Grunt.....he was my Teddy.Had him when l was really little and treasured him . He came everywhere with me except school. My mum gave him away without me knowing when l was 17. I don't really know why as he was almost bald and his grunt was fading .l was so hurt but she couldn't see why.

My straw-filled teddy was called Timothy. He squeaked if you pressed his chest. At least he did until my brother overdid the chest thumping of Timothy and whatever caused the squeak gave up.

Being a firmly filled bear, Timothy could stand up with a bit of careful balancing.

I had a woolly lamb called Lewis. I don't really remember it but it's there in photographs of me as a baby. My teddy has never had a name and is now an octogenarian and very bare bear. I gave it to my baby sister when she was born, but as someone gave her a teddy of her own, I soon got mine back.

I didn’t have one. Nor did any of my siblings. When I was 13 I spent my pocket money at a school fete on a handmade pale blue teddy called unimaginatively Blue Pooh. He went half round the world with me when I grew up and my daughter still has him on her bed.

My teddy was called Ted. A blue and yellow chap that got balder over the years. Mum used to wash him, now and then, and hang him on the drying line by his ears confused Now I've renamed Ted "Patches" because I've had to use patches of material on him to cover holes where the material is worn. I need to find a toy hospital I think! Ted/Patches continues to be my most faithful friend.blushsmilethanks

I had a teddy called 'Old Ted' after a new one arrived from my dad who sent it from Korea where he was 'at war'. I remember throwing the new teddy on the floor and screaming that I wanted to keep Old Ted even though the new one played a tune. (Frequent drafts meant luggage was kept to a minimum....) I think the interloper was quietly disposed of.... Old Ted wears clothes now as all his fur has been cuddled off. Occasionally he comes downstairs from the loft to recline in his personal deckchair.

I 'inherited' a navy blue oiled wool knitted dog with one ear, his button eyes hanging on by a thread and his legs all in a line on his body .....I imaginatively called him 'DOGGY' and likewise, a blue almost bare of any fur, bunny rabbit ...which I called BUNNY ... ha ha ...they were the only cuddly toys I had but as I never knew any other toys I loved them to bits ......many years later (I think I was probably 30) I said laughingly to my dad ;I never had a teddy bear;......at Christmas, what did I get ? a huge teddy bear ........some 4o plus years later it still sits on a chair in my lounge, having travelled half way round Europe and the UK in the many different places I lived ! My daughter had many toys, but her favourite was a yellow ragged teddy bear she bough HERSELF from the Guides jumble sale ...and called ...wait for it ...Yellow Ted. She took it to Uni with her and wherever she moved Yellow Ted went as well ...........

My childhood cuddly toys were just Teddy and monkey. My first doll was called Susum, apparently I couldn't be corrected. As I grew older she became Susan, and she was joined by Christine.

I had a bear called Brenda from when I was a baby, she only had one arm (I can't remember how she lost it). When I was about 10 I thought the family across the road were poorer than me (I am not sure they were as we were pretty poor) but I gave Brenda to them. I regretted it immediately. Then my cousin gave me a bear called Bob to replace her, I still have Bob, he is very threadbare but sits in my bedroom still and he must now be about 70 years old. (The attached picture is our family our collecting bluebells, I am in the middle with Brenda).

I had a peculiar creature hand-knitted by the kind lady down the road. I called him Kangabun and he was very well loved. Still got him -wrapped in a big soft old hankie in the drawer.

Not a toy, but a square wooden scarf called NiNi. Mom had a new one off a SIL every Christmas, so I would have the old one as my cuddly, and of course it smelled of her, wonderful.

polnan Sat 20-Mar-21 12:57:23

never had one

Teddy

I had a big teddy bear during the war which my father had found in the street. I played with it every day but not nicely. I liked to hurl it into the air and did this relentlessly until its eyes fell out. Then one day it vanished. Apparently the bear's real owner had been found and my dad gave it back. I don't remember being given a replacement but as it was wartime maybe toys were hard to come by.
When my daughter was little we gave her a baby doll which she used to push in her doll's pram when we went to the shops. One day a shop assistant asked her what the doll's name was. My daughter said "Baby Jesus." The assistant gave us a funny look.

My only soft toy was a teddy bear called Bertie, I don't know who chose his name, not me.
I loved him though.
Was there a Royal called Bertie?

King George V1 was known as Bertie.

Froglady Sat 20-Mar-21 12:39:12

Somebody in my family knitted a soft toy for us 3 children and if was christened Teddy Tail as it had a wonderful tail. He lasted for years and I now find myself wondering what happened to him. One of my 2 sisters hated soft toys but I didn't find that out.until just a few years ago.

Sheba after the queen of. She was a rubber doll stuffed with kapok and a sort of plastic head. Her fingers and hands and then her feet and legs all gradually perished and fell off. I told everybody she had leprosy not that I knew what that was, but did have a strong Methodist upbringing.

HannahLoisLuke Sat 20-Mar-21 12:28:55

I had a female golly made by my mum who was dressed like the maid in Gone With the Wind. Wish I still had her though she’d be frowned on now.
There were teddies around but don’t remember any being mine. Think I had a panda.

Tabbycat Sat 20-Mar-21 12:27:06

I did have a teddy when I was a very little girl and after I'd recovered from some childhood disease - my mother can't remember what it was - the doctor told her to burn him, so she did! shock
When I was in my twenties I went out with a man who when he heard this story took me to a teddy bear shop in London and bought me a beautiful Merrythought bear. The bear is called Digby and is with me still. I married the man and we have just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversay!

Fairyfeet Sat 20-Mar-21 12:07:37

I had a very hard, solid teddy, imaginatively called Ted. He became very threadbare, but I loved him. He was handed on to my son when he was small, who decided one day, that he needed a bath. That was fine, but drying him by sitting him on the fire guard (we had an open fire) was not very successful. He ended up very singed before I noticed what was happening. Poor Ted was never the same, and ended up in the bin when we moved house.
I do still have a few other teddies from my childhood, and I’m 72. You have made me feel quite nostalgic, so I’ll be finding them in the attic later. I wonder if my grandchildren would like to play with them??
