Best type of knickers post op hip replacement

Thanks everyone for your replies. I’ve had my pre-op assessment, just waiting for the date with great trepidation. I think I’ll go with the inside out option - good idea. I was thinking a dress would be the easiest to wear, I’ve got loose linen ones if it’s still warm enough. Thanks Katek, the Drench wipes sound very useful.

Had my hip replacement last year. I was given NHS knickers to wear.
I was warned they may not be on once the op was completed and sure enough once on the ward I realised I was knickerless!!??

I would agree with the dresses Aveline-much easier and more comfortable to wear than trousers. I just used my loose summer sundresses with either a t shirt underneath or a cardigan on top. Re pants, I found my usual midi seamfree were fine as they sat above the scar. One thing I found extremely useful were Drench wipes, they’re larger than normal and can be warmed in the microwave. Very useful if you find showering a bit difficult in the early days. They used them in hospital for bed bath (bed wipe down?!) but I got mine from Amazon. There’s also a no water shampoo cap but I can’t remember name - again very useful in first few days. Good luck with the surgery.

I have asked the pre op nurse but it was a Covid safe telephone interview and I needed to be shown exactly where the scar would be rather that vaguely having it described. I can't get a picture in my mind of what it will be like. I'll know soon enough. I've bought some large dresses which should cover a multitude of sins

All your queries should be answered by your pre op Nurse, I used to be one. Just make a list of all your queries, as it is very easy to forget what you need to ask. Hope all goes well for you.

When I had my sigmoid colectomy in was advised to buy waist high knickers a size bigger than usual. I didn’t wear any knickers in hospital, I had a catheter for a couple of days anyway. It was keyhole surgery, no stitches or dressings. 3 tiny incisions and 1 a couple of inches long.

I'm wondering where exactly the scar will be. I'm having a robotically assisted op so will have three little probe entry points plus, presumably, a larger one but not sure exactly where. There seem to be so many potential 'approaches'- anterior, posterior, antero lateral etc etc. Will just have to wait and see I suppose. I have pants of all sizes and shapes all ready!

I was advised to wear knickers inside out. Just wore full size all cotton ones from M&S. Good luck with it all. It’s well worth it.

I had a hip replacement and had no problem with my usual knickers. The scar isn’t anywhere near my knickers!
But be warned - when I changed planes in Oman last year they demanded to see the scar!

My friend bout 5 packs of Primark knicks without seams in a size bigger came in packs of 3 I think they where not expensive at all and she through them away when she was comfortable enough to use her normal ones.

I'm four weeks since 2nd hip replacement. First one was in February. Since then I have continued to wear my normal chain store small knickers, but inside out so the seams don't rub on my scars. Though for the first week after each op I swanned around at home in a
calf length hoodie with no knickers!

I wear midi style M+S and carried on with these straight after my op. Dressing wasn't affected and neither was the scar after the dressing was removed. I had dissolvable stitches.

Good luck and as lullydully said, the exercises are really important.

I didn't use special knickers because I had quite large dressing over the wound. Size of knickers are not as important as the exercises.

I can't remember having any problems or having to buy any special kind of post-op knickers. Since you ask, though, I recommend high leg ones which should come well above the upper limit of the wound.

I agree with others, that no pants or ones with no VPL are best. When I had mine done I did have a big dressing on it for a while, so there is some protection.

I found some the ones with no visible panti line good as they are loose and have no elastic in the legs. I agree no pants was better, I wore loose pj bottoms or shorts when I first came home.

Or very big ones that come up to your waist.

Go without if you can.
