MSG does this to me. I have to read labels for anything savoury, also keep checking as it sneaks into stuff that didn't have it before. It gives me headaches and a hungover feeling too.

greenlady Years ago I went to a popular Chinese restaurant, the food was lovely but the next morning I had a terrible headache which just got worse and lasted for 10 days. It could have been a coincidence but I did wonder if it was MSG.

Urmstongran There may be something in that. My weight is within my BMI, but I am quite a light build so I really ought to weigh at least a stone less than I do.

My problem is an aching hip at night, no problems during the day, the joint is still fully flexible and pain free, but get into bed and it doesn't seem to matter what side I lie, my hip aches enough to keep me awake.

It started about 25 years ago, slight and intermittent and has gradually got worse. Any others with this problem?

Snap Monica! These last few weeks I have endured the same. Mind you, if I could shift a few lbs I think my joints could cope better ...

What about Indian Tonic Water ? That’s good for cramps?

I take Bit B3 when a period of pain starts in my legs, especially the feet and it works. Dr said when I mentioned it that it a my body lacking B3

I’ve been taking B12 recently. I get confused with all the B vitamins.

I have always suffered ankle pain - I was finally diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos syndrome in my mid 50s.

I tend to drink decaf tea and coffee but boy do I know it if I have a cup of normal coffee in the evening. I’m awake half the night!

This makes a lot of sense. The MSG could well have been what kept me “wired” and stopped me sleeping too. And if the salt content of the “crisps” had caused dehydration, that could explain the dizziness- low blood pressure.
A full pint of water before bed, no alcohol and 4 magnesium tablets ensured a much better night last night.

Nowhere near as bad but I’ve been having pain in my shin bones at night for a while now. Could understand having pain in the leg where I have an arthritic knee but sometimes have shin pain in the other leg. And ankle pain. Never had pain in my shins before. It’s why I was asking about compression stockings the other day as I thought it might be a circulation problem. I take a magnesium tablet most days.

pain in the "good" leg is a known phenomenon caused by favouring the bad leg.

My husband suffers badly from leg cramps at night. He used the usual remedies, drinking more water and magnesium tablets, without making any difference. The game changer for him has been doing leg stretching exercises before bed. He read about these on the NHS site and found a video on You Tube. They take very little time and might be worth a try.

I read your OP, MawBe and thought 'snap'.

Sometimes leg cramps in the calf bother me at night, especially if I've had a glass of red wine but twice this week I've had cramps in my ankles and feet at night and again when I was sitting in the garden this afternoon. One foot has been painful all day (I do have problem feet but this is different).

I haven't had a drink since Sunday evening when I had one glass of red wine. However, I did eat chicken with a spicy chilli coating last night and do wonder if it could be a reaction to certain foods.

I hope you get a good night's sleep and feel better tomorrow.
Off to take some magnesium tablets!

I seem to recall GrandmaFrench reporting similar ankle pain on Soops thread a few months ago Maw. She said the pain was sudden and excruciating. She was in absolute agony. I can’t remember what it was though, sorry!

Leg cramps, I get that regularly. But ankle pain, no. Hope you sleep better tonight Mawbe. Have you called the surgery for advice ? Let us know how you are …..

I had a dreadfu night- couldn’t sleep, tossing and turning, sweating (checked my temperature twice) and recurring leg cramps. I know the latter are connected with dehydration and alcohol consumption, but other than 2 glasses of white at lunch, I had drunk nothing out of the ordinary.
I woke up at one point from this restless sleep with agonising ankle pains- as if I had dislocated it,+ could not weight bear at all. And cramps up the front of my shin (shin splints?) I felt if I could just manipulate my ankle it would click back and then I could walk about to ease the cramps. I couldn’t, it didn’t. However I also felt so dizzy with the pain, I couldn’t stand. I swallowed a handful of magnesium tablets and downed a pint glass of water and hobbled back to bed, holding on to everything on the way! Magnesium usually fixes leg cramps.
The only connection I could make with what I had eaten or drunk was that instead of supper (well it had been a “good” lunch) I finished off a bowl of savoury nibbles. So was it the salt/sodium in the nibbles that had triggered the dehydration? Or some noxious e-numbers? ? They were a sort of spicy, chilli corn-based crisp snack.
I felt dizzy most of the morning and have felt “fragile” all day.
All on account of a bowl of nibbles?
Any offers? ?‍⚕️ ?‍⚕️
