My little granddaughter had to have an examination of her stomach and, just beforehand, I found that she thought she had to swallow an actual camera. Thank goodness I was able to reassure her but why ever had the procedure not been clearly explained to a child too young to voice her worries?

We have had previous threads about colonoscopies before on GN and I have always felt, after reading them, that should it happen to me I wouldn't expect it to be the best bit of my life but I needn't dread it either.

I'm glad these things are talked about these days.

They certainly are happening here as DH had one last week. All completely clear and he said “it was a dodle”. Had a mild sedative and was fascinated watching it on the screen.

It is definitely happening in the UK as my mother-in-law had this procedure relatively recently.

The worst part is if you have to diet for 36 hours and take a preparation to clear out any ?.
The procedure is as described by others and the only other issue is when the nurse turns out to be the mother of your GD’s best friend, who you’ve met and chatted to when dropping children off at school!

It’s not as unpleasant as Bowel cancer. No scopes happening here at the moment due to Covid so you’re lucky MrFraggle. I feel so sorry for the huge backlog of people waiting for a diagnosis and treatment.

I had a colonoscopy a while back and I agree that it is a trouble free procedure and doesn't really require sedation. The gas that is introduced has to come out again afterwards - I'll leave you to imagine how that happens and what sort of experience that is! Let's just say that one euphemistic term for it is a homophone for the surname of the last US President...

I experienced very little pain so I was pleased I had decided not to take pain relief before it started. I felt a quick pain if that makes sense when it was inserted into my rear end. I agree, prepping before was much more traumatic for me. I was fascinated by lying there and watching the procedure on the screen.

Endoscopy more unpleasant in my opinion, I opted for mild sedative on subsequent occasions.

Missfoodlove, that is a bit cruel. Male or female, we all have to go through these medical procedures and it is a daunting prospect

I have had lots of colonoscopies and I would rather have that than the camera down the oesophagus.
They are very skilled at doing the procedure and quite quickly too, they pump in gas which sometimes gives you a windy pain, I have never had pain. All of my proceduress have been ended with an injection of anti-spasmodic.
The prep is more of a trial than the procedure.
