We’ve all heard that magic number of aiming for 8 hours sleep per night (we certainly wish!) But how much sleep do you ACTUALLY get a night?
And, more importantly, do you think you get enough? ? moon

Before having children, I made up sleep by having long weekend lie-ins. After children probably got 7 hours sleep, broken at times due to illnesses etc. 2 yrs after retiring sleep pattern changed, sleeping better, more fitfully, so now getting 8/9 hrs which is great

I seem to get around 6 deep sleeping hours (according to my FitBit - But always feel like I need more - but as my father always said - your body takes the sleep it needs - and he was a doctor for 40 years

Since I was given a Fitbit which measures my sleep I was surprised that I sleep for longer than I thought. It averages out over a week to just over 8 hours. Some nights are shorter time but this is always made up with extra sleep the next night. I'm very grateful for this.
Apparently it's due to gut health. I'm happy to keep with natural yoghurt every evening.

On the nights that I sleep right through, I usually get between 7 and 8 hours. However, I occasionally have restless nights when I don’t feel as though I have had much quality sleep.

My sleep pattern is very variable and on average I manage about 6/7 hours with a loo break at some point and sure I would benefit from more sleep. I also get the nights where I become wide awake for a couple of hours with my mind working overtime - I usually find it is the day after that it all catches up with me.

I'm a chronic insomniac, 4 hours is doing well, but average 2-3 most nights. I do get the rare insomniac weekend when your body decides it needs rest and you spend a couple of days either sleeping or napping, but these only happen every couple of years.

I have ptsd so the insomnia goes hand in hand with it. I'm more or less constantly tired and brain fogged.

Average about 8. On cold afternoons I often have a post lunch snooze, especially if I’m reading and it is quiet. But other days when the weather is good I’m active most of the day.

I probably get 7 to 8 hrs sleep a night, I don't worry about it and am perfectly happy lying awake in my warm bed. I do get really sleepy mid afternoon and sometimes have a little doze

I get about 7 hours of sleep and this suits me very well although I do have some scary dreams which I can never remember when I wake up! I must have a very active imagination as I have at least 2 different and very involved dreams each night.

I get about 5 to 6 hours sleep per night. Then I end up napping during the day.Not enough sleep really

hughese Thu 18-Mar-21 12:32:21

I seem to be sleeping more and more given the chance. I often get my 8 hours, but at the weekends I probably tot up another couple of hours.

Silvergran59 Thu 18-Mar-21 11:11:20

I sleep in the spare room, and get around 9 hours a night.

GagaJo Thu 18-Mar-21 11:01:10

About 6 or 7 on work nights. On days off, I can sleep for up to 9. But as others have said, that does involve interruptions. Shutting the window at 6am - ish when noise outside starts (flippin' birds). Loo visits. Sinus headaches waking me.

Livvie21 Thu 18-Mar-21 10:59:53

I normally go to bed between 11 and 1 and then get up between 7 and 9. I never have less than 7 hours sleep a night. I really like being asleep!!

montydoo Thu 18-Mar-21 10:55:11

I get around 5 - 7 hours a night dependant on how my arthritis is affecting me, I do have some strong pain killers which I take when I feel I won't get a wink, but take those sparingly.

DUDY Thu 18-Mar-21 10:46:56

I usually get about 6 hours sleep but that's entirely my fault as I stay up in bed reading until quite late!

Maggiemaybe Thu 18-Mar-21 10:30:45

I’d have had a much better sleep last night if a neighbour hadn’t needed to do a spot of hammering at 7.30. The funny thing was that he was obviously trying to do it quietly and slowly. Which meant it went on for longer. grin

I'm interested to read that, Lorraine379. Do you know what causes your shoulder to ache and wake you up?
I've just recently started having this and it's a darned nuisance.
Is it arthritis?

Lorraine379 Thu 18-Mar-21 10:10:03

Not enough, as I have a shoulder that aches and wakes me up. So I would say 5/6 hours.

Kate54 Thu 18-Mar-21 07:12:54

Haven’t slept through the night since a serious illness 15 years ago. Getting to sleep is not usually a problem (reading non-fiction rather than a gripping novel is the key to that plus mega strength valerian if anything to worry about coming up the next day) , it’s the waking up every few hours that’s the main annoyance. If there’s nothing on the next day, can easily then sleep until 9! Average hours? Anywhere between five and eight but broken, so broken.

clairewoods137 Wed 17-Mar-21 20:13:42

7 1/2hours, Usually go to bed at 10.30pm and wake up at 6am.

bobble5366 Wed 17-Mar-21 17:38:36

I go to bed at 10, wake around 12, drop off again, then wake about 3, then if I cannot get back off to sleep because the OH is snoring - I will sleep on the couch downstairs until 7 am - I would love love a through night - like I used to have as a child.

Jewils48 Wed 17-Mar-21 17:32:56

I get about 7 hours sleep night. I often do have a nap about 5 for 30 minutes and that perks me up until 11.30pm

Manx33S Wed 17-Mar-21 17:17:29

I'm lucky if I get between 6 to 8 hours sleep. If I go to bed before 11pm I lay wide awake for 2 to 3 hours then I end up getting up in the morning after about 9.am. I have tried having different drinks (but not too late) to help me sleep - but alas, no success.

Leah50 Wed 17-Mar-21 16:11:47

4 - 5 hours which is enough for me as I've had the same sleep pattern for many years. 2-3 hours after getting to sleep easily, then awake in the early hours when I read or potter around. Usually get back to sleep for an hour or two before waking up for good.
