Oddly, I loved my dolls, but they didn't have names

JaneJudge Sat 20-Mar-21 11:32:18

I also had a little Ted but I also had a Bruno grin

oh yes, - mine was (and is) Teddy too. I still have him. He had several surgeries carried out by my granny to be stuffed with old nylons. Granny made him several outfits which I still have too. They are all apron style out of different left over fabrics but my favourite was always a green bit of satin with a colourful border stitched on.

I too had a golliwog. His name was Billy. I talked to him as if he was another child. One day as my mother was coming downstairs she heard me say, "I think that's enough now, don't you Billy?" When she came into the kitchen she saw that I had rubbed nearly half a pound of butter in my hair! It took weeks to get it out completely!

Teddy Ursula and her sister, Sally.

They are here in honourable retirement.

Like some others I don’t remember having a soft toy at all. However, I had a hard dolly called Ann who I loved fiercely! How few toys we had back then, compared with today. I wonder what we did all day. confused

Mine was called Panda for obvious reasons. He had a wooden nose which I chewed. I still have him, in a very sorry state now.

Teddy Growler. He’s now lost his growl.
The small one eyed, one eared bear on the right belonged to my husband. A home made war time bear, Ted was got at by the family dog when he was very young.

My teddy was called Patricia. Not sure why. Made it awkward when I had a difficult SiL of the same name. ?Apparently I hankered after a teddy for my fifth birthday and it was very hard to find one in July. Toys tended to be around for Christmas mainly. No growl left and fur a bit balding, but not bad for 66. ?

Irish ...it is a big ( for a little girl) honey coloured bear given to me frim an Irish relative when I was born. I remember crying into its shoulder when his head was bigger than mine ... still treasured sixty years later.

I had a yellow bear and he was just called Teddy. I think he lives on top of my mums wardrobe now and is adorned with single earrings ( where the other is lost) and glitzy bracelets

cookiemonster66 Sat 20-Mar-21 10:56:52

mine was a handmade dolly with a long skirt, made from material by my aunt called JUDY, when you turned her upside down, there was another dolly with a long skirt, so two dolls in one, very clever!

I never had one, my sister had a panda called sooty but I wasn’t a cuddly toy lover.

Cuckooz Sat 20-Mar-21 10:54:13

I had a panda which went everywhere with me and he’s still in the attic. Loved him dearly. He was always ‘panda’ obviously I wasn’t very inventive in the naming stakes!

My delightful little 1950s teddy was called 'Buttons'. The name caught my imagination after seeing Cinderella performed at the nursery. And I still have her - it's a she because I dressed her in my doll's clothes.

Sarandy Sat 20-Mar-21 10:16:08

I had a dolly called bobo because she got a “bobo’ and had to be fixed.

lillyofthevalley Sat 20-Mar-21 09:52:16

I had bumble bear - because he had a yellow and black jumper when he came on Christmas Day. smile

JessK Sat 20-Mar-21 09:27:03

Ted, not a very creative name but I loved him dearly.

downtoearth Sat 20-Mar-21 09:01:40

My godmother made me a rag doll out of old fur coat she was fluffykins.
I also had a big pink teddy, taller than I was called pinky.
Also slept by my bed a push a long dog, like a baby walker, an Airedale terrier I called chummy.

Holidayenthusiast Sat 20-Mar-21 08:57:00

I had a teddy bear called Teddy. He is sitting on the chest of drawers in my bedroom. He looks a little shabby now and his squeaker no longer squeaks but I could never get rid of him.

Froglady Sat 20-Mar-21 08:51:44

I have a teddy bear that I was given when very young; he was dressed, as far as I can recall, in shirt with a bow tie and trousers. Can't remember any more clothes. I called him Timothy/Timmy after a boy across the road. When I was a bit religious the name got changed to Bartholomew but it eventually went back to Timmy.
He's lost his eyes and is sown up in various colours. I also cut his fur as I thought it would grow back as my hair did after it was cut! So he's quite battered but very loved.

I still have my lovely doll named Carol. She’s 60 years old now. I was 6 when I got her. She lived on in my parents house when I left home and eventually moved back in with me.

Her lips have faded to white, she has developed cataracts and she needs to wear a hat as her hair is starting to shed but other than that she’s as good as new. My lips are normal colour but I can empathise with her other problems!
