I don't remember my parents reading to me but I always did it with my son and my grandsons. My two grandsons were obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine and I think I know those books off by heart.

My Dad made up all the stories he told us as children and they were wonderful. They were usually about animals. I so wish I’d written them down as I can’t remember them all now.

My dad was chief story teller in our house. He rarely read from books and preferred to make up his own. He did the same for my children when they were young. They were mesmerised by his stories.

I can't remember ever being read to as a child. My dad's eyes were really bad (catteracts) so he had a reason. My mother just didn't I was an avid reader from the moment I joined the library though.

My Dad was a regular soldier in the army all my life until I was 10. I only saw him periodically, when he came home on leave, as we had stayed in the family home in Yorkshire, so as not to disrupt the education of my older siblings.

He used to read to me when he was home, from Kipling's Just so Stories and my favourite one was How the Elephant got his Trunk. I loved the rhythm of the "great grey-green greasy Limpopo river" especially and we always used to say those words together.

Mother made them up and then always followed by a prayer.

I remember a Noddy story. Something about a thief and PC Plod was looking at biscuit crumbs for clues.

Our Dad hardly ever did anything for us at bedtime, but very occasionally he would sit by our bed, I shared with my sister, and tell us the story of “The old iron pot”.
This was about the time he was an army chef in Burma, in WW2, and how he cooked on an open fire in the camp, and how everyone enjoyed his cooking.

Definitely AA Milne, I can still recite all the words to Disobedience (James James Morrison Morrison) now, 60 years later. I also loved The Borrowers when I was a bit older.

My favourite bedtime memory is of my mother reciting poetry from memory. The Lady of Shalott comes to mind. Pure contentment.

We’ve been talking a lot about sleep (or the lack thereof!) this week, but we wanted today to take a trip down memory lane and have a good dose of nostalgia so… what was your favourite bedtime story as a child? If you have grandchildren, is it something you’ve been able to share with them too?

By posting on this thread you could win one of the fabulous spot prizes we have on offer this week - please see our Sleep Week page here for details of the prizes and for the T&Cs. Don’t forget - we’ll be picking 5 winners at random from threads across the week, so the more threads you post on, the more chance you have of winning!
