I still have my Billy, knitted for me by my Mum when I was 2 years old. He is a very floppy rabbit with a pompom tail and blue eyes. For many years I couldn't sleep without him. He was and is very much loved xx

Yes I had one called Panda - for obvious reasons, one called Leggy - for obvious reasons and one called Mousey- for obvious reasons ? I’d make sure they were all tucked up in bed beside me and I’d even squeeze myself against the wall beside my bed to make sure they were all equally comfy and warm ? ? ?

It's nice to read that a lot of us didn't have teddy's or cuddly toys. My DGC don't believe me when I say I did have a teddy - called Teddy - but I dropped him as I was climbing the stairs on the bus and he fell out. My DM rang the bell to try to stop the bus but the conductor overruled her. We never found him and he was never replaced. I suppose I was about four years old.

I had a bear called Benji and my favourite doll was Connie.

TrendyNannie6 Sat 20-Mar-21 17:24:33

Yes, I can remember all my dolls names but the two teddy’s I took to bed one each side of me, one was a rabbit called Bunny and the other a teddy called bimbo

I had a wartime teddy. Because of the shortages he only had fur on his head, hands and feet, the rest of his body was a sort of brown tweed fabric and he was filled with sawdust. For some reason I called him Paul Green John Thomas Rosser! I presume I didn't give him his whole name every time I played with him, but that was certainly his name. Like others, my favourite toys disappeared after an illness, and I do wish I still had my teddy.

Teddy bear called Freddie Ted!

Polly4t42 Sat 20-Mar-21 17:05:13

My teddies are Mary and Jane, they are 66 yrs old the same as me, they are a little threadbare, dressed in knitted clothes and sit with my brothers ted in my dining room on top of my Mother’s old singer sewing machine case. Mary is an ordinary straw filled teddy and Jane is a smaller white one my uncle and godfather got me for my christening he was based on a polar bear born at London Zoo around that time.

My favourite toy was called Charlie; a small ventriloquist's
dummy. I spent a lot of time stuffing jelly and custard into his open mouth. He is now far too worn out to be of any antique value but I still love him. As I grew older I fantisised being
able throw my voice and making the roast chicken speak just
as my father carved into it.

No such thing when I was a child - I was lucky to have a bed!!

My favourite toy was a Teddy bear called Teddy. I used to carry him everywhere with me under my arm. At night time I used to tell him about all my problems. I still have him. He used to have pink fur and squeak. He was at one time stuffed with straw. His arms & legs have had to be sewn back on. He wears a jumper & trousers that I knitted for him as a child.

Goodbyetoallthat

My knitted cat was called "silly old puss". He was replaced with a cleaner version & things were never the same again.

Reminds me of when my beloved toy dog Pongo finally fell to bits, leaking straw all over the place. I was given a brand new Pongo, identical, but....somehow not the same. I never really loved new Pongo.

I didn’t have one but I do have my eldest son’s one. We have been estranged for almost 19 years and he’s now 42. My husband bought it for him the day he was born and he took it everywhere with him until he moved out at 21 ish. He gave him back to me to look after. His name is TB (for teddy bear!) and I keep him in my bedside drawer unit. I take him out for a cuddle now and then to think back to when times weren’t so sad.

A bear called Ted, he said Mama, until my mum washed him and after that he just said aargh. I can remember him pegged on the washing line by an ear, blowing in the breeze

TillyWhiz Sat 20-Mar-21 15:34:26

Mine was a black Scottie dog called Blackie. And strangely, discussing this with my American friend recently she had one too, named Chester.

My teddy, given to me by my aunt when I was born, had no name until I started to learn French. Then he was named Bernard, pronounced the French way-'Bear-nard'. I still have him up in the loft, dressed in a gingham shirt and tweed trousers I made for him by following instructions on Blue Peter.

I had a straw filled teddy called Bobby who had a growl and movable arms and legs. He had the loveliest face, with a beautiful smile. I loved him so much and would make swings for him on the clothes line.

I cut his fur once but it didn't grow back. My sister was given him when I was 11. When I searched for him a bit later on my mother had thrown him out. I was quite upset...but I have photos of us together and I'm about 4-5 yrs.

I had a hard doll called Rosebud. I didn't like her much as her eyes were supposed to shut when she was laid down but one eye stayed open and it annoyed me.

Blue Ted and big Ted plus a huge rag doll my mother made me from some old curtains whose name was Belinda

grandmaz Sat 20-Mar-21 14:39:55

I had/have several...Teddy, Kitty and Florence. Teddy is much older than I am as he was waiting for me to make an appearance in 1952, courtesy of my lovely maternal grandmother. He’s had new paw and foot pads and his eyes and nose were replaced by a friends mother when her little darling ripped them out! Kitty was bought by my father, after a spectacular tantrum by yours truly in a toy shop resulted in our cutting short our shopping trip...my father returned about a week later with Kitty, who has since been loved half to death and is missing an eye as well as her ear button! Florence the dog used to be my godmothers nightdress case however one rainy day she decided to transform Florence into a cuddly for me and we stuffed her full of laddered stockings then my godmother sewed her up and she has been with me since ...that was 63 years ago. Having arranged them just now for their ‘insta’ pic I’ve discovered that Florence is leaking something that looks like minuscule wood shavings so urgent repairs are needed! Each toy reminds of someone dearly loved so I’ve never been tempted to dispose of them. They are part of my childhood.
