There was a thread about hysterectomy a couple of days ago which discusses this.
I had a hysterectomy and bladder and bowel repair for prolapse. You can have a pessary but my GP recommended surgery in preference to possibly having to have a pessary changed in your 80s.
I recommend the hysterectomy if your prolapse is severe as mine was.
Pelvic floor exercises help and I still need to do them post surgery.

You will need to be more specific. Are you talking about vaginal prolapse or rectal prolapse?
Have you had any major surgery such as a hysterectomy?

I have only had a prelim examination at drs and hospital. A ring or maybe hysterectomy was suggested. I am waiting to see another consultant. I am 75 and don't feel like having a ring pessary if it means I will still need surgery in later years. I have uterine prolapse and atrophy of the front vaginal wall. I'm not sure what to do. Just wondered if anyone else had had this happen and what treatment or repair they had. I'm not sure what a ring does or if it can repair a damaged wall etc. Would be pleased if anyone can help from experience thank you

I have had a ring for about 8 years but for the last 3 changes it has slipped out of position so I think it is only a temporary solution, it certainly isn't a cure. When I can get an appointment with my GP I will ask to see a consultant to talk about possible surgery. I wish I had pushed for surgery earlier but I am not very assertive. I am 77 by the way.

I would go for a hysterectomy if I had your problems OP.

I know this is of no use to you now but for those of you with daughters please let them know that if they go on to HRT around menopause these problems are far less likely to happen. It is lack of oestrogen which results in atrophy, prolapse, etc.

I have had a ring pessary for just over a year (I'm 62) and so far it has worked brilliantly. The doctor wasn't keen, and was going to put me forward for a hysterectomy, but I wanted to try the ring first. If it becomes less efficient I will review my options. Maybe if I was 10 years older I would opt for the operation. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had long term success with pessaries.

I had a vaginal prolapse operated on about 18 years ago. The recovery time was the same as for a hysterectomy. It certainly helped considerably.

My mother had surgery for this many years ago. She referred to it as "a stitch" so presumably the uterus was "stitched " higher up. She was probably 60-65 when this was done and though recovery took 2 months (if I remember correctly) she had no further problems in this area.
