference and when I finally had surgery to clear it, they found that it was a fungal infection. When I was taking Clarithtomycin, I was warned to stop taking statins and I wonder if the OP has been advised about this.

Try taking large pills in yoghurt, the viscosity helps to get them down.

Trendy I feel for you as a lot of antibiotics give me stomach problems plus I've difficulties to swallow larger tablets or capsules and always check whether it can be cut or the capsule content dissolved in water. But I would get in touch with your GP and ask for their advice.

I'm allergic to penecillin and any antibiotic in the "cin" family.

I would ask for something different.

I’m not on statins, haven’t been asked to stop any other meds, think if the side effects don’t settle down I will ask to change to another one, I don’t generally have trouble with most antibiotics.feeling run down at the moment, don’t feel depressed or anxious but just not myself

Oh, I had a terrible time with Clarithromycin.

Really upset stomach, terrible full body rash, constipation, really depressed and feeling helpless.
One charming locum GP told me to ‘put up with it’.
My own GP changed my meds.

I keep a list of antibiotics that don’t work well for me and have had it added to my medical records. Clarithromycin and Erithromycin are at the top of that list.
Trendy, request a change immediately... these antibiotics are dreadful for some of us.

Good luck.

It seems to be the only one I can take.

However, if you are having side effects, phone your GP first thing tomorrow.

It sounds familiar. I'm allergic to penicillin and was once prescribed one that sounded like that. I couldn't keep it (or anything) down and kept projectile vomiting.

It's on my medical notes to avoid that one!

I’ve never taken it, but I do think it would be a good idea to get a medical opinion before you take any more.

welbeck Sat 05-Sep-20 00:07:32

you could ring 111, and request an alternative.
there are so many different antibiotics available,no need to endure one that may be causing such extra problems.
also if you are allergic to penicillin, this one may be too closely related.
good luck.

I am also allergic to penicillin and was given clarithromycin in hospital. Within 15 minutes I had a complete anaphylactic shock, so definitely allergic. Wonder if there is a same chemical as in penicillin ?

Another bad night on these tabs , honestly I’ve halved the dose, still having nausea. Stomach pain now, managed to get few hours sleep but had a weird dream, yes I’m allergic to penicillin, I’m going to contact pharmacist today and explain, these tabs also making my reflux worse I’m choking when eating, drinking loads of water too,.cant take these will be asking today for alternative,

BlueSky Sat 05-Sep-20 09:47:51

Trendy I sympathise, I recently took some antibiotics which started off my reflux. I stopped them but now I'm left with stomach problems as well as a tight chest. Definitely have a word with the pharmacist.

TrendyNannie6 Sat 05-Sep-20 10:13:26

Reflux is horrendous isn’t it blue sky it’s taken over my life, I am waiting to see specialist who I know will help me I’m feeling in limbo at the moment, waiting for thyroid biopsy results and feeling so under the weather, and trying to get on with life, I’m a very positive person, but I’m thinking deal with one thing at a time, hopefully feel a bit better when change these tabs, I have a feeling though antibiotics maybe make reflux worse, have you had a upper endoscopy bluesky, I think that’s what I need but terrified

Callistemon Sat 05-Sep-20 10:15:03

also if you are allergic to penicillin, this one may be too closely related.

Just to clarify:

Clarithromycin is not related to penicillin therefore is often prescribed to anyone who is allergic to the penicillin family of antibiotics.

Callistemon Sat 05-Sep-20 10:15:52

Sorry, I should have put the first sentence in ^^ as it is a quote. It is important so I'll try again!

But do ask for an alternative asap.

Trendy sorry you have various issues to deal with at the moment, I had similar 2 years ago, just try to deal with one at the time. No endoscopy yet but I haven't mentioned it much before because I was worried about it. But if it's needed it's needed, they can give a sedative, when I had a head MRI I worried about it for months, then it was quite bearable.
