Genuinely curious

As the vaccine has been developed by Germany and United States of America I cannot understand why their own people have not been given it first. Why us?

ReadyMeals Sat 12-Dec-20 10:10:16

I'd really like to know what constituent of the vaccine triggered the two people's allergic reactions. Just curiosity really, as I don't have allergies myself. But rather than telling everyone with severe allergies not to get the jab, if they said exactly WHICH allergies it might trigger it would be helpful. No point in withholding it from people with bad hay fever if it's actually milk allergies that it triggers!

Trump's investment in Sanofi is about $450

I took hydroxychloroquine for 3 years as prescribed for consultant dermatologist for rare firm of alopecia. Developed a macular hole - one of the side effects of taking the dtug. Perhaps that's what's wrong with Trump - he can't see the light only the money.

By not for and firm not firm. Blasted eye and thumb!

I'm on the Oxford trial so I'm hoping I had the actual vaccine.

My husband and son have both been taking part in the vaccine trial. My son had a mild flu type reaction to the second dose so we think he had the real thing, but my husband (who is extremely vulnerable) has had no reaction so possibly has had the placebo. I wish it had been the other way round!

If you have allergies you would get further advice giving details of your own allergies! Not just assume you can't have the vaccine because you have allergies.!!
as the two nhs workers who had the reactions both carried epi pens you would think that would have been declared and discussed before they were given the jab! I wonder if it was!

I read that the vaccine being used in Russia was trialled with fewer than 300 people before being used! Apparently the Oxford team are now looking at the Russian vaccine as it uses similar methods to see if they can be combined to improve the efficacy.

This is the information leaflet for the Pfizer vaccine. I looked it up because I carry an Epipen as severe allergy to wasp stings, some shellfish (unknown which) - both reactions to these would be severe facial and body swelling, thankfully some years ago. I have the flu vaccination every year with no problems, I would take the covid vaccine, from the ingredient list it would be unclear what you would be allergic to as mainly chemical ingredients. My guess is that I would probably get the Oxford vaccine as I am in group 7 of phase 1 and the Oxford vaccine will be more suitable for mass vaccinating.

Right from the start EU countries have been developing vaccines. The Pfizer-Biontech one is one of many.

The UK chose to invest in it, whereas some other countries are waiting to use their own.

Also, the UK seems to have a shorter programme for reviewing new drugs than the EU.

Caro57 Sat 12-Dec-20 12:57:16

......and what about the unfortunate countries who do not have our wealth - unless everyone is vaccinated the virus will only mutate and come back to haunt us!

Well no, at this time, people with "severe allergies", non-specific, have been advised formally (government/health authority) not to have the jab. Blanket advice. That's what I am saying, I'd rather it was more refined by allergy type rather than just not vaccinate a load of people unnecessarily. Presumably therefore people who need an epi-pen just won't go.

ReadyMeals Sat 12-Dec-20 13:20:36

Should have added, it sounds like the presence of allergens in the jab hadn't been considered. I'd say the most likely allergen would have been in the cholesterol, which usually comes either from bovine spine or sheeps wool - lanolin - which some people are allergic to.

Phloembundle Sat 12-Dec-20 13:43:36

Don't worry Shinamae, you've just met one of the resident pedants. They're probably quite nice when they can get their huge heads out of their arses.

Hi ReadyMeals as a person that has to carry Epipens l have been concerned. I think you will find (and if there are any doctors here and my information is inaccurate feel free to correct me) that it’s people that have an over active immune system. Not just the regular group of allergies but immune system’s that attack the person’s own body. I have had Anaphylaxis with out warning or having come into contact or being exposed to any allergens. It’s as far as I have experienced an internal thing to do with the person not just a specific thing that they are allergic too. I feel confident that we will all have the vaccine even myself and it’s going to be in controlled environments for safety. If l have a reaction to it medical professionals will be aware that l have had Anaphylaxis on occasions and be ready to treat it. I trust our NHS and I will put my life in their hands any day. Speak with professionals to settle your concerns. X

jenni123 I am sorry, you are incorrect. The guinea pigs were the 25,000 people who volunteered to have the vaccination tested on them. One of the 25,000 was my DH and would have been me, if I had seen the invite in time. The team in Oxford throughly tested everything

It also was checked and passed by our medication registration system that applied exactly the same standards and testing requirements that apply to any drug approved for use in the UK

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but didn’t the U.K. buy massive quantities of hydroxychloroquine when it was touted by Trump as an effective treatment?

chrissyh Sat 12-Dec-20 17:18:56

Shinamae don't worry I, and most probably many others, knew exactly what you meant.

Pilgrim Sat 12-Dec-20 19:27:42

In future days, you may be frightened to discover how wrong you are. The USA has enemies working within and without, seeking to destroy the country. Pres. Trump loves the USA, its history and its people. He has done more for the financial and physical well-being of its populace (including black, small business owners) than any U.S. President in recent history. He sees and has encouraged the potential for every hard-working U.S. citizen, whatever race -- NOT a vision of Socialism/Communism. Mr. Biden's party seeks to upend the historical, social, and financial values of America, seeking not opportunity for all but "equality" (i.e. everyone but leaders living in poverty and relying on government, like any other Communist-run country.) Mr. Biden will not likely be in the White House for long, as he is unwell. His VP, who is so radical she could not win enough votes to run as President, will be there. Communist Chinese leaders cheer her on.

chrisinnorfolk Sat 12-Dec-20 20:16:23

Pilgrim, Trump loves his people so much that he let Covid run riot through the country without taking action, and thousands have died and are continuing to do so. He is self interest personified.

MayBee70 Sat 12-Dec-20 21:41:06

Wonder what Pilgrim thinks about all of the executions that are taking place in America because of Trump. However I think I can assume that Pilgrim supports the death penalty. Trump is an abomination of a human being.

Joesoap Sat 12-Dec-20 21:53:32

The US is on the band wagon they will be vaccinating any day now, according to Trump today, thenI am sure other countries will follow suit,I am hoping the country where I live will soon start to vaccinate before we all go under!

Shinamae Sat 12-Dec-20 22:30:11

Chrissyh and Phloembundle.............thank you ?

40,000+ people involved in trialling this vaccine, including many from the medical arena. More money, time and resource have been thrown at developing and trialling these vaccines, I’m all for it
