Tumeric for joint pain

I recently started taking turmeric for joint pain but within about 2 weeks I came out in a horrible rash - all over body and arms.(emergency dermatology appointment in midst of lockdown - that bad!) So I stopped taking them . Rash has gone now but I dont know whether it was a side effect or just coincidence. Has any one else encountered a rash?

I take Turmeric with black pepper and think it helps - but its hard to be sure how the joints would be if I were not taking it. However, I am not giving turmeric up! I notice that somewhere it says turmeric has a slight diuretic effect - I get up at night quite a lot anyway, and am not sure if turmeric has added to that. My doctor also gives me a gel to rub into the joints - again, I think it helps, and am not going to stop using it, which would be the way to see if anything changes. Am glad I took HRT for many years, though recently had a scare about possibly having ovarian cancer. Still being looked at, but evidence suggests its just a cyst.

I've been taking it for 10 months and have not noticed any improvement. I shall finish the jar and the stop if the pain in teases I will be happy, but I hold no hopes. I hope it works for you, all you can do is try it, maybe you will be lucky.

yes i make my own ,cheaper than buying and probably better than shop bought.Its called 'golden paste recipe' It has been an indian medicine for a long time, helps all sorts of things, from pains to depression why not take it anyway?

Black pepper's other name is Curcumin by the way an dyes, it's essential to take a tablet that has them combined for best effect - and who wants anything less !! Yes, take one a day and in a few weeks all will be well. I take it every day - may have to up the dose to 2 per day during damp winter months. Anyone any advice about that ?
As for powder - wonderful stuff. Sprinkle it on stews and curries and anything like that, stir it into cottage /shepherd's pie mix. Just use it. No one will know it's in the dish unless you mention it. I agree - it's vile to drink in milk etc so just stir it into anything savoury.
Turmeric powder is also a wonder cure for burns - just mix a bit into a paste with milk, cover the burn and it works wonders. Wouldn't be without it !

NemosMum oh how i wish i had not been afraid of HRT many years ago, maybe i would not be having all the joint issues i am right now. Pain and limited mobility are very hard to bear especially when you had always been so active in earlier life. I have told my daughter and DIL all to take it if they are able to to safe guard themselves in the future.

I recommended Glucosamine with Chondroitin to a friend whose wife was in terrible pain waiting for a hip replacement. It worked so well, she was able to postpone her op. I should say that there are certain people for whom this supplement is not suitable, so research is needed.

I started on the capsules in February, My fingers swelled up and couldn't keep wedding ring on. Took 3 months but it worked. Only £2.50 from home bargains (often in the weight training dept)

I have been taking Turmeric for a year (from Amazon, and contains black pepper). Not sure if it's done any good at all so I'm going to stop for a while and see what happens. I take so many supplements and also prescribed meds because of juggling so many health problems including multiple food intolerances and allergies, that it would be good to save the money and save having to swallow yet another capsule.

You would have to take 2 tablespoons of turmeric every day to have any effect. Glucosamine has only placebo effect. HRT has been shown to be beneficial for knee osteoarthritis, if you happen to be taking it for other reasons, but it would be an 'off-label' use if you were to ask your doctor. Exercise has about the best effect of all - little and often!

I have been taking it for about 18 months. Not sure if it is doing anything or if I would be worse without it. I use H&B capsules with black pepper. I had expected more from it.
Also trying that stuff Flexiseq. It warns there may be no effect for up to two weeks. After four days I had more mobility in my knees. I forgot to use it for a couple of nights and am back to where I started.

Can recommend went away in September for a week and didn’t take them soon the achey knees came back. Started taking them as soon as I returned and have now returned to ‘normal’.
I get mine on Amazon and they have the black pepper in them.

I can too easily be a pill popper, so I got the powder, but ugh!
I do not like the smell of it or the taste, so any suggestions how to use my , rather large packet of Turmeric would be helpful to me.

Turmeric + Black pepper (from Holland & Barrett) work for me. ( I first took Turmeric 70 years ago courtesy of a new Indian doctor in our village.) Wonderful. We have always used it a lot in cooking curry dishes, but you need to have it in its purest form. Amongst other things it's the best natural anti-inflammatory. I also take Glucosamine with Chondroitin. That will take maybe 3 weeks or so to start seeing results, but my problem ankle joint (Osteoarthritis from a break), back pain, knee twinges, all 90% improved. Osteopath first suggested that I take it. Can thoroughly recommend.

Small point maybe, but as dragonfly points out, check with your GP or Pharmacist first if you are on long-term meds.

DD2 has tried Turmeric and various other herbal ‘remedies’ whilst waiting for knee ops, nothing has helped.
I guess you pays your money and takes your chance, however, it probably can’t do you any harm If you aren’t taking any other medication, so give it a try.

Be very careful if you are on other medication because they can interact with Turmeric. Ask your GP.

Turmeric has also been shown to prevent, slow down and even reverse to some extent- Alzheimers. So win, win.

I did read about the need for a capsule containing black pepper, and have heard that glucosamine is good. I will order both.

I had a knee X-ray a few years ago which showed degenerative changes consistent with my age. I do think I need another one but find the whole hassle of getting a Drs appt at the moment annoying !!

Another supplement to consider is Glucosamine. I've taken this for years, off and on, and wouldn't be without it now.
I take Turmeric as well and get them from Healthspan online.

Hello Flaxseed, I take Turmeric everyday for painful joints. I buy it from the High Street health food shop who currently have it on offer. Buy one and another one for a penny. If you buy some make sure it also has Black Pepper with it because that, for some reason, helps with absorption and effectiveness. At this stage I would recommend you ask for an x-ray for your most painful joints. This will then offer up a bench mark in the future if your knees or whatever get much worse. X-rays can be a comparison tool later.
I dare not stop taking Turmeric with black pepper as I truly believe it helps me. It doesn't cure but it does ease the pain I think. However, you need to take it for some weeks, maybe an entire bottle before you will find yourself thinking "my joints don't feel too bad today"! Nothing ventured, nothing gained but stick with it & the exercise too of course. Best wishes ...
