Morning all!
So yesterday i woke with a nasty ‘common cold’, later in the evening whilst chopping spring onions realised i couldnt smell them, or anything or taste.
I work with children and have been advised to get a test, easier said than done ?
However i am thinking its not unusual to lose taste and smell with a cold, should i just push to go back to work untested?
Many thanks xx

Nickysmadhouse. How did you get on Nicky?
Have you had your result yet?

I’ve just returned from having my hair cut and my hairdresser was explaining how her son a student in London and staying in a flat with 4 other students has along with all the others been tested and diagnosed with covid. All 5 presented with entirely different symptoms and all to differing degrees ill.

Her son who I know well has been eminently sensible as have all 4 others simply shopping without socialising at all, so they are surprised to have contracted covid. All 5 are now reasonably over it but friends son has zero energy after a month recovery and is still unable to carry out his 10k run. At the moment 1k absolutely floors him, and he finds he sleeps at the drop of a hat.

The COVID symptoms are very specific and do not include a stuffed nose, runny nose and sneezing, the standard symptoms of a cold.

This was made very clear earlier in the summer when the BBC news site, and probably others had a long running item about the difference between COVID and hay fever. A doctor was interviewed on the news this morning talking about the symptoms of COVID and the minor variations between age groups - children do not seem to lose their sense of smell the older you are the more likely this is.

I think both individuals and those running schools etc, should make themselves fully aware so that people with cold symptoms are not being excluded or self-excluding in case they have COVID.

That is one of the symptoms of Covid-19, not a sore throat. If you can't get a test you have to self isolate for 14 days, if you have symptoms 10. If you have symptoms which you do your contacts need to self isolate for 14 days. The rules have not changed! If you can get a test and it is negative then you can go back to work and your contacts can stop.

My DGS school told me they had been given 10 test kits! All gone within a few days!

Brismum Wed 16-Sep-20 17:15:15

Franbern. Our local school was allocated 10 tests at the beginning of term. Halfway through the first week they’d all gone!! They can ask for more but won’t necessarily get them!

My daughter had a sore throat and cough. Her school told her to stay away until she gets a negative test. Easier said than done. There is a testing centre at the bottom of her road, nearly always empty - but when she went there, was told that they are not permitted to test anyone who has not been booked in - despite them standing around doing nothing at the time. She and her hubbie took it in turns on the computer to book a test virtually anywhere in Southern England. Took them nearly thirty (30) hours to do this.
She is 99% certain it is normal winter cough, etc. but can understand the school needing the negative test - which - hopefully, will arrive in 48 hours. All the time they were on the computer they stated that NO postal tests were available.,
What does concern me is that with such an total mess-up in capacity for testing throughout the country, and with every teacher and child being excluded from school for a fortnight with every cold symptom in the winter months, exactly how much education will actually be able to be achieved.
Cannot understand why every school does not have their own testing kits available for immediate use - and every hospital.

No, stay away and try to get a test. Isolate for the required amount of time. It was on TV this morning that it was impossible to get a slot for a test on line but test centres were empty! I know you aren't supposed to just turn up but might be worth a try if you have a test centre near you.

tidy it’s not as simple as numbers - it’s about organisation, availability, speed of results. We are failing on all those - quelle surprise

The UK is doing more testing than any other European country but there’s an outcry about being unable to book a test. The percentage of positive tests is still very low. Perhaps the Worried Well or those with a bit of a sniffle should take a long hard look at themselves and leave the tests for people with real symptoms. I shall now put my hard hat on.

VRH1 sorry to sound ignorant but what is a pulse oximeter and where do I get one please. The scary bit is that you would not know if your oxygen levels were low, and it they are your time is fast running out.

I got mine from Amazon a couple of months ago. I've got asthma and they always clip an oxymeter onto my finger when I go to the asthma clinic so I thought it would be a useful gadget for my first aid box.

After hours on the website and a couple of fruitless calls I finally managed to book tests to come in post, however I am glad we aren’t all ill as it stipulates that you have to walk or drive to a designated special Covid post box and post an hour before last collection.

I have been trying since Saturday to get a test I live in Kent and was told to put in a Glasgow postcode and then use the code to get an apt locally

nickysmadhouse glad you eventually got your test, so frustrating for you especially when you feel unwell. Hopefully it will be negative. Take care of yourself and I agree

Shut up

You shouldn't be staying off work just because you " couldn't physically get there!" Your first priority should be not to infect others, even if it's just a bad cold. I despair - no wonder people are dropping like flies.

Nickysmadhouse Tue 15-Sep-20 07:47:16

@angie4409 im def not going to work, i couldnt physically get there! However i am still sure it is the common cold, got a test at 11.30 this morning but in reading the News, results are taking days ?

angie4409 Tue 15-Sep-20 07:31:45

Please please do not even think of going to work, I heard of a whole place being shut down due to someone that felt unwell got a test did not bother to wait for the results went to the pub, all his mates got infected the whole pub and in turn the whole area was shut down due to Covid. This is serious stuff. Stay home please.

Some walk in centres are not busy at all, you are supposed to have an appointment though but apparently, as there are no queues and you are not taking another's slot they will give you a test. If you are desperate you can buy them online, but NO, you should not go to work, you should self isolate , quarantine, for at least 7 days if you have symptoms.

Rosalyn69 That was my first thought too. Couldn't believe anyone could ask this.

Violettham Tue 15-Sep-20 00:32:43

Agree with Soosiewoosie. I received an invitation quite early on to take part in a survey and had a test. I wondered if the names came from Doctors who knew who was vunerable.

Joplin Mon 14-Sep-20 23:14:20

Ditto Bobbysgirl - just what I'd been thinking. I don't understand why the question had even been asked - I'd have felt embarrassed just to consider it!

Bobbysgirl19 Mon 14-Sep-20 22:20:15

Like your name Nicky, as certainly is a mad question!!
Surely you know the answer!

definitely get a test, my son in law had classic symptoms without breathing difficulties, had a test last friday , ill all over the weekend, and has now had a positive result
