Kefir is good as is sauerkraut. They both help the gut bacteria.
I don’t have experience with diverticulitis so can’t really offer any more advice. Hope you feel better soon.

Interesting. I think I shall try to avoid ibuprofen as much as possible.
I don’t take any other meds.
I really must try to drink more water , I don’t mind drinking it at all but just forget ! I need a sure fire way of remembering !

The good thing it Lucca that there's no inflammation.

Diverticulosis is the condition that occurs when small pouches, or sacs, form and push outward through weak spots in the wall of your colon. In diverticulitis, one or a few of the pouches in the wall of your colon become inflamed.

Experts are not sure what causes these conditions and it's the same for irritable bowel syndrome.

If you take medications for other conditions, it's worth considering whether they may be contributing to diarrhea. For example, there's a separate new thread about natural salicylates in foods. Salycylic acid is another name for aspirin. Other anti-inflammatory meds such as ibuprofen can irritate the gut.

I have right sided diverticulosis, good advice about joining the support group. I was also told the information about seeds and pips us outdated.
I sometimes eat badly, for example rushed lunches at work, comfort foods and eating it too quickly, this causes me sometimes to flare up. I am trying to ensure I dont rush my food, and that I eat more healthily.
Stress and anxiety also bring it on, so I am trying not to get too anxious about things.
Just be sensible about your eating, and as advised by my consultant, drink plenty of water.
Glad it was nothing sinister.

I was diagnosed with this some 12 years ago when after my brother died of bowel cancer I had a colonoscopy and that’s when it was discovered. I don’t do anything different, I eat what I want and I’m afraid my diet isn’t brilliant but touchwood I get no problems with it. I do take a probiotic shot every day

Thanks, sounds a good idea re the Facebook group
The nhs leaflet also discounts probiotics but….I’m going to try having a kefir and fruit smoothie every day for a while.

I have diverticulosis. It was discovered on a ct scan for something else. I just eat anything and have had no flare-ups. I think you have to be more careful if you develop diverticulitis when it becomes inflamed.

Lucca, the avoiding seeds/nuts thing used to be the standard advice for those of us with diverticular disease, but is now generally reckoned to be outdated. Unfortunately, with DD, there is no "one rule for all" as it affects everyone differently. It really is a case of trial and error to see which foods affect you personally. The best advice currently given is to start off with a relatively low fibre diet then gradually introduce more fibre. Probiotics are a good idea - kefir is good, but I personally take Symprove, which is expensive, but is one of the few probiotics proven to reach the gut intact. If you are on Facebook, join the Diverticular Disease and Diverticulitis UK Based Support Group - you will get lots of helpful advice and support from people who have both DD and IBS on there.

Yes I had heard this about seeds etc but the NHS leaflet says this is a myth !

My mother had it. She was advised to avoid pips and seeds. So no buns with seeds, no strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes she could eat if she took seeds out. But also things with skins like beans and peas had to be avoided.

No need to be sorry ! Apparently the result of “wear and tear” from being 71…..
TBH. I was fearing far worse

Sorry to hear this Lucca.
My only experience of IBS was as a reaction to a variety of antidepressants. It just meant that I never knew when I needed to go to the loo; no routine, very little warning.
It was a nightmare at work. Fortunately it was easily rectified.
Hope that you get some good replies

I’ve had investigations (sigmoidoscopy etc) as I’ve had pain in mostly in my right side and diarrhoea etc. Nothing sinister found except a polyp plus a bit of diverticulosis. I was given a leaflet but diet wise it just suggests the usual healthy stuff. Has anyone got any experience of this and/or advice ? Is Kefir a good idea for example ? What would IBS. Feel like ?
